We both, and now Matthew as well, like to read very much and sometimes even the same books ;-)
For space and weight Jane brought her Kindle, and me some books, while more were taken back by both my sisters while visiting. On the recommended page you can see which bookshops I visited.
Textbook at Junction is generally the cheapest, but Bookstop at Yaya exchanges read books and let you choose new ones!

About the economics & coffee : A Good African Story > Andrew Rugasira
In my opinion the writer takes a lot of time to 'explain' background and is quite opinionated, he also chooses mostly for quotes that support his way of thinking. But the Message Trade not Aid is clear and a good one!
About Wine in Africa : Africa Uncorked > Erica & John Platter
Great writers, both well known in and with Africa and from their wine books about South-Africa.
About economics: Dead Aid > Dambisa Moyo -- Jeffrey Sachs > The End of Poverty
Of course there are more but these 2 for me kind of shape the debate about Developmental Economics.
Very short Moyo says, any aid to governments is bad and should be stopped.
Sachs says, any aid is good and should be kept up till a country is out of poverty.
About running in Kenya : Running with the Kenyans > Adharanand Finn
It is in an interesting book if you know a bit about Kenya and are interested in running. A lot of background is not explained and the book could have done with some illustrations or even a map.
Polital Satire in cartoons by GADO. As seen in quite some blog posts and on Facebook.

See the world through my eyes..., Kieran - De wereld door mijn ogen, ....Kieran
Hello All, **** BlogPost Number 100 ****
-here Kieran, Because it really is all about me!

Anyway, that is my Dad playing around, since He and My Mom are very happy!
The big man in court ( the boss Matthew says) has given 'judgement' and 'granted adoption',
Which all means that everybody is happy. I get my own book with a picture of me (passport) and we will all go with a big plane to Nederland.
After my big brother I had of course something to say too! Because really, although we may 'fight' occasionally like brothers do, I really want to do everything he does!! (Except for putting my fingers in my mouth, mummy just says)
So here it goes, my dad will try and tell you some new things that have been going on the last couple of months, not easy because there is something new for me nearly every day! And the last time I was allowed to 'speak freely' was in November 2012.
I am very curious and generally enthusiastic about things. Sometimes I will take my time to get used to a new thing or new people, but I always try it in the end!
Nowadays I am also into fashion advice:
I told mama to wear a dress!
I tell her she looks like a princess sometimes too.
I will inform my parents what is going on with my brother; (all the time)
-"Matthew's got crying knees", when Matthew was crying because he hurt his knee
-"When Matthew was sleeping his tummy was dirty" (no need to explain that one ;-)
- 'doe normaal' (act normal, behave yourself! Who did he copy that off ;-)
- "don't mess me around, Matthew", being bossy
I've got sleep in the eyes = I had a dream
My eyes are tickling me, after swimming.
Also, in the bath, "is there kennicalls in here too ?"
Papa's put big fire on - papa is lighting candles
I like meisjes on bread, for breakfast = gestampte muisjes (breakfast aniseed powder, typical to NL, but translates in Kieran's language to 'I like girls on my bread'!)
Nosebeard = a moustache
Cube shape = cube
Big circle shape in the sky = the moon
Finger muppet = his finger puppet
You've got hair by your chin, he does not like it when papa has a beard
"Kijk mummy, ik maak een truc!" (I'm doing a trick)
I'm talking Nederland = I'm speaking Dutch (in a combination of languages)
Likes
IPad: to watch You Tube films, now Pink Panther, Pingu and Peppa Pig (with help from Matt)
Look at pictures, any really. But also in the photo books he has, 1 about our house and the people in The Netherlands and the other with people in Kenya.
Now he does watch films: Shrek, Madagascar and het loves the Tinga inga tales DVD he had for Christmas.
Kieran has also got a new nickname in the family "Kleine {small} Dik Dik", this started during our trip to the Maasai Mara, he eats nearly everything, sometimes very slowly and messily and is growing very quickly!

Yes! We have had the Judgement 'delivered' * yesterday and the words "adoption granted" have been spoken with our lawyer as a witness. * To us in a SMS-text from our lawyer Mr. Ogutu.
He has been working on the judge's clerk (following up with him) every day since the 12th of March when the judgement was was scheduled...
Now we have to wait for the official adoption order, which will come in a week, and the certificate which will follow after. Some more papers and then legalisations, a Kenyan passport with visa and stamps in it...

With Kieran all is well, he had his first 'playdate' together with Matthew and played with Benjamin (and Owen) at their house. (A very nice family who we will also leave behind here...)
His English is getting good, full sentences with the right word order!
The English teacher at school says he is very chatty and likes to laugh.Where the Dutch teacher says he is quiet and follows everything with a big smile. His Dutch is fine too, but since it is really his 3rd language, it will take some time...

Anyway, this our 100th blog post already!
We hope that everybody enjoys our writings and will keep following us for a couple of more weeks ?
We are very happy and grateful and hope to share some more of our adoption journey when preparing to go home to the Netherlands with Kieran. Let us know if there are any questions, comments our requests for subjects!

Goed, dat is mijn vader die aan het spelen is, omdat hij en mijn moeder erg blij zijn!
De grote man in de rechtbank (de baas zegt Matthew) heeft de ' uitspraak' gedaan en de 'adoptie toegestaan', wat betekend dat iedereen blij is. Ik krijg mijn eigen boek met een foto van mij (paspoort) en we gaan met zijn allen in een groot vliegtuig naar Nederland.
Na mijn grote broer moest ik natuurlijk ook iets zeggen en schrijven! Omdat ik eigenlijk, ook al 'vechten' we soms zoals broers doen, alles wil doen wat hij doet!
(Oh, behalve mij vingers in mijn mond doen zegt Mama net)
Dus hier komt het, mijn vader zal proberen om wat nieuwe dingen te vertellen die gebeurd zijn de laatste maanden, niet gemakkelijk want er is bijna elke dag wel iets nieuws voor mij! En de laatste keer dat ik 'vrij' mocht spreken was in november 2012.
Ih ben erg nieuwsgierig en meestal erg enthousiast over dingen. Soms moet ik wel even wennen aan iets of iemand maar het gaat uitendelijk meestal goed.
Tegenwoordig geef ik vaak ook modeadvies:
I zei aan mama dat ze een jurk aan moest!
Soms vertel ik haar dat ze op een princes lijkt!
Ik zeg aan mijn ouders als er iets met Matthew is (altijd):
-"Matthew's got crying knees", als Matthew aan het huilen was omdat zijn knie pijn deed
- "When Matthew was sleeping his tummy was dirty" (heeft geen uitleg nodig ;-)
- 'doe normaal' - van wie heeft hij dat?
- "don't mess me around, Matthew", bazig doen

IPad: om films op YouTube te bekijken, zoals Pink Panther, Pingu en Peppa Pig (met behulp van Matt)
Fotos kijken, maakt niet uit waar. Hij heeft 2 foto boekjes, een met fotos van ons huis en mensen in Nederland en een met zijn vrienden van hier.
DVDs kijken: hij heeft geduld ontwikkeld en kan nu een hele film afkijken: Shrek, Madagascar en Tinga Tinga tales, een DVD dit hij voor Sinter Klaas kreeg.
Kieran heeft ook een nieuwe bijnaam in de familie: "Kleine Dik Dik", dit is tijdens onze reis naar de Maasai Mara ontstaan, hij vond het zelf een leuke dier maar om dat hij zo langzaam en rommelig maar groeien doet hij wel.
Dag allemaal hopelijk tot in mei als alles goed gaat. Kwaheri!
Yes! Gisteren werd een positieve uitspraak gedaan over onze adoptie en de woorden "adoption granted" uitgesproken met onze advocaat als getuige. Om 21.00 uur gisteravond kregen we het verlossende SMS. van Mr Ogugu. Hij heeft sinds 12 maart bijna dagelijks contact gehad met de clerk van de rechter, toen we uitspraak zouden krijgen. Nu moeten we wachten op de officiele Adoption Order die een week duurt, daarna de Adoption Certificate. Daarna nog wat papieren en legalisaties een kunnen we het Keniaanse paspoort gaan aanvragen en onze tickets naar huis boeken.

Met Kieran gaat het prima, woensdag ging hij voor het eerst met een vriendje spelen samen met Matthew, naar Owen (8) en Benjamin (4); een nieuw gezin in Kenia. De jongens hebben ook al bij ons gespeeld, jammer dat we ze hier moeten achterlaten....
Met zijn Engels gaat het heel goed, hij maakt steeds langere zinnen met de juiste woordvolgorde. De Engelse juf op school zegt dat hij een echte kletsmajoor is die van lachen houdt. Tegenovergestelde zegt de Nederlands juf dat hij erg stil is in de klas maar volgt alles en ook weer veel lacht. Thuis praat hij best veel Nederlands, wijn hebben daar geen zorgen over, maar het is toch zijn 3e taal dus zal even duren.
Maar goed, dit is al ons 100ste blog bericht.
We hopen dat iedereen het nog steeds leuk vind wat we schrijven en ons blijft volgen voor een aantal weken meer? We zijn erg gelukkig en dankbaar en hopen nog meer te delen over onze adoptiereis wanneer we ons voorbereiden om naar huis te gaan naar Nederland met Kieran.
Laat het ons weten als er vragen zijn, reacties of verzoeken om het over een onderwerp te hebben!

Dagelijks Leven 10 - Daily Life in Nairobi,Kenya 10
Hallo, daar zijn we dan weer...
Helaas zijn we nog steeds aan het wachten op onze laatste rechtzaak, de Uitspraak van het gehele adoptieproces. Die zou op 12 maart plaatsvinden maar zonder veel reden ging dat niet door.
De rechter die we bij de 2de zaak hadden doet ook 'the Judgement' en hij heeft het erg druk nu.
We hebben natuurlijk veel contact met onze advocaat en wachten het maar af, meer kunnen we niet doen.
In de media, en zeker ook sociale media, is er veel aandacht voor een andere rechtzaak, die van presidents kanidaat Odinga tegen de 'voorlopige winnaar' Kenyatta en de kiescommissie IEBC.
De uitspraak wordt nog in maart verwacht, hopelijk blijft het gezonde verstand hier zegevieren!
Zoals gezegd 4 maart en daarna verder is het relatief rustig geweest in Nairobi, los van de vele (duizenden) campagneposters die overal nog hangen, liggen en rondwaaien is er weinig te merken.
En het feit dat het verkeer weer op gang gekomen is, maar de zakelijke wereld is nog afwachtend...

Ondertussen ben ik al meer in Kibera geweest, onder andere met Christian Ministeries in Africa de organisatie waar Grace, Kieran's tehuis ook onder valt, het lijkt niet dat je aanwezigheid veel helpt, maar alle kleine beetjes helpen zullen we maar zeggen. Een beetje praten en spelen met de kinderen en wat achterlaten. En het houdt mij natuurlijk bezig.

De jongens hebben beide 'portfolio-map besprekingen' gehad waarbij we als ouders konden horen hoe het op school gaat. (Over Kieran meer later, is ook maar net op school). Matthew heeft wat plusjes en minnetjes vergeleken met het vorige rapport, maar over het algemeen gaat het heel goed! Hij vind de IPC (International Primary Curriculum) manier van lesgeven met thema's en ook de school zelf nu erg leuk, wat zal hij dat straks missen ... (maar blij zijn z'n vriendjes in Hoofddorp weer te zien ;-)
Om Nederland straks weer binnen te komen moesten we (weer) een medische verklaring hebben dus had ik een Dagje uit met Kieran! Naar de dokter op Ngong Road, lunchen bij Karen Crossroads, naar Grace Children's Center Langata en tenslotte naar de Galleria Mall. Hier ontmoeten we mensen van de kerk in Washington, USA die Grace al heel lang ondersteunen en ook Kieran al sinds het begin kennen. Hij werd verwend met een ijsje en herkende de gezichten, namen is wat lastiger.
Matt zijn verjaardags weekend was leuk en dat stond al in een stukkie, gisteren/dit weekend hadden we Jane haar verjaardag.Voor Jane haar verjaardag wilde ze graag meer weten over thee!
En gingen we naar Kiambethu Tea farm in Limuru voor een uitleg, rondleiding en uitgebreide lunch.
Op de zondag was er een lekkere Tiramisu taart en kaarten, kadootjes en als een extra presentje de halve dag geen stroom door een kapotte aggregaat-generator...
En op maandag was het alweer feest, want Tante Wilma & Mike kwamen op bezoek! Wilma was zondag op het vliegtuig gestapt naar Nairobi en bleef en dagje bij ons,en ze bracht heel veel leuke dingen voor ons allemaal! Kaarten en brieven voor ons en de post vanuit Montfoort die Jolanda vorig jaar al geprobeerd had naar ons te sturen! (alles klopte dus we weten ook niet waarom het niet gewoon bezorgd is ...?) De jongens kunnen straks weer naar hartelust schildren en knutselen*
Op dinsdag kwam Mike, die bij neef Dick sliep en de bus had geboekt, om haar weer op te pikken met de tassen voor Happy Rock Center {HRC} in Likoni-Mombasa.[ tussendoor hadden wij Nel van HRC ook gezien en wat spullen kunnen meegeven] We zullen Wilma en Mike zeker nog meer zien!

Maandag de 25ste was ook een spannende dag voor Matthew, want hij mocht afzwemmen voor zijn C diploma! Met Ome Mike die Kieran bezig hield en Wilma die mooie foto's maakte konden we er allemaal nog meer plezier aan beleven. Een paar dagen en dan begint de Paasvakantie alweer voor de jongens * knutselen! en we gaan er ook nog even tussenuit naar de kust.
Ondertussen proberen we een beetje contact te houden met iedereen via de email, Facebook updates en Skype. Iedereen is meer dan welkom om te reageren, er komt altijd een antwoord
Wat komt er nog op 't blog ? De volgende onderwerpen zit ik nog over na te denken :

Hello, here we are again!
Unfortunately we are still waiting for our last court case, for the judgement on the whole process. This was supposed to have taken place on 12th March but for no given reason, it didn't go ahead. The judge who we had for the 2nd case also makes the judgement and he is very busy. Of course we are in touch with our lawyer and are waiting, that's all we can do.
In the media, and especially on the social media, there is a lot of attention for another court case, that of the presidential candidate Odinga against the 'temporary' winner Kenyatta and the election committee IEBC. The ruling is expected in March, we hope that common sense will reign.
As already mentioned, on 4th March and afterwards it was fairly quiet in Nairobi, apart from the many (thousands) of campaign posters hanging, lying and blowing around everywhere there is nothing else notable. And the fact that the traffic is back to normal, but the business world is still waiting.

I have been into Kibera again, with Christian Ministeries in Africa, the organisation that also includes Grace, Kieran's children's home. It doesn't seem that my presence achieves much but every little bit helps. Playing with the children, talking to them and giving them something. And it keeps me busy of course.

The boys have both had 'portfolio meetings' during which we as parents were told how things are going at school. (More about Kieran later, as he has only just started school). Matthew had some higher marks and some lower marks than last time but in general he's doing really well. He enjoys the IPC (International Primary Curriculum) method of teaching using themes and loves the school itself, which he is going to miss later when we leave (but he'll be happy to see his friends in Hoofddorp again ;-)
In order to permit Kieran into the Netherlands later, we needed a (another) medical declaration confirming his good health so I had a day out with Kieran. First we went to the doctor on the Ngong Road, had lunch at Karen Crossroads, then went to Grace Children's Center and then onto the Galleria Mall. Here we met some people from the church in Washington, USA who have been supporting Grace Center for a very long time, and who have known Kieran the whole time he was there. He was treated to an ice cream and recognised the faces, but the names were harder.
Matt's birthday weekend was fun and I already wrote about that in an earlier blog. Yesterday/this weekend we celebrated Jane's birthday. She wanted to know more about tea so we visited Kiambethu Tea Farm in Limuru for a talk, a tour and a long lunch on the lawn of the farm. On Sunday we had a yummy tiramisu cake and cards, and as a nice extra there was no electricity for half the day due to a broken generator.
And there was more fun on Monday because Aunty Wilma and Mike came for a visit! Wilma got on the plane on Sunday in Amsterdam and arrived in Nairobi early Monday morning. She stayed overnight with us and brought lots of goodies and post for all of us. The boys will be able to paint, do crafts and read to their heart's content in the school holidays!
Mike stayed with his cousin Dickson and came back Tuesday morning to collect Wilma and her bags to catch the bus down to Mombasa. Wilma is here for her twice-yearly volunteer visit to Happy Rock Center {HRC} in Likoni-Mombasa. She had brought lots of things with her again as usual for the children there so was weighed down. Anyway we have plans to see Wilma and Mike again while she's here.
Monday 25th March was an exciting day for Matthew, because he was swimming for his C diploma. Uncle Mike looked after Kieran and Wilma took some great photos so we could enjoy watching Matthew. He did really well and passed his exam easily. In a couple of days the Easter holidays are starting so the boys have 2 weeks off and we are planning a few days holiday down to the coast.
In the meantime we try to stay in touch with people via e-mail, Facebook and Skype. Everyone is welcome to react, I will always reply!
What else am I going to blog about? I'm thinking about the following subjects:
- Books, for and about children, books about Africa and what I have read and enjoyed
- Security, all about that in Nairobi and Kenya
- Aid organisations, which ones are here and what do they do?
- The adoption procedure, after the final court case and judgement

De rechter die we bij de 2de zaak hadden doet ook 'the Judgement' en hij heeft het erg druk nu.
We hebben natuurlijk veel contact met onze advocaat en wachten het maar af, meer kunnen we niet doen.
In de media, en zeker ook sociale media, is er veel aandacht voor een andere rechtzaak, die van presidents kanidaat Odinga tegen de 'voorlopige winnaar' Kenyatta en de kiescommissie IEBC.
De uitspraak wordt nog in maart verwacht, hopelijk blijft het gezonde verstand hier zegevieren!
Zoals gezegd 4 maart en daarna verder is het relatief rustig geweest in Nairobi, los van de vele (duizenden) campagneposters die overal nog hangen, liggen en rondwaaien is er weinig te merken.
En het feit dat het verkeer weer op gang gekomen is, maar de zakelijke wereld is nog afwachtend...
Ondertussen ben ik al meer in Kibera geweest, onder andere met Christian Ministeries in Africa de organisatie waar Grace, Kieran's tehuis ook onder valt, het lijkt niet dat je aanwezigheid veel helpt, maar alle kleine beetjes helpen zullen we maar zeggen. Een beetje praten en spelen met de kinderen en wat achterlaten. En het houdt mij natuurlijk bezig.

Advertising in Kenya - Reclame in Kenia
This time a post about advertising, what we see and experience as consumers, a bit of text but quite some more by photographs.
For Shopping Malls, Super Markets, Satellite TV, Newspapers, Beer, and even Politicians a Bill Board seems to be the way to advertise your wares in Nairobi, and the rest of Kenya too!
There will be an occasional insert in the Newspapers, but not much in the way of advertising, except for the jobs/vacancy pages. Before the election week most supermarkets announced their closing on the 4th of March through the paper.
The weekend magazines (in the paper) do quite often have editorials about products, but that is limited to clothes, jewellery and occasionally gadgets like smart phones, digital cameras and digital TV boxes. As with the billboards it is usually the 'same suspects' on television too, the big companies...
Underneath some of our favourite examples of the creative ways advertising works here,
Your building is painted and the brand is seen by all passers'by!
(Yes, we do quite like the Farmers Choice sausages too ;-)
And sometimes you just have to advertise by showing what wares you have got.

Bovenste Foto (nieuwe reclame bord wordt opgezet) lijkt net of de man eronder is gevallen, maar hij ligt te slapen NAAST het bord/frame dus alles is goed!

De wereld door mijn ogen.... Matthew....The world according to me
Hallo Allemaal,
Op afgelopen zondag 10 Maart ben ik al weer 8 jaar geworden! Samen met mijn ouders en Kieran ging ik naar Village Market, daar gingen we mini-golfen en daarna zwemmen in een zwempark met wel 6 glijbanen!! En ook nog een wildwaterbaan waar je met rubberbanden overheen kon gaan.
Toen gingen we lekker eten ook ijs!
en toen we thuis kwamen hadden we een cake met 8 kaarsen en een 8 erop en toen gingen we skypen met m'n neefjes en oom & tantes.
Ik heb al veel kadootjes gekregen en kaarten en een brief van Aja (en papa had berichtjes op Feestboek voor mij) en een digitale kaart van tante Wilma, als zij komt krijg ik nog een kado, (het is een iPod waar ik zelf ook voor gespaard heb) Vet Cool!
(Mijn vader typt dit want hij kan dat beter dan ik, maar wel echt langzaam, maar wel wat ik zeg hoor mijn mama kan het met haar ogen dicht en veel vlugger!)
Ik werk goed op school, Ik vind het leuk op school en heb veel vrienden; Ben, Fher, Storm en Luka, maar die pest mij soms wel, en mijn vriendinnen zijn Valerie, Nora en Imani. En ik krijg nog 1 rapport hier!
Ik ga het (denk ik) niet leuk vinden als we weg moeten.En dat is best wel raar want toen we naar Schiphol gingen {in Augustus vorig jaar} was ik erg verdrietig. Als we weg gaan zingen ze op school Kwaheri (tot ziens) maar ik denk dat Kieran niet gaat huilen, want die snapt er niets van ;-) {op de vraag of hij gaat huilen}.
Door hier in Kenia te zijn wil ik meer weten over mijn eigen adoptie en mijn land Ethiopie,
en een keer daar naar toe met mijn vader en moeder en broertje.
Ik vind Kenia nu wel heel leuk om alle dieren te zien, wilde dieren, mijn favorieten zijn "zebra bottoms" en van Kieran ook. Ook hou ik wel van het Jachtluipaard (Cheetah) want daar deed ik een spreekbeurt over en ze zijn heel erg snel.
Ik ben blij dat er in de vakantieweek geen oorlog kwam in Kenia, en hoop dat Uhuru (Kenyatta)
goed voor alle mensen en vooral kinderen zal zijn in Kenia.
Grappige Uitspraken (vinden mijn ouders)
-Die van jounes, die van jou { mischien dat ik aan het Engels denk ?}
-That is my mudder, That is my mother.
-Papa heeft bejaarde haar { Ja, zegt Papa, Ik heb erg grijze haren gekregen van jullie twee !}
-Papa, mag ik mijn Welterusten kleren aan doen ? (pyjama)
- Mijn 'bevelen' aan Kieran bij het zwemmen (hoe hij moet duiken) zijn ook erg grappig met Engels, Nederlands en af en toe een woordje Swahili, soms geduldig en soms schreeuwend...
Commentaar van papa & mama
* Matthew stelt nu meer vragen over zijn adoptie dan ooit tevoren.
* Hij vind het verschil tussen rijke (grote auto's & huizen) en arme mensen (bedelaars zonder benen op een plankje met wielen) soms erg moeilijk te begrijpen. {maar dat hebben wij ook ...}
* Een begleid bezoek naar een school in Kibera staat nog op het programma
*Matthew helpt graag in de keuken, cupcakes maken en afwassen en spaghetti bolognesi {makes you crazy} maken met mama.
* Hij wil goed leren op school en later de arme kinderen helpen in Afrika.(Los van computer spelletjes maken )

Hello everyone,
Last Sunday, 10th March, it was my 8th birthday. Together with my parents and Kieran I went to Village Market, we played mini-golf and then went swimming in a water park with 6 slides! And another rapids where you could slide down on rubber tyres.
Then we went for a nice dinner and had ice cream too!
And when we got home we had a cake with 8 candles and a number 8 on it and I Skyped with my cousinds and aunties and uncle.
I had a few presents and cards and a letter from Aja (and daddy had messages on Facebook for me) and I had a digital card from Aunty Wilma, and when she comes over she's bringing me a present (it's an iPod which I helped save up for too!) Way cool!!
(My dad is typing this because he can do it better than I can, though he's really slow, but you know what, my mom can type much faster and with her eyes closed!!)
I'm working really hard at school, I really like school and I've got lots of friends: Ben, Fher, Storm and Luka, but he teases me sometimes, and my girl friends are Valerie, Nora and Imani. And I will get one more report here!
I don't think I'm going to like it when we have to leave. And that's really funny because when we went to Amsterdam airport last August, I was very sad. When we leave school, all the children will sing 'Kwaheri' for us (goodbye in Swahili) but I don't think Kieran will cry because he doesn't really understand (to the question if he is going to cry).
By being here in Kenya, it makes me want to know more about my own adoption and my country Ethiopia. I want to go there some time with my dad and mom and brother.
I really like Kenya because of all the animals, wild animals, my favourites are "zebra bottoms" and Kieran likes them too. I also really like cheetahs and I did a speech about them at schook and they run really fast.
I am happy that there was no war in Kenya during the school holidays and I hope that Uhuru (Kenyatta) looks after all the people, especially the children, in Kenya.
Funny things I say (according to my parents)
-That is my mudder, (mother)
-Papa has got old man's hair {Yes says papa, I have got very grey hair thanks to you two!}
-Papa, can I put my goodnight clothes on? (pyjama)
- I also like to boss Kieran around especially at swimming (like how he has to dive) and I sometimes forget and talk a mixture of English, Dutch and Swahili. Sometimes I am really patient but sometimes I shout at him too......
Comments from mom and dad
* Matthew is asking now more questions than ever about his own adoption
* He finds it really hard to understand the difference between the rich (big cars and houses) and the poor (beggars without legs pushing themselves along on a plank on wheels - and we do too :-(
* He can sometimes be really insightful and ask well thought out questions about poor children and if everyone gave something that poverty could be resolved
* We are still going to take him on a visit to a school in Kibera (slum) to see how it really is for children with nothing
*Matthew loves to help in the kitchen, making cupcakes, washing up and drying up and cooking spaghetti bolognese {makes you crazy} with mom
* He wants to do well at school and come back to Africa to help the poor children (when he is not inventing computer games :-))

Ik vind Kenia nu wel heel leuk om alle dieren te zien, wilde dieren, mijn favorieten zijn "zebra bottoms" en van Kieran ook. Ook hou ik wel van het Jachtluipaard (Cheetah) want daar deed ik een spreekbeurt over en ze zijn heel erg snel.
Ik ben blij dat er in de vakantieweek geen oorlog kwam in Kenia, en hoop dat Uhuru (Kenyatta)
goed voor alle mensen en vooral kinderen zal zijn in Kenia.

* Matthew stelt nu meer vragen over zijn adoptie dan ooit tevoren.
* Hij vind het verschil tussen rijke (grote auto's & huizen) en arme mensen (bedelaars zonder benen op een plankje met wielen) soms erg moeilijk te begrijpen. {maar dat hebben wij ook ...}
* Een begleid bezoek naar een school in Kibera staat nog op het programma
*Matthew helpt graag in de keuken, cupcakes maken en afwassen en spaghetti bolognesi {makes you crazy} maken met mama.

Hello everyone,
Last Sunday, 10th March, it was my 8th birthday. Together with my parents and Kieran I went to Village Market, we played mini-golf and then went swimming in a water park with 6 slides! And another rapids where you could slide down on rubber tyres.
(My dad is typing this because he can do it better than I can, though he's really slow, but you know what, my mom can type much faster and with her eyes closed!!)
I'm working really hard at school, I really like school and I've got lots of friends: Ben, Fher, Storm and Luka, but he teases me sometimes, and my girl friends are Valerie, Nora and Imani. And I will get one more report here!
I don't think I'm going to like it when we have to leave. And that's really funny because when we went to Amsterdam airport last August, I was very sad. When we leave school, all the children will sing 'Kwaheri' for us (goodbye in Swahili) but I don't think Kieran will cry because he doesn't really understand (to the question if he is going to cry).
By being here in Kenya, it makes me want to know more about my own adoption and my country Ethiopia. I want to go there some time with my dad and mom and brother.
I really like Kenya because of all the animals, wild animals, my favourites are "zebra bottoms" and Kieran likes them too. I also really like cheetahs and I did a speech about them at schook and they run really fast.
I am happy that there was no war in Kenya during the school holidays and I hope that Uhuru (Kenyatta) looks after all the people, especially the children, in Kenya.

-Papa has got old man's hair {Yes says papa, I have got very grey hair thanks to you two!}
-Papa, can I put my goodnight clothes on? (pyjama)
- I also like to boss Kieran around especially at swimming (like how he has to dive) and I sometimes forget and talk a mixture of English, Dutch and Swahili. Sometimes I am really patient but sometimes I shout at him too......

* Matthew is asking now more questions than ever about his own adoption
* He finds it really hard to understand the difference between the rich (big cars and houses) and the poor (beggars without legs pushing themselves along on a plank on wheels - and we do too :-(
* He can sometimes be really insightful and ask well thought out questions about poor children and if everyone gave something that poverty could be resolved
* We are still going to take him on a visit to a school in Kibera (slum) to see how it really is for children with nothing
*Matthew loves to help in the kitchen, making cupcakes, washing up and drying up and cooking spaghetti bolognese {makes you crazy} with mom
* He wants to do well at school and come back to Africa to help the poor children (when he is not inventing computer games :-))

Open letter to the President of Kenya - Brief aan de President van Kenia
Dear Mr. Kenyatta, Kilimani, Nairobi 9th March 2013
We are here still awaiting the official announcement of the IEBC, unfortunately like in the past days it is a wating game without any clear explanation of what is happening.
Anyway, let me congratulate you on your win.
It seems with so many votes from the Kenyan people that the victory will be yours, not withstanding any actions- or their outcome- your competitor Mr. Odinga might take.
Later this month in March you will start your presidency over Kenya for the next 5 years.
We hope you will be the one politician who delivers on his promises, and not state any 'vague reasons' for not doing things in the years to come! Anyway with your alleged family fortune I am certain you can help the budget a little bit if it is necessary ;-)
Your brother manages the Kenyatta interests, but hey! You are the president and manage the country!
One of the promises most remembered by us is the free laptop for all children after finishing Primary school, that is absolutely great! (by the way my brother in law works for a computer company, I am certain they would like to do business with you, contact me when you have a chance :-)
Maybe you are wondering what my personal interest is with your presidency ?
Well apart from a "kitu kidogo" with the laptops, we have lived here for a while now and grown to love this country Kenya and wish all the best for it and the people who live here. (Oh, and before I forget I also have a Kenyan brother in law who can always do with a better job if offered!)
Anyway, back to my point - you see I can talk with the best of the politicians using many words without particulary making any point, I learned from a good friend called 'Ruud Lubbers'- we are here to adopt a little Kenyan boy of 4 years old and love him very much and hope for all the best in his future with us! We also hope that he can be and stay proud of his country of birth Kenya.
So far these elections have been overall a great expression of good citizenship with people waiting for nearly a day in a queu to vote and patiently waiting (Still at 12.00pm, still this is Africa) for the final results!
The voter turnout of around 85% is also extremely impressive as were the Presidential Debates broadcast on all the television channels. Now we hope we can follow the progression of your country for the next 5 years and be equally impressed!
We hope you are into keeping your promises! This ICC business is very unfortunate but we hope you will come to The Hague in The Netherlands in July - another beautifull country with really quite nice people - a person will stay innocent untill proven guilty after all, and maybe we can talk about these laptops and this job?
We also look forward, in a year or so{after our deal}, to seeing all the children we have got to know using the internet and maybe you will be able to give some of them a masterclass in Skype ?
We really like the idea of seeing Brenda on Skype, or Steve having his own Facebook account!
We also hope that these Children (of Grace Children's Center) will be able to reach their chosen dreams with the help of your laptops!
That Lilly and Mueni - and all the nameless others - will not need their 'brothers and sisters' help who want to be Nurses, Docters and Surgeons, in the future because they are healthy and fine after all your plans for a better health care have been implemented! We also hope that the need for lawyers will be less, because you have found a way to solve all the land disputes and compensate the poor people who now live in uncertainty... Also that our little friend who wants to become an engineer can be part of fulfillment of all the vision 2030 goals of creating new roads, fixing existing ones and maintaining all. And that the country will be safe so that our little friend who wants to be a pilot can fly passengers instead of bombs to attack the terrorists who are instead good and trusted neighbours.
Hopefully you will be able to implement the constitution and improve on the works of the IEBC so the time path of the 2018 elections can be a bit better still, and 'our friend, the future policeman' can be there to direct the traffic (on the new moderately busy roads) and to show people (tourists!) the way.
(Oh, and on a very personal note - if at all possible, maybe you can also look into the whole Adoption Procedure both National as well as International, especially: the visa's, clarity of procedures and the overall length of the procedure - not for us, but for the many friends we have made here.
Maybe if all goes well In Kenya the necessity of adoptions will eventually be far less than today).
Talking of tourists, we absolutely love your country, the people of all ethnic backgrounds, but also the many animals and natural beauty, it really is a blessed country! We do hope you will do your best to ban poaching and preserve Kenya's beautiful National Parks and Reserves for future generations within your borders and all those people in the world who have not seen it yet!
We understood you were a student at a Catholic school so we wish you all Gods help and our prayers- and we are certain of many adoptive families- are with you, to give you the wisdom to use all your intellect and power to good use and to have the humility to work with your former competitors to serve the people of Kenya to the best of your ability.

Het lijkt duidelijk dat met zoveel stemmen van het Keniaanse volk dat de overwinning voor U is,

Later deze maand in Maart begint Uw presidentschap voor Kenia voor de komende 5 jaar.

Hoe dan ook met uw familie vermogen ben ik er zeker van dat U het budget een beetje kan helpen als dat nodig is ;-)

Goed, terug naar het punt wat ik wilde maken - U ziet ik kan al praten als een politicus, veel woorden gebruiken zonder echt iets te zeggen, dat heb ik geleerd van een 'goed vriend' die Ruud Lubbers heet-
wij zijn hier om een kleine Keniaanse jongen van 4 te adopteren en houden heel veel van hem en hopen voor al het goeds in zijn toekomst met ons!We hopen ook dat hij trots kan zijn en blijven op zijn geboorteland Kenia.
Tot zover zijn deze verkiezingen een uitdrukking geweest vann goed burgerschap met mensen die bijna een dag geduldig in de rij stonden te wachten om rustig te stemmen en nu geduldig wachten (van 11.00-14.00 ! Maar ja dit is Afrika) voor de uiteindelijke officiele resultaten!
De opkomst van de stemmers met 86% is ook erg indrukwekkend net als de Presidentiele Debatten
uitgezonden op alle TV kanalen.
Nu hopen we dat we de verdere ontwikkelingen kunnen zien in Kenia, Uw land voor de komende 5 jaar en net zo onder de indruk zullen zijn!
We hopen dat U zich aan Uw beloften gaat houden! Die ICC zaak is natuurlijk erg vervelend maar we hopen dat U wel naar Den Haag zal komen in Juli - nog een mooi land met echt vriendelijke mensen - een persoon blijft onschuldig tot het tegendeel bewezen is, en misschien kunnen we het dan eens hebben over de laptops en die baan ?
We kijken er ook naar uit, in een jaar of zo {na onze deal}, om te horen dat alle kinderen die we hier hebben leren kennen internet gebruiken en misschien kunt U een paar van hun wel een Masterclass in Skype geven ?
We vinden het echt een leuk idee om straks Brenda op Skype te zien, of dat Steve zijn eigen Facebook pagina heeft!
We hopen ook dat deze kinderen (van Grace Childrens Center) in staat zullen zijn om de door hun gekozen toekomstdromen waar te maken met de hulp van uw laptops!
And also that Lily en Mueni - en alle andere naamloze kinderen - hun 'broeders en zusters' hulp niet nodig zullen hebben die Verpleegkundigen,Dokters en Chirurgen willen worden in de toekomst, omdat ze een goede gezondheid hebben nadat al uw plannen voor een betere gezondheidszorg geimplementeerd zijn! We hopen ook dat de noodzaak voor adocaten minder zal zijn, omdat u een manier heeft gevonden om alle problemen rondom land eigendom op te lossen en de arme mensen compenseert die nu in zoveel onzekerheid leven of morgen hun schammele hutje er nog wel staat ...
EN ook dat onze kleine vriend, die ingenieur wil worden een deel uit kan maken van het uitvoeren van alle doelen in Vision 2030 om nieuwe wegen te maken, bestaande wegen verbeteren en alles goed te onderhouden.En dat het land veilig is zodat ons vriendje die piloot wil worden passagiers kan vervoeren in plaats van bommen om terroristen aan te vallen die nu goede en betrouwbare buren zijn geworden.
Hopelijk is het mogelijk om de nieuwe grondwet geheel te implementeren en het werk van de IEBC kiescommissie te verbeteren zodat het tijdsplan van de verkiezingen in 2018 nog een beetje beter kan worden, en 'onze vriend, de toekomstige poltieman' er kan zijn om het verkeer te regelen (op de nieuwe redelijk drukke wegen) en om mensen (toeristen!) de weg te wijzen.
(Oh, voor iets erg persoonlijks - als het enigzins mogelijk is, misschien kan U ook kijken naar de gehele Adoptie Prodecure zowel Nationaal als Internationaal, vooral: de visa's, duidelijkheid in de procedures, de algehele lengte van de procedure - niet voor ons, maar voor de vele vrienden die we hier hebben leren kennen.
Misschien als alles goed gaat in Kenia dat dan de noodzaak voor adopties veel minder zal worden dan vandaag.)
Over toeristen gesproken, we houden van uw land, de mensen van allerlei ethnische achtergronden, maar ook van de vele dieren en het natuurschoon, het is echt een gezegend land!We hopen dat uw regering zijn best zal doen om het stropen tegen te gaan en de schitterende National Parks en Reserves van Kenia zal proberen te behouden voor toekomstige generaties binnen de eigen landsgrenzen en voor al die mensen in de wereld die het nog niet gezien hebben!

We hopen ook dat deze kinderen (van Grace Childrens Center) in staat zullen zijn om de door hun gekozen toekomstdromen waar te maken met de hulp van uw laptops!
And also that Lily en Mueni - en alle andere naamloze kinderen - hun 'broeders en zusters' hulp niet nodig zullen hebben die Verpleegkundigen,Dokters en Chirurgen willen worden in de toekomst, omdat ze een goede gezondheid hebben nadat al uw plannen voor een betere gezondheidszorg geimplementeerd zijn! We hopen ook dat de noodzaak voor adocaten minder zal zijn, omdat u een manier heeft gevonden om alle problemen rondom land eigendom op te lossen en de arme mensen compenseert die nu in zoveel onzekerheid leven of morgen hun schammele hutje er nog wel staat ...
EN ook dat onze kleine vriend, die ingenieur wil worden een deel uit kan maken van het uitvoeren van alle doelen in Vision 2030 om nieuwe wegen te maken, bestaande wegen verbeteren en alles goed te onderhouden.En dat het land veilig is zodat ons vriendje die piloot wil worden passagiers kan vervoeren in plaats van bommen om terroristen aan te vallen die nu goede en betrouwbare buren zijn geworden.
Hopelijk is het mogelijk om de nieuwe grondwet geheel te implementeren en het werk van de IEBC kiescommissie te verbeteren zodat het tijdsplan van de verkiezingen in 2018 nog een beetje beter kan worden, en 'onze vriend, de toekomstige poltieman' er kan zijn om het verkeer te regelen (op de nieuwe redelijk drukke wegen) en om mensen (toeristen!) de weg te wijzen.
(Oh, voor iets erg persoonlijks - als het enigzins mogelijk is, misschien kan U ook kijken naar de gehele Adoptie Prodecure zowel Nationaal als Internationaal, vooral: de visa's, duidelijkheid in de procedures, de algehele lengte van de procedure - niet voor ons, maar voor de vele vrienden die we hier hebben leren kennen.
Misschien als alles goed gaat in Kenia dat dan de noodzaak voor adopties veel minder zal worden dan vandaag.)
Over toeristen gesproken, we houden van uw land, de mensen van allerlei ethnische achtergronden, maar ook van de vele dieren en het natuurschoon, het is echt een gezegend land!We hopen dat uw regering zijn best zal doen om het stropen tegen te gaan en de schitterende National Parks en Reserves van Kenia zal proberen te behouden voor toekomstige generaties binnen de eigen landsgrenzen en voor al die mensen in de wereld die het nog niet gezien hebben!
We begrepen dat U een student was op een Katholieke school dus wensen wij U al Gods hulp en onze gebeden - en we denken zeker ook van veel adoptie families - zijn met U, om U de wijsheid te geven om al Uw intellect en macht aan te wenden voor de goede zaak en dat U de nederigheid heeft om met uw tegenstanders samen te werken om de mensen van Kenia te dienen naar uw beste vermogen.

Stammen - Tribes in Kenya
Een schrijven over de verschillende stammen in het land waar we nu al weer een poosje mogen wonen.Er wordt meestal gezegd dat er ongeveer 42 stammen zijn -met daarin weer onderverdelingen-in Kenia met allen een eigen traditie, gebruiken en cultuur.
Je stam, (ethniciteit) en dus achtergrond is voor veel mensen erg belangrijk, het is hun eerste taal, identiteit en cultuur, daarna volgt (qua taal) swahili en daarna meestal engels.De Kenianen zijn een slim volk, vinden wij, op jonge leeftijd worden er al 3 talen gesproken! De grenzen tussen de stammen worden wel minder strikt door de tijd heen door gemengde huwelijken en het vele verhuizen voor werk, om een baan te zoeken, wat Kenianen regelmatig doen.
Er zijn dus erg veel stammen, vaak wordt er een onderverdeling gemaakt in de taalgroepen;
Bantoe-Nilotische-Koesjitische volken, om de banden tussen de stammen en de rol over de landsgrenzen beter aan te kunnen geven,ik zal er een aantal benoemen, met algemene vestiging in Kenia, grote binnen de totale bevolking, gebruiken en bekende afstammelingen ;
Meru dorpsfeest, village party >
Kikuyu en de verwante Meru, vertegenwoordigen de grootste groep in Kenya met bijna 25% van de bevolking. De eerste president, Jomo Kenyatta en de huidige (05-03-2013) Kibaki zijn beide Kikuyu.
Ook 1 van onze vaste chauffeurs en een juf op school zijn beide Kikuyu.Zoals bovenstaande al laat zien zijn ze vaak actief in de politiek en ook in de commercie.Voor deze stam is Mount Kenya heilig dat is waar hun God, Engai woont. Ze wonen in Central Province rondom Mount Kenya en bij Nyeri. Van de Meru wordt wel gedacht dat ze de verloren stam van Israel zijn omdat veel tradities en gebruiken en de mythologie hetzelfde is als die van de 'oude' Israelieten, de taal lijkt op Kikuyu.

Kamba, (meervoud Akamba)
Zo'n 12% van de bevolking, wonen rondom Kitui, Machakos en Kwale aan de kust.Tegenwoordig bekend van hun artistieke werk zoals aardewerk, manden vlechten en mooie houtsnijwerk. Hun God is Ngai ook wel Mulungu genoemd een genadige God, de meeste Kamba zijn nu Christen. Onze toekomstige familieleden, Dickson, Stella, Jennifer en natuurlijk Mike zijn allen Kamba. Andere bekende stamgenoten zijn Dr.Willy Muthinga de Chief Justice van Kenya en Kalonzo Musyoka politicus.
Luhya,
Wonen in het (noord) westen van Kenia aan de grens met Oeganda waar ze ook wonen.
Samen met subgroepen maken ze zo'n 18% van de bevolking van Kenia, de 2de groep in grote.
Cultureel was vroeger het lange rouwproces bijzonder tot wel 40 dagen na het overlijden, tegenwoordig is het meestal een periode van een week met nog een ceremonie na 40 dagen. Onze favoriete oppas Mary is een Luhya, de voetbal club AFC Leopards was een specifieke Luhya club, waarvoor Victor Wanyama (Celtic) zijn vader speelde. De huidige presidentskanidaat, politicus Musalia Mudavadi is ook een Luhya.
Maasai,
Relatief klein, maar 2% van de totale bevolking, maar duidelijk aanwezig en welbekend in het Westen.De springende krijgers wonen voornamelijk in het zuiden aan de grens met Tanzania.en)
Volgens de (overdreven) reputatie de 'gevaarlijkste krijgers' van Oost-Afrika zijn ze welbekend bij het publiek. Met hun rood geverfde haar en rode shuka (deken) vallen ze zeker op, het is ook 1 van de stammen die nog steeds het meest vasthoudt aan hun originele traditionele bestaan, ze leven voornamelijk van hun vee en het vaste dieet bestaat uit melk & bloed van die koeien.Luo,
De huidige premier en presidentskanidaat Odinga is een Luo,(en zijn vader Oginga Odinga)- en zijn tijdgenoot Tom Mboya beide belangrijk geweest bij de onafhankelijkheid - en ook onze andere chauffeur & advocaat zijn afkomstig van deze stam. En de familie van Barack Obama, jawel de Amerikaanse president zijn Luo.Met 12% van de bevolking ook een belangrijke groep in de samenleving.Ze wonen voornamelijk in het westen, bij het Victoria Meer. Net als de Luhya zijn ze erg sportief en is voetbal belangrijk & ook de hedendaagse muziek met congolese invloeden en benga.
Kalenjin,
Deze stam komt uit de omgeving van Eldoret en Nandi, en maakt zo'n 11% uit van de bevolking.
Het is eigenlijk een verzameling van de Nandi, Kipsgis, Eleyo, Marakwet, Pokot en Tugen stammen.
Ze zijn tegenwoordig voornamelijk bekend van de vele atleten die veel prijzen winnen in de atletiek met hardlopen, meer dan 75% van de Keniaanse ateleten zijn Kalenjin. Het begon met Kip Keino in 1968 (Olympische Spelen) en de mensen die nu bekend zijn zoals Lornah Kiplagat, Paul Tergat
Ook de vorige president Moi, en Vice-presidents kanidaat Ruto zijn onder andere Kalenjin.
Borana,
Minder dan 0.1 % van de bevolking van Kenia. Leven voornamelijk in het noordoosten rondom Isiolo en Marsabit, verwant aan de Oromo uit Ethiopie. (De stam waar Matthew waarschijnlijk vanaf stamt.) Herders die hun lemen hutten nu vaak omgeruild hebben voor betonnen huizen en meer op 1 plek blijven wonen.
Kisii,
Zo'n 7% van de bevolking. Leven rondom de stad Kisii, bekend van het bewerken van speksteen en zeepsteen wat hier vandaan komt.Ook verbouwen ze veel koffie, thee en groenten.
Samburu,
Maken 0.5% van de bevolking uit. Ze zijn verwant aan de Maasai met wie ze de Maa taal delen.Wonen nu voornamelijk in het Noorden bij het gelijknamige natuurpark ten noorden van Mount Kenya. Net als de Maasai leven ze voornamelijk van hun vee en zijn leeftijdsgroepen belangrijk en leven ze in kleine familie groepen van 5-8 families samen.
Turkana,
1.5% van de bevolking. Wonen bij het gelijknamige meer in het Noordwesten en leven nu voornamelijk van de visvangst. Ze delen hun taal gedeeltelijk met het Maa van de Maasai en Samburu en zijn ook van origine veehoeders. Maar in tegenstelling tot de eerder genoemde stammen hebben ze het besnijden opgegeven. Wel zijn ze nog gewoon hun hoofden te versieren met modder & veren en hebben tattoo's.
El Molo,
In het noorwesten, bij Loyangalani rondom Lake Turkana,leven van visvangst aangevuld met nijlpaard en/of krokodil (om te eten!) indien nodig, met minder dan 500 mensen zou dit de kleinste stam van Afrika zijn. Ze zijn verwant aan de Rendille (0.1%) en leefden net als hun oorspronkelijk van kamelen en geiten.
Swahili,
(0.6% van de bevolking) wordt meer gezien als een "culturele stam/ethnische groep" dan een stam die een gezamenlijke biologische link delen.(oa Pate,Mvita,Amu,Bajun,Vumba en Ozi)
De taal, Kiswahili, (meestal Swahili genoemd) is ontwikkeld als communicatie middel tussen de Afrikanen, de Arabieren , de Perzen en later de Portugezen.
De meeste mensen wonen aan de kust in steden als, Mombasa,Malindi, Lamu en ook op Zanzibar.
Er zijn natruulijk nog veel meer, niet genoemde, stammen: zoals
Taita, Gabbra, Mijikenda, Kuria, Embu, Tharaka, Mbere, Taveta, Pokomo, Digo, Giriama, Duruma, Iteso,
Njemps, Sabaot, Terik, Galla, Boni, Orma, Somali en Sakuye en waarschijnlijk nog wel een aantal die ik vergeten ben..
En natuurlijk zijn er ook mensen van Aziatische afkomst, Arabische en Europese afkomst in dit land.
Het is eigenlijk best wel bijzonder hoe al deze mensen het meest van de tijd in vrede kunnen samenleven ondanks de vele verschillen in achtergrond, gebruiken en geloof.In een land waar het eigendom van land een groot (politiek) probleem vormt en er vaak te weinig middelen zijn om een normaal leven te kunnen lijden voor een groot deel (afhankelijk van de droogtes van 25-40%) van de samenleving. Terwijl er ook een deel van de bevolking is (vaak beperkt tot bepaalde ethnische groepen) van zo'n circa 10% die het eigenlijk altijd goed gaat en met hun grote auto's, grote compounds en huizen en buitenlandse bankrekeningen vaak het doel is van de vele gewelds misdrijven in het land.
Hieronder een overzichtje om een vergelijk te kunnen maken tussen de verschillende landen binnen het continent.

So this is a piece about the different tribes in this country where we are living for a while. There are approximately 42 tribes, with sub-groups, in Kenya, each with their own tradition, habits and culture. cultuur.
Your tribe, ethnicity and therefore your background is very important to most people here, it defines their first language, identity and culture; following that (as far as language goes) is the common language Swahili and also English. We think the Kenyans are therefore pretty smart people; from a young age they speak at least 3 languages. The boundaries between the tribes have become less strict as time has gone on, with mixed marriages and lots of moving around for work, looking for work etc, which Kenyans often do.
So there are a lot of tribes, usually the differentiation is made in the language groups:
Bantoe-Nilotische-Koesjitische people. To better explain the links between the tribes and the role in land boundaries that they play, I will name a few which are on the whole, stem from Kenya, although many of them cross country borders as they roam and settle. I'll mention the size of the people, habits and some well-known people from those tribes.
Meru village party >
Kikuyu and the related Meru,
Represent the biggest group in Kenya with about 25% of the population. The first president Jomo Kenyatta and the current (per 5th March 2103) Mwai Kibaki, are both Kikuyu.
Also one of our usual drivers and one of the teachers at school is Kikuyu. As the above already shows, they are often very active people in politics and also commerce. For this tribe, Mount Kenya is sacred as that is where their God, Engai lives. They live in the Central Province around Mount Kenya and by Nyeri. It is often thought that the Meru are the lost tribe of Israel because many of their traditions and habits and their mythology are the same as those of the old Israelites and their language resembles Kikuyu.
Kamba, (plural Akamba)
About 12% of the population, living around Kitui, Machakos and Kwale on the coast. They are well known for their creative work such as pottery, woven baskets and beautiful woodwork. Their God is Ngai, also called Mulungu, a merciful God; the most Kamba are now Christians. Our future in-laws Dickson, Stella, Jennifer and of course Mike are all Kamba. Other well known tribe members are Dr. Willy Muthinga (the Chief Justice of Kenya) and Kalonzo Musyoka, a politician.
Luhya,
These folk live in the north west of Kenya on the border with Uganda. Together with sub-groups, they make up about 18% of the population of Kenya, the second group in size. Previously their culture demanded a long period of mourning, up to 40 days after death. Nowadays this is a period of about a week with a ceremony after 40 days. Our favourite babysitter Mary is a Luhya and the football club AFC Leopards was specifically a Luhya club, in which Victor Wanyama's (Celtic) father played. One of the current presidential candidates, Musalia Mudavadi is also a Luhya.
Maasai,
A relatively small tribe representing just 2% of the population but they have a visible presence and are very well known in the west. These warriors who jump up and down live mainly in the south on the border with Tanzania, where they own the Maasai Mara land (game park). Due to their (exaggerated) reputation as the 'most dangerous warriors' of East Africa, they are well known to the public. With their red-dyed hair and red shuka (blanket) they are very noticeable. It is also one of the tribes which most holds onto their traditional values and way of life; they live mostly off their cattle and their permanent diet consists of blood (which they drain from a vein in the neck) and milk from their cattle.
Luo,
The current Prime Minister and presidential candidate Raila Odinga is a Luo. His father Oginga Odinga and his contemporary Tom Mboya both played important parts during Independence in the early 1960s. Our other usual driver and our lawyer also both belong to this tribe. And the family of Barack Obama, yes, the American President, are Luo. With 12% of the population they are also an important part of society. They live mostly in the west by Lake Victoria. Just like the Luhya, they are very sporty and football is very important to them. They are also very big in contemporary music with Congolese and benga influences.
Kalenjin,
This tribe comes from the northern areas around Eldoret and Nandi, and makes up about 11% of the population. They are really a collection of peoples from the Nandi, Kipsgis, Elegyo, Marakwet, Pokot en Tugen stammen. (Interesting fact - the names of 2 of these tribes makes up the street where we live: Elegyo Marakwet Road.) They are mostly known for their many athletes who win at athletics, especially running. More than 75% of all Kenyan athles are Kalenjin. It began with Kip Keino in 1968 (Olympic Games) and more current well know athles are Lornah Kiplagat and Paul Tergat. Also the previous President Daniel arap Moi, and Vice President candidate Ruto are Kalenijn.
Borana,
Less than 0.1 % of the Kenyan population. They live mainly in the north around Isiolo and Marsabit, related to the Oromo from Ethiopie. (The tribe that Matthew probably comes from). Shepherds who have now mostly traded their mud huts for stone houses and have settled in one place.
Kisii,
Around 7% of the population. They live around the town of Kisii, well known for their soapstone carvings and creations. They also farm a lot of coffee, tea and vegetables.
Samburu,
Form about 0.5% of the population. They are related to the Maasai with whom they share the Maasai language. They now live mostly in the north in the vicinity of the game park of the same name, north of Mount Kenya. Just like the Maasai they live mainly from their cattle and in groups of around the same age. They live in small family units of 5-8 families together. Turkana,
1.5% of the population. They live at the lake of the same name in the north west and live mostly off their fish harvests. They share their language partly with the Maa of the Maasai and the Samburu and were also originally cattle farmers. But unlike the Maasai and Samburu, they have given up circumcision. They decorate their heads with mud and feathers and have tattoos.
El Molo,
They live in the north west by Loyangalani around Lake Turkana, living from their fish harvests but also eat hipp and crocodile if necessary. They are the smallest tribe in Africa with 500 people or less. They are related to the Rendille (0.1%) and live just as their ancestors by farming camels and goats.
Swahili,
(0.6% of the population) are seen more as a "cultural tribe/ethnic group" than a tribe which shares biological links. These include Pate, Mvita, Amu, Bajun, Vumba and Ozi. The language, Kiswahili, (usually just called Swahili) was developed as a means of communication between the Africans, Arabians, Persians and later the Portugese. Most of the Swahili people live on the coast in towns such as Mombasa, Malindi and Lamu and also on Zanzibar.
There are also a lot of tribes I haven't mentioned, such as: the Taita, Gabbra, Mijikenda, Kuria, Embu, Tharaka, Mbere, Taveta, Pokomo, Digo, Giriama, Duruma, Iteso, Njemps, Sabaot, Terik, Galla, Boni, Orma, Somali en Sakuye and probably lots more I haven't mentioned.
There are of course also a lot of people here from Asian backgrounds, Arabian and European too. It is quite remarkable really how these people live most of the time in peace despite their differences in background, habits and beliefs. In a land where ownership of land can be a big (political) problem and there are often times too few means for a lot of people (25%-40% depending on the droughts) to get by. The top 10% of the population however live in riches with big cars, big compounds and houses and foreign bank accounts but are often the target of a lot of violent crime too.
