Adoptie,Matching & Wachten. Adoption,Matching & Waiting

"You may not have our eyes, or our smiles but from the very first moment you had our hearts".

**************************************************************************

Here we are then, waiting for our ‘proposal’.

But what is ‘the proposal’ and how does it work? That’s a very good question.  Here are some answers, thanks to various websites.  (Let us know if you want more information).

Proposal of a child for adoption: If the licence holder (adoption organisation) and the authorities in the child’s home country have reached the conclusion that they have made a good match, the aspiring adoption parents will officially receive the proposal of that child.  They will be given information about the age, gender and any important information about the child’s medical history.  If the proposal is accepted, more information will be provided.  Adoption parents do get some thinking time to make a decision about the proposal.

In the Netherlands, currently (June 2012) children come from 32 countries from Armenia to South Africa and there are 6 Dutch licence holders.

 The Hague Adoption Convention
The Netherlands has ratified the Hague Adoption Convention.  The aim of The Hague Adoption Convention (1993) is to protect children and their families from the risk of illegal, unjust, premature and poorly-prepared inter-country adoptions.  The countries who have ratified the Convention are required to conform to the agreements made in the Convention and to carry out a careful adoption procedure in which the interests and rights of the child are central.  The participating countries must have ensured they have taken measures to prevent working with dubious persons or organization, child traffickers and profiteers.  An adoption which is granted in a participating country is automatically and completely recognized by all the other countries in the Convention.  Currently more than 60 countries have ratified the Hague Adoption Convention.  Non-Convention countries often act in the spirit of the Convention as well though.  The (verification of) the implementation of the Convention is in assigned to the national Central Authorities of each country.  In the Netherlands, the Central Authority is the Ministry of Justice.

The licence holders act carefully when collecting and assessing the wishes and capabilities of the aspiring adoption parents.  However there is insufficient transparency into what considerations are taken into account when deciding on a matching.

Unfortunately, licence holders who work in the same countries, do not always set the same requirements.

A good story regarding matching is ‘the invisible read thread that connects all the people in the world’. In many east-Asian countries there is a story to this effect (China, Japan).  The legend tells that the gods tie an invisible red thread round the ankles of people who are destined to meet or help each other.  The magical thread can stretch in time and distance and become confused but will never break.

We definitely believe that our meeting with Matthew Kebede was destined and from the moment we first saw him in Addis Ababa, we were his parents.
As this quote says :
‘You may not have our eyes, or our smiles but from the very first moment you had our hearts’.

I realise more and more that I need him just as much as he needs me, to lear, to see and to experience.  The candour, authenticity and sincerity of the emotions of our child are extremely valuable. His sincere sadness, sometimes anger and even outrage and of course his immense joy and pleasure in everything confirms to us time and time again that he is allowing us to be there for him and he is there for us.

Mak probably doesn’t have any idea yet what is going to happen to him/her.  (Mak is the ‘working name’  for our second child J).
The first time that we will be together as a brand new family of four: mom, dad and a big brother and that family will stay with him/her 'forever'.
The long time we will spend in Kenya together to get to know each other and to bond and to show him/her that we are going to stay in his/her life forever, unconditionally, will be irreplaceable.

OK fine, that is later, this is now.

Do you remember, when you were little, birthdays, Christmas, holidays – moments that you looked forward to, can you remember?
The excitement, not being able to (or wanting to) sleep, being totally ‘hyper’, so full of tension that you couldn’t wait till that moment was there?
That’s how we feel at the moment (Matthew for sure)… and sometimes that’s nice but more often it’s difficult.
We’ve waited 6 years and (almost) 6 weeks but that entire period is nothing compared to this final waiting period.
That’s why it’s really nice for us that so many people feel for us and follow our story, but I promise with hand on heart that when there’s news, you’ll read it here!

And New Video, Bruce with "waitin'"  , just like we are, for a 'sunnier' day ;-)

"Peter's Points" - "Peter's Puntjes" #3 (Moederdag)

Compassie

Hier volgen wat voorbeelden;

Compassion

There is more than one meaning to compassion.  Sometimes it mean sympathy, an emotional connection to someone else's unhappy or difficult situation. But compassion is more than that.  It isn't limited to to a connection to someone else's misery. Then compassion only has an ethical meaning, and alludes to a morally desirable or necessary connection that is based on helping the other.  In that respect compassion is like taking unconditional care of someone need, a selflessness.

But compassion is also allied to empathy: the ability to feel someone else's emotions.  These could be either negative or positive emotions. In this respect, compassion is therefore not limited to sympathising with pain and sadness but just as much with joy.

What in any case is good, is to share that there are a lot (lots and lots!) of people who sympathise and are connected with us, and tell us this, say something about our adoption journey.  And sometimes that is quite unexpected, colleagues of whom I would never expected it, gave me kind, lovely and supportive comments and that is nice.

Connecting and actually turning this into action is something really important you can do in your life, in my opinion. What form this take is (to me) less important.

A lot of (usually older) people often call Facebook, Twitter etc. anti-social media but I really do not believe that.  But if 2 people (a couple or family or friends) are sitting together but are only paying attention to their phones then I understand what people mean by anti-social!

But on the flipside there are some other examples:

A young man has an accident and is in hospital for a long time, he can't do much and can't have any visitors due to risk of infection but via Facebook he gets almost 1000 messages in a week!

A baby is born and within 12 hours there are already 100 good wish messages.

A young woman dies during the London marathon that she was running for charity, and hundreds of thousands of pounds pour in via the website, for the charity.

Or consider the Arabic revolutions where Twitter played an important role.

Matthew has a small advantage in all of this :-)

Jane write letters (on actual paper in an envelope with a stamp on it) and uses the phone to stay in touch, and cannot be found on the Internet, though she has recently started using SMS.  (Of course Jane uses Internet and e-mail all day at work)

Peter, trying to stay hip, can be found on Hyves, Facebook and Twitter. So you can see we use all kinds of communication in our family, even having frequent 'live'  conversations with each other in person :-)

So by showing your compassion and connection to others, you realise that you are not alone in the world but that we we have a (moral and ethical) responsibility and that this isn't all down to the government.  (Even, in my opinion, it is to be expected that the government supports the weak in their own society as well as all over the world).

How you do that is totally down to you.
Do you want to do volunteer work abroad?
Do you want to work for a foundation or charity in your own country?
Do you want to do sponsored activities to raise money?
Do you want to donate?

Or maybe some or all of the above!
You can think of many ways to contribute (other than by paying tax) to your community, society and the world. But do something for someone else, because it will make you feel better, more satisfied with yourself and your life.  It is proven that giving, does you good.  And you are doing good for someone else.

There are different charities and ways that I have been impressed by normal people doing (sometimes extraordinary) good things for others.

Here are some examples:

The film of the book by Jodi Picoult 'My Sister's Keeper' about a girl with cancer - an appropriate charity is http://www.kika.nl - supporting children with cancer
In the Netherlands there are forceful posters and a documentary about the disease ALS, see: Stichting-ALS.nl  or look at the link to Lou Gehrig's (disease)

Of course I don't want to forget http://www.happyrockcenter.com, an orphanage but so much more for the people in Likoni-Mombassa and Kinango - Kenyan with a Dutch tint.

Also the Albert Schweitzer foundation does very good work in Africa, see: http://www.nasf.nl/

But a visit to an elderly relative or a neighbour in the street or sending a card to someone who is sick are all ways to show our compassion and caring of our fellow man., Personal
Like I said earlier Connecting and being involved and transferring this into action is important in one's life acoording to me.

So, if we are being thoughtful anyway, ... Mother's day (Mothering Sunday)

Especially today let us also think of the ' other side' of this day.
Off course this is a great day if you have just become a mother, or are expecting.
But for many it is also a day of remembrance thinking of the mother that is not with them anymore.
Or that mom is still with them but the mind and/or body is giving up the fight.
There are also children who do not have contact (anymore) with their (birth) mothers and
even those who never knew their parents.
And mothers who have to make terrible choice everyday, which child to feed, and which not ?

Enjoy this day, and enjoy being a father and Mother !

Kenia, eindelijk goed nieuws! Kenya finally good news!

Eindelijk goed nieuws vanuit Kenia!        (English version below)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally good news from Kenya!!

The Kenyan Adoption Committee has accepted our adoption application!
That means an important step has been taken after collection and sending all those documents over several months and after all that waiting, this is a definitive moment, we are definitely going to Kenya!

Via the CWSK (Child Welfare Society of Kenya), the local licence holder and WK (Wereldkinderen or 'World Children') we will get a 'proposal: a child will be assigned to us with a background file - name, photo(s) and other medical and background information.  We hope this will happen in June.

The proposal goes first to WK and also has to be approved by the Ministry of Justice before it will be sent to us, after which we have to respond within a certain period.

The application we have made via WK is for a child between 24 and 48 months.

After that it can all go quite quickly, which is up to us in discussion with WK and the CWSK, and up to us when we travel to Kenya as soon as we have accepted the proposal.  So we are fairly hopeful that we will be in the plan to Nairobi at the end of June/beginning of July.  But we will see, we know better than to have high expectations.

Once we are there we will look after the child for 3 months (the foster period).  We will be visited by local representatives of the child protection services and the court.  During this foster period, several reports will be written by them about how the bonding is going etc.

After that a local lawyer will start up an adoption process for us in the court.  There will be 3 court sittings at which both parents have to be in attendance.  The court procedures will take a minimum of 3 months and maximum of 6 months (so a total stay of 6-9 months).  There will be various parties and other people involved in and after this procedure.

(A somewhat changed procedure since our post Procedure part 1 in August
 2011)

The best thing is that we decided it was now time to tell Matthew that he is going to be a big brother at last!

Because we certainly realize that you never know how things will work out, we want to give Matthew enough time to think things over. That he can ask questions, share his feelings, and can think with us.
This is something we have been thinking about for a long time, but it feels that now was the right time.

We had bought a badge with 'Brother' on it and an empty notebook that he can draw in and write in anything and everything that comes to mind. The three of us sat around the dining table and we told him the plans and what it will mean on a practical level for all of us.

Matthew's first reaction was, 'I don't know if I want to live in Africa because there are big spiders and I'm scared of them'.  Then he gave us both and huge hug and said 'thank you, I'm so happy that my dream is coming true at last!'

Then of course, lots of enthusiastic questions about what school would be like there (he's a bit worried about that) and then, wouldn't it be great if it was a brother and there would be 3 men against mommy (thanks boys!) or it'll be great to have someone to help him play fight against daddy. The next morning his notebook was already filling up with pictures and thoughts he'd written down, like 'if I have a sister, I'm going to call her Lisa'.  (??!!!)

As a parent it's fantastic to see how enthusiastic our child can react. And you realise again what a big responsibility you have to help him understand what is going to happen in the coming months and year.  We told him that we think he'll make a great big brother whether he gets a little brother or sister! And we do really believe that; the last few months have not been easy (and there will probably certainly be more bumps in the road along the way) but Matthew's enthusiasm and now his involvement has given a whole new positive side to the story.

And now the reality: calling the family, letting work know, sorting out more at home, packing things up at home and letting various involved parties know the new status of the situation.

Peter's Puntjes .... Peter's Points #2

Hallo Allemaal,

Leuk (werk) is goed genoeg "

Hello All,

At first a word of thanks to everyone that reacts.
Thank You for reactions, following the blog, Facebook reactions & likes, Twitter Messages and people (colleagues) who talk to Jane and/or me.

Off course you can just read these posts and think about it any way you like, or not, but it is very nice to get a reaction, be it positive or critical.

At this moment. half April, no news yet about our adoption case, Unfortunately!
But as soon as we know anything we will tell you here first off course!!!

Alright than, point number #2.
Passion and the different ways of thinking about this word.

In my last post I already mentioned passion in the way of an "experience".

A short piece out of the "dictionary" : Passion is ...

Is a positive state of mind of utter satisfaction about a certain subject.
Which is typified by vitality (someone bursting with energy) dedication (feeling challenged) and
absorbed by a "positive flow".According to a scientific definition.

This and the following quotes from a while ago...
" F*ck, nice (work) is good enough."
" I hate you with a passion you can only dream of".

In part I think that passion is a fashionable word used by 'trendy' HR Managers but there is definitely a lot (everything) to be said for positivity, vitality and challenge in respect to the most important things in life,
including work.

So does that mean if you have got an ordinary job from which you can pay your bills (mortgage, rent, food, fun things , car), but you do not recognize any of the above, that you should quit your job immediately and find something else?
No, I would not see it that extreme. As Maslow said with his pyramid you need to fulfill your basic needs.
(a roof over your head and food)

But what can you do with all your passion and energy because you have the best idea since sliced bread.
And you have got more to give than your (current) job requires...
It is very important to cherish a desire, to make something, design something, think of something, create something, or invent something. That is what drives you to get the best out of yourself and makes you more creative and more resourceful.

That does not guarantee you yet that you will be prosperous or even financially succesful.
And... if something is commercial, takes of and or has market value ?

We all have good ideas and talent for something, but there is no guarantee that someone else will pay for it.
Absolutely not. They are two different things. And as already said nice is good enough.

Do what you like, Like what you do!.

You need to have a 'release' for your / "the" passion Do what your heart tells you even if you only spend a quarter of an hour a day on your real passion.
Research shows that you will feel more satisfied in your life if you are working towards a goal, even if it is only in small steps, the idea that you are working on your/'the' dream already provides a certain satisfaction.
Often we we make demands of ourselves first like:
" If I first do this, than......"
First we get a second car, than I will really start with it.
Or, yes, if our second child has grown up than I will have (make) time for this project.
If we have saved enough money and the children have all left, than we will go and travel!

But time if finite, and that also goes for our time on our planet earth.
(whatever you may believe, or think that you know ;-)
So let us make certain that we spend a part of our day, our week on something that gives us energy, what challenges us, something that will takes us closer to reaching and achieving our dream!

"Peter's Points" - "Peter's Puntjes" #1

No sense in being pessimistic. It wouldn't work anyway.

(copy right Life is Good)

see:  http://www.lifeisgood.com/

I have been thinking for a while now about a new post, but it was a bit hard to organize my thoughts and write it into something that makes sense and can be read on screen in the right way!

Generally speaking I'am quite an opinionated person, there is not much that I do not have an
opinion about :-)

But I do not think that my opinion(s) are always right and I definitely do not want to push my ideas to other people or be viewed as overly moralistic.

So there we are after a long intro...
What's is my point as it says in the title ?
(the idea is that I will try and make a couple of my points into a blog post in the coming weeks)

My point is that a little bit of hope, a little bit of positivity can go a long way!

What helps for me is to have a positive influence, something that "gives positiveness" be it a good book, music, or a religion.

Something that shares a message with hope, belief and will help to see a way through problems when one is 'down' with all the troubles we sometimes have to get through in life.

And for me personally it does not matter so much directly where you get your beliefs or your positive vibe from.

May it be that you are a Christian, a Muslim, a Buddhist, a Humanist or do you just pick & mix and have you made up your own "belief system" (that is also why we have the freedom of religion)

Most of the time I am happy with my beliefs, I do not feel that I need to go out and share it with everybody all the time, I am not ashamed of it and I do not feel I need to defend it constantly either.

I do believe though that everybody believes in  something, I can not really deal with people who say:
" I do not believe in anything" ...

What I mean is this; certainly You believe in something ?
In yourself
In love
In your children
In your partner
In politics
In the end of the world ?
In money
In power
In a (any) religion
In doing the best you can ?
In life itself ?

If the answer is no to all these things it would be my belief, that you need therapy, at least that is if you believe in that!

I believe that it is again good time of the year to think about things, take a step back and take some time for ourselves:

What is going on, at work,at our education, at home, in our relationship, in our minds...
Is there enough positiveness in our daily life ?
Do we get energy from the things we do ?

A moment a day or once a week can help to balance yourself.
May it be in a church, a temple, a mosque, or just in one's own private space at home.
To (re) focus it helps to think about what you believe in.

I do not think that I am in any way perfect in this yet! My opinions can get in the way, I can be too critical, but I hope I am not downright negative ...

On the television there was a great show in the Netherlands called 'The Passion', the last days of Jesus, played by actors, with pop music, and a public outside in Rotterdam last Thursday evening.
I understand that it is not everybody's cup of tea (blasphemous, too common, no respect, bad music etc. were a few comments)

But for me it was a nice television program that showed people doing their best to share a bit of 'passion' (some of the actors, participants, the public) that they felt about either the bible story, the song they sang or their own story.

So I included a clip in which Danny de Munk sings "To make you feel my love" (in Dutch) recently known from Adele, or Billy Joel maybe but originally a Bob Dylan song.

I have also added a Tag Cloud and a QR code (just playing around) Let me know What you think ! (or believe)

------ NL-----

In jezelf
In de liefde
In je kinderen
In je partner
In (de) politiek
In het einde van de wereld ?
In geld
In macht

Op televisie was vorige week "the Passion"  in Rotterdam.

(of gelooft)

Woorden 2, .... Words part 2 ...(vervolg, continuation from 10-03)

(punt)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As said the last time, some more words.
This time:

Nature versus Nurture (and further down Health & Worries)
(these words and some thoughts about things directly from me)

There are people, and certainly also parents, who think that adoption is extremely special.
For them it is nearly a calling, they were "chosen",so to speak.
With us it is slightly simpler. We just wanted a family.
This wish for a child could not be fulfilled naturally, so than the question came do we want an adoptive child ? Yes!
A very egocentric story, nothing special, easy enough...

At first this is true (the above sentence) but nowadays I think we are slightly more idealistic about our adoption plans than at first.
Still we do have the wish for another child, make our family complete with a brother or sister for Matthew.
What helps once in a while (is my experience) that you can put on a naieve, idealistic vieuw when it is needed...
With the faith & trust that we really "need to do this" and that is is "worth all" of this.

Is it not important than that the RISON line continues ?
No, not really as such. We do have a nice name with quite a history (which we know because of my sister) and it is special that this name now gets an African "colour" is what I would call it.
A "family member" who has mapped our whole family as a visible story online, liked this too and added us with our child to the Family Tree.

The Discussion about nature v. nurture interests us.Among others because of the documentarie "Child of our Time" by doctor Robert Winston.A serie that has started in 2000 during which a group of children is followed throughout their lives up to when they are grown up in 2020.

On the outside our son does not have any resemblance to us...
But that for us does not really matter, It is a beatifull boy with a very expressive face and he was totally complete when he was born :-)
What is nice to see that sometime he seems to 'copy' things of us. (without him being aware?)
That ocassionally we say that is something that he has got from the 1 of us...

Like there is:
- Liking the warmth & being cosy. What he did get from his mother!
So a preference for warm over cold (weather etc.) together underneath a blanket, a hot cup of tea and so on.
- He likes to be outside and play outside, playing football, running, sports.
Maybe not as visible now, bur something I do recognize from my younger years!
- But also quiet things like: Reading and watching films.
Espescially reading has been a wish that he longed for, for a long time!

Off course it is not clear for us what was already "there" and what did we "add" but is this so important ?

With adoption one has the 'triangle' of birthparents + adoptive child + adoptive parents.
Together you are adoption, that is a previously unknown man & woman take permanent care for a child which is not theirs by birth.
And if everything is going allright than after a while this child is their own child.Nearly, but not totally because you have to keep that birthmother (and father)'alive' because they do exist.
(in reality, or in memories)

Next

Health and Worries

You have to (is my experience)as a 'fresh' (adoptive)parent be careful that you are not "looking for possible problems."
I can still remember very well our first nights that Matthew was with us (ans also back in NL)
I kept listening if he was breathing 'right' and kept looking if he was totally okay.
(as if I could personally force it with my will & attention)
The same happened with every bump on his head..(sometimes with good reason)but also when we were 'really' going to bed, and I would sneak out to have a quick look.(you never know)

Generally one has to be very patient as a parent of a(n) (adoptive)child.
Nowadays it seems that every single child has to have 'something', What results in unaskes for advice from the baby centre and/or school. (everyone needs to fit in a box, it seems)
If you talk to other parents or family the truth is usually that most things are quite normal and will disappear of their own accord eventually!
Even if sometimes there are signs for a real problem, I also believe:
A very active boy (or girl) is sometimes just that, very active.(full stop)

Health is sometimes a difficult subject (espescially with a younger child I think).
Allthough we had Matthew completely examined in a Dutch hospital and we have documentation of all this innoculations etc. of the time 'before us' sometimes there is doubt and worry.
A good GP who knows you and your family (and the adoption story) is a good person to have around.
(and in our case to qualified nurses who are straight forward and can and will answer a lot of questions)

Regulary there seems to be the opinion about adoptive children that they are to be pitied & fragile, they are all discriminated and are always looking for their blood relatives.

Children are fragile that much is true.
But is is not necessarily so that an adoptive child is more 'damaged' by events in it's life and more vulnerable than a child from divorced parents, or a single parent after a death in the family etc. One can think of a hundred different situations that will have an influence on children while they are growing up.
And discrimination exists, that is the truth. But if you can talk open & honest and can describe differences without prejudice this does not always have to have consequences.
The "always looking for blood relatives" part is something we can not say a lot about right now.
We believe that is important that there is space and opportunity to discuss heritage and to answer any questions always honestly. (or as much as possible, given the age of your child)
Every adoptive child has a backpack with a past in it, as parents you are responsible for this, when what will come out of this backpack and how to discuss it.
A serious responsibility that can have consequences.

Help your child on it's way in life, with enough love & support, without any extreme 'claims' or having unreasonable expectations.
An independent, self-conscious child that can make his/her own choices as a young adult and with enough confidence to enter the future that is my goal.
( this is my conviction now, in about 15 years i will be able to tell you how it has worked out)

Is that not difficult ?
Yes, sometimes it is, growing up is letting go and sometimes that is hard.

Hopefully this is also a good read and no one has the feeling that I am a know it all, I also feel that I am still growing up and have to & can learn a lot.
But I do like it and being a parent is something I do with love!.
