Na een korte pauze, vanwege computerproblemen en een gezellig bezoek van Ruth!
Hebben we nu alles geupdate, de Tijdslijn, het Blog Overzicht en de Nairobi aanbevelingen.
Hallo Allemaal,
In augustus vorig jaar had ik al wat geschreven over onze 2de adoptieprocedure die nu natuurlijk,
"live" plaatsvind in Kenya. En we zitten nu dus midden in de procedure.
We hebben ons eerste "huisbezoek" gehad van de maatschappelijk werkster (J.) van CWSK (Child Welfare Society of Kenya) die samen kwam met P. van Grace Children's Center, het kindertehuis.
En we hebben het 2de bezoek aan het CWSK kantoor ook gehad.Met ons viertjes gingen we daar op bezoek.
In plaats van J. onze contactpersoon vanaf aankomst werden we voorgesteld aan P. die blijkbaar ook het rapport gaat schrijven voor de rechtbank.Het was een kort gesprek waarbij zij, naar ik meen, maar 3 vragen heeft gesteld, binnen 1 uur stonden we weer buiten.
J.,(of P) onze contactpersoon zal dus 3 keer contact met ons hebben, nu wij de pleegouders zijn van Kieran gedurende 3 maanden; in principe is dat september, oktober en november, waarna ze een rapport over ons schrijft.
1ste bezoek Thuis (half september)
2de bezoek Kantoor CWSK (begin oktober)
3de bezoek Thuis (?) met de gehele familie, waarna het rapport volgt en we op weg gaan naar de volgende stap...
Nu moeten we een advocaat in dienst nemen die ons vertegenwoordigd bij de 3 hoorzittingen in het Hogere Gerechtshof waarbij wij als ouders, beide en Kieran aanwezig moeten zijn.
(en zo hebben we gehoord het ook goed is dat Matthew erbij is)
En, jawel ook deze stap hebben we gezet.We hebben meneer O.O. gesproken en hem in dienst genomen voor onze procedure.(contact gegevens van de advocaat per email op te vragen bij ons)
Hij heeft ons veel verteld en duidelijk gemaakt over de procedure.Hij heeft ons andere in contact gebracht met een 'Guardian ad Litem' die we nog moeten gaan spreken.
Ook vertelde hij een A5 familie foto nodig te hebben voor het dossier.(al die witte mensen zien er ook allemaal hetzelfde uit)
Alles wat hij doet is erop gericht dat we de 1ste rechtbank hoorzitting zo snel mogelijk na 25 november hebben (einde pleegzorg periode) en nog voor de kerstvakantie vanaf 21 december.
Een Guardian ad litem (vriend van het kind) moet benoemd worden door het Nationaal Adoptie Committee om op te komen voor de (onafhankelijke) belangen van het kind.
Na de 1ste rechtzaak hebben we afspraken met het Ministerie, afdeling kinder welzijn zodat hun ook een rapport kunnen schrijven over onze familie.
Als alles naar wens verloopt en de adoptie uitspraak gedaan is door de rechter dan moet het CWSK dit binnen een week doorgeven aan Wereldkinderen.
Dan komt er een adoptie certificaat door de klerk die verantwoordelijk is voor de Geboorten & Overlijdens registraties. Dit vervangt een geboorteakte, die Kieran niet heeft, en daarmee kunnen we straks een paspoort voor hem aanvragen.
Met een pak papieren:
- Adoption Order, and - en (Adoptie uitspraak) Adoption Certificate.
- Clearance letter from Kenyan Department of Children's Services-Ministry of Home Affairs.
(Brief die aangeeft dat het kind het land mag verlaten)
- Travel document(s) issued by Immingration Department Kenya.(dus nog een brief)
- Visa van de Dutch Embassy in Kenya in Kieran's paspoort. (Visum uitgegeven door de NL ambassade)
Als het goed is zal CWSK - WK en onze advocaat ons hierbij begleiden om alle documenten te verzamelen, verkrijgen.
Na de adoptie moeten we de update rapporten gaan schrijven.
Elke 3 maanden voor 2 jaar (dus tot tot circa 7 jaar oud in ons geval) na de adoptie uitspraak.
Dan jaarlijks voor 3 jaar, of wel bij ons, tot 10 jaar oud.
Oh, en we,Kieran, mijn zus Wilma en ikzelf gingen naar Karen Surgery voor een controle.
We hadden wat vragen en Kieran was hier al eerder geweest voor zijn medisch dossier.
Alles is goed en Kieran groeit goed en ziet er goed uit volgens de Nederlandse dokter.
In de titel kun je zien dat dit deel 2 van 4 zal zijn, teminste dat is onze verwachting!
Deel 3 zal gaan over de Rechtbankprocedures en het einde van de fosterperiode.
Deel 4 zal terugkijkend zijn naar de totale procedure en hoe wij die beleefd hebben.

We have now updated the timeline and summary & also the Nairobi recommendations.
Hello everyone,
In August last year I started this blog about our second adoption procedure, which is now happening 'live' in kenya. And we are now halfway through the procedure.
We've had our first 'home visit' from the social worker (J.) from CWSK (Child Welfare Society of Kenya) who came together with P. from Grace Center, the children's home.
And we also had the 2nd visit to the CWSK office.With the four of us we went to see them there.
Instead of J. our contact since we arrived in Kenya, we were introduced to P. who also seems to write the report for the court.It was a short conversation really during which she only asked 3 questions, as far as I can remember, within the hour we were outside again.
J.,(or P) our contact person, will have official contact with us 3 times now that we are Kieran's foster parents for 3 months; in principle that is September, October and November, after which she will write a report about us.
1st visit at home (mid-September)
2nd visit at the CWSK office (early October)
3rd visit at home (?) with the whole family, after which the report will follow and we will be on our way to the next step...
Now we need to hire a lawyer who will represent us in the 3 court hearings at the High Court, during which both of us as parents and Kieran, need to be present. (and probably Matthew too, as a family)
And yes, we also have done this.We had a meeting with mister O.O. en hired him to represent us during our procedure.(contact details of the lawyer can be asked by email from us)
He has told us a lot and clarified the procedure.He has set up a meeting with a possible 'Guardian ad Litem' who we still have to go and meet.
He also told us that he needed an A5 family photo for the file.
Everything he does is aimed on having the first court hearing as soon as possible after the 25th of november (end of the Foster Period) and before the 21st december court recess.
A Guardian ad litem (friend of the child) has to be appointed by the National Adoption Committee to (independently) represent the child's interests.
After the 1st court case we will have meetings with the Ministery, Children's Department.
Who will also meet with us and write another report about our family.
If everything goes to plan and after 6-9 months, and the adoption decision is read out by the judge
and signed, then CWSK has to give this to Wereldkinderen (our adoption agency in the Netherlands) within a week.
Then the clerk of the court will create the Adoption Certificate, this person is responsible for registering births and deaths.This document replaces the birth certificate which Kieran does not have, and with that we can then apply for a passport for him.
A mountain of paperwork to collect:
- Adoption Order, and (Adoption Decision), Adoption Certificate.
- Clearance letter from Kenyan Department of Children's Services-Ministry of Home Affairs.
(Letter that confirms the child can leave the country)
- Travel document(s) issued by Immingration Department Kenya.(Another letter)
- Visa from the Dutch Embassy in Kenya in Kieran's new passport
Hopefully CWSK, WK and our lawyer will guide us in the collection of all these documents.
After the adoption is final in Kenya, we have to write 'update reports'; every 3 months for 2 years (so till Kieran is about 7 years old) ) And than yearly till he is 10 years old.
Oh, and we,Kieran, my sister Wilma and myself went to Karen Surgery for a check up.
All is well and Kieran is growing well and looks good according to the Dutch doctor.
In the title you can see that this is part 2 of 4, at least that is our expectation!
Part 3 will be about the Court Procedures and the end of the foster period.
Part 4 will be looking back at the total procedure and how we experienced it.

The Human Development Index is a statistic composed of life expectancy, education, and income to rank countries into four layers of human development from low to Very High. A HDI development below 0.5 is considered low development. All 22 countries in this category are located in Africa.
The Global Hunger Index is statistical tool updated once a year by the international food policy research institute, 0 is no hunger and 100 is the worst. Moderate hunger is any value between 10-19.9; values between 20-29.9 are alarming. The statistics used are the % of undernourished people, underweight children under 5 years of age and mortality rate for the same group.*

Population near 17 mil. 63 mil. 316 mil.

Although it can be boring and there is far more to "the story" than de figures above I did think that it was a good day to share the above.
Most of us do not have think much about our "daily bread" we just go down to the supermarket and buy whatever we want and sometimes need..
Maybe its a good time to have a think about what we buy and do not need, but throw away...
(12 % of the food is thrown away; is a general estimate that is worked with in the Netherlands)
Yes, of course we also have to think about it ourselves. It does seem more real somehow in a country where poverty is not a statistic, or not having a piece of meat for a day to save on the weekly budget,
but where children go hungry to sleep daily where it is a daily fact of life.

* Mortality Rate Children
The number of children that dies before they are 5 years old has decreased sinificantly.
But worldwide the number is still a staggering 19.000 per day.
In 1990 there were 12 million young children who died, in 2011 it decreased to 6.9 milion Unicef reported. The decrease is mainly because of the improved approach to diseases like:
polio, measles and malaria.Now the deadliest diseases for children are pneumonia and diarrhoea.
Four fifths of the deaths happen in sub-Saharan Africa and in South-Asia. More than 50% of the deaths by pneumoni and diarrhoea are in Congo, India, Nigeria or Pakistan.

Om landen in 4 lagen in te delen van menselijke ontwikkeling van Laag tot Erg Hoog.
Een Index hieronder van 0.5 hieronder wordt gezien als erg laag,
Alle 22 landen in deze categorie liggen in Afrika.

Gemiddelde honger is een waarde tussen 10-19.9. Als de waarde tussen 20-29.9 valt is het alarmerend. De statistieken die gebruikt worden zijn de volgende: het % van ondervoede mensen, kinderen jonger dan 5 jaar die onder gewicht zijn en het sterfte cijfer * van dezelfde groep.

Hoewel het bovenstaande saai kan zijn en er veel meer "verhaal is" dan de cijfers hier boven dacht ik dat het goed was om juist vandaag bovenstaande te delen.
Velen van ons hoeven niet zoveel na te denken over ons "dagelijks brood" we gaan naar de supermarkt en we kopen wat we willen en soms wat we nodig hebben..
Misschien is het een goede tijd om eens na te denken over wat we kopen en niet nodig hebben, maar
weg gooien...
( 12 % van het voedsel wordt gemiddeld weg gegooit in een Nederlands huishouden)
Ja, natuurlijk is het ook een bewustwording voor mij zelf en ons zelf. Het is een duidelijker gegeven in een land waar armoede niet een statistiek is maar de dagelijkse werkelijkheid, waar geen stukje vlees eten voor 1 dag per week om geld te besparen op het budget niet de werkelijkheid is,
maar waar kinderen dagelijks met honger naar bed gaan en dit een dagelijks feit is van hun leven.

In 1990 stierven er nog ongeveer 12 miljoen jonge kinderen, in 2011 was dat afgenomen tot 6.9 miljoen meldt Unicef. De daling komt vooral door de betere aanpak van ziektes als:
polio, mazelen, en malaria. Nu zijn de dodelijkste ziektes bij kinderen longontsteking en diarree.
Viervijfde van de sterfgevallen vindt plaats onder de Sahara in Afrika en in Zuid-Azie. Ruim de helft van de sterfte door longonsteking en diarree is in Congo, India, Nigeria of Pakistan.

Netherlands School Society - The Dutch School
So today a different post about Matthew's school, first in Dutch and further down in English.
Dus vandaag weer eens een ander bericht ditmaal over Matthew zijn school.
Matthew gaat vanaf 21 Augutsus naar de Nederlandse School of wel de Netherlands School Society (NSS) in Nairobi.
Trouwens even een opmerking tussendoor de vorige berichten waren niet bedoeld om te "zeuren" of klagen! Maar meer om aan te geven dat we nog wel degelijk aan iedereen aan het thuisfront denken.
(Zowel in Nederland als Engeland als overal waar vrienden en kennissen en lezers zich op dees aardbol bevinden). En dat we jullie missen en blij zijn met alle reacties op de blog, berichten, berichtjes, mailtjes enzovoort. Soms gaat de tijd langzaam en zijn dingen ook wel eens even minder leuk, maar ook dat hoort bij het leven.
Maar goed, vandaag was een fantastische dag. Wij mannen hebben een hele leuke ochtend gehad op school. Het was de afsluiting van het 1ste blok van IPC thema (International Primary Curriculum) de Olympische Spelen en de juffen en kinderen hadden er een heel spektakel van gemaakt!

Het was een complete Olympische dag alles erop en eraan een openingsceremonie, het onsteken van de Olympische vlam, het uitspreken van de eed (met dank aan Matthew, "we gaan ons aan de spelregels houden, dat is mijn belofte", en nee dat sloeg niet specifiek op hem ;-)
Na een korte uitleg en natuurlijk de presentatie van de "teams" of wel de klassen in verschillende kleuren van de Olympische Ringen konden we van start gaan met de sporten.
Er waren verschillende sporten (onderdelen, Ja het was net een sportdag) per groep dan wel klas en voor Matthew, die in de gemengde groep 4,5,6 zit was dat:
- Estafette loop om de vlam door te geven (een stok) van pion naar pion.
- Hoogspringen vanaf 50 cm tot en met 90 centimeter
- En trefbal
De opkomst van de ouders was best aardig, maar het aantal sportieve ouders, wat in sportkleding was gekomen en actief meedeed (jawel, zoals de schrijver zelf) viel tegen.Wij waren met een wisselend groepje van 5 bij 4, 5, 6. Wisselend want sommige ouders hebben meerdere kinderen op school.
Kieran nam ook deel "als mijn schaduw" samen rennen ging prima, het hoog springen vond iedereen grappig.
1 van de ouders (natuurlijk een Engelsman) deed het erg grappig (denk Monty Python) en men vond mijn benadering ook leuk, ik nam een aanloop, pakte Kieran onder zijn schouders en "gooide" (zette) hem over de stok waarna ik er zelf over heen stapte-dan wel sprong bij de 90 cm.
Natuurlijk was er ook tijd voor een pauze met ons allemaal gezelig zittend op de trappen, waarbij je goed kan zijn hoe internationaal de groep kinderen is.

Er is een wereldkaart bij de ingang van de lokalen waarop alle namen staan van de kinderen en waar ze geboren zijn.Van Nederland tot Zuid-Afrika en alles daar tussen in Europa & Afrika, Zuid-Amerika en Azie.
Natuurlijk was er ook een medaille ceremonie en een afsluitingsceremonie,
waarbij de olympische vlam ceremonieel uitgeblazen werd!.
Natuurlijk was het ook hier in Oktober tijd voor de Kinderboekenweek!
Een belangrijke gebeurtenis voor mij als bibliotheek vader, en erg leuk en goed om alle kinderen aan het lezen te krijgen.Zoals het hoort bij 'onze' Nederlandse School werd er goed gebruik gemaakt van het thema "Hallo Wereld" met veel aandacht voor de verschillende landen waar iedereen vandaan komt en er wordt gelezen in het Nederlands en in het Engels.
( De school is op weg om uiteindelijk een Internationale School te worden, zelfstandig op een eigen terrein met eigen voorzieningen.Deze worden nu 'geleend' van de eigenaar de Zweedse School)

Al met al een leuke en leerzame dag met sport & spel en de mogelijkheid om te bekijken wat de kinderen doen in de klas.Ben nu al benieuwd hoe het zal gaan met Kieran in groep 1 met juf Danielle & Agnes.Matthew begint in ieder geval zijn weg te vinden met de juffen Kim & Linda.
Ook wordt er al gespeeld met Ben (en Liam) en Abel (en Pelle en Sara) nu nog een afspraak met Joyce en het begin is er van de Keniaanse vriendjes!
Natuurlijk de groeten aan de vriendjes van de Wegwijzer, Adam, Dennis, Martim, Rivaldi en alle anderen en de neven in Nederland & Engeland + een hele prettige Voorjaars (of Herfstvakantie) allemaal!

By the way, I just want to make a comment here about my previous post, it wasn't meant to be a whiney or complaining message. But more to show that we still think about everyone back home (both in The Netherlands and England but also everywhere else on the planet where we have friends, colleagues and readers). To let you kow that we miss you and are pleased with all the reactions on the blog, messages, e-mails and so on. Sometimes time goes by slowly and things aren't as much fun, but that's part of life.
Anyway, today was a fantastic day. We boys had a great morning at school. It was the end of the first part of the IPC (International Primary Curriculum) with the theme 'The Olympic Games' and the teachers and children made a real special event of it.

It was a complete mini-Olympics with everything including an opening ceremony, the lighting of the Olympic flame, taking the oath (which Matthew led for the whole school: " we will play by the rules, that is our promise".
After a short explanation and of course the presentation of the 'teams' or classes wearing the different colours of the Olympic Rings, we could make a start on the sports.
There were different sports (or parts of sports, it was just like a sports day) per group or class and for Matthew's group, classes 4, 5 and 6 these were: - running a relay passing the torch on (just a stick) from point to point - high jump from 50 to 90 cm - a ball game
A fair few parents came, but the number of sporty parents who actually came in sports clothing and took part was a bit disappointing (and yes, I did take part). We were a group of 5 parents of the children in groups 4, 5 and 6. Some parents have more than one child at school so had to switch groups from time to time.
Kieran also took part as 'my shadow' - running was fine, but the high jump made everyone laugh.
One of the parents (of course an Englishman) did it really funny (his approach was 'Monty Python'!) and people seemed to like my approach funny too; I took a run up, picked up Kieran under his shoulders, threw him over the high jump (onto a thick mat of course) and jumped or stepped over it behind him.
Of course there was time for a break too when we all sat on the steps, if you look at the photo below you can see just how international the group of children is.

At the entrance to the classrooms is a large world map on which all the children have put pins with their names where they were born. There are pins from The Netherlands to South Africa, and everywhere in between in Europe, South America and Asia.
Of course there was also a medal ceremony for the winners and the Olympic flame was blown out.
Of course in October 'children's book week' also took place. An important event for me as 'library dad', and really great to get all the children reading. As you would expect in this international Dutch school, good use was made of this year's theme 'Hallo World' and a lot of attention was paid to all the different countries where the children come from and they read in English and Dutch.
The school is on the path to becoming a fully International school, independent and on its own land with its own facilities. These are now shared with the Swedish school.

All in all it was a fun and informative day with lots of sports and games and the opportunity to look what the children have been doing in the classroom. I am already wondering how Kieran will do in Group 1 with Miss Danielle and Miss Agnes. Matthew is now starting to find his way with the teachers too, Kim and Linda. He has also been to play with Ben (and brother Liam) and Abel (and brother and sister Pelle and Sara) and now just a date with Joyce and he'll be well on the way to having a group of friends here in Kenya.

Gezocht NL dingen (& mensen)... Missing! things from home
Jawel, het is gebeurd, we missen allemaal zo onze dingen van thuis of hebben heimwee , al vind ik dat een te groot woord persoonlijk, en de tijd nog te kort daarvoor...
Voor mij gebeurde het, natuurlijk, toen ik het laatste schepje DE koffie in de machine deed en probeerde te beschrijven waarom deze koffie nou zo bijzonder was/is.
Dat in vergelijk met de Keniaanse koffie die eigenlijk toch ook gewoon goed is...
Natuurlijk begon ik met de branding, het is sterker, de smaak is anders etcetera etcetera, maar dat is het allemaal niet...
Het is het gevoel, de TV spotjes, de ervaringen, de kopjes koffie die ik als kleine jongen al met mijn moeder dronk met veel melk en suiker! Het is het idee van thuis of een thuis gevoel dat in sommige produkten nu eenmaal bij mensen doorklinkt.
Jawel lieve lezers niets menselijks is mij vreemd!
Dat is de reden dat er mensen zijn die gewoon helemaal niet op vakantie willen, of als ze al gaan eigenlijk zo snel mogelijk weer naar huis willen.
Mijn moeder was zo iemand en jullie kennen er vast ook wel 1 of meer in de omgeving ...
En nee dat zijn niet de neuroten die denken dat hun zaak - de zaak niet zal openen als ze er zelf niet zijn, dat is weer een geheel ander hoofdstuk.
Dat gevoel is, denk ik, ook de reden dat 'medelanders' caravans vol met Albert Heijn koffie en andere AH zaken, drop, chips en Calve pindakaas meeslepen naar hun vakantie adres.
Terwijl je op vakantie er toch even tussen uit zou moeten willen - niet waar? Nieuwe dingen ontdekken, zien en proeven, maar goed we hebben het allemaal wel een beetje.
Wat mis ik dan nog meer ? Stroopwafels vers van de vrijdag markt, Peter bij de Albert Heijn om een praatje mee te maken, hetzelfde met de buurmannen Johhny, Aart en Evert en Ton & Celine en buurvrouw Aja. De collega s bij IKEA, slap kletsen met Cusney en of andere vrienden, effe elkaar bellen en horen hoe het gaat met de Roodenburgs en Westerholts.
Goed, nu effe genoeg over mij, de andere familie leden..
Jane:
Keizerbroodjes en kip kerrie, borrelnootjes, lunchen met Karen, de vrijheid om in de auto te stappen en ergens naar toe te rijden.
Constante stroom en Internet voorziening.
Brieven ontvangen van de familie uit Engeland.
Matthew:
Adam, Dennis en Danisha, Jorai en familie, Martim, Noah, en natuurlijk Chanice, maar ook Aja.
En zeker buitenspelen zonder, met minder grenzen, fietsen en voetballen wanneer hij dat maar wil.
Hagelslag! (MC Donalds zegt hij net ??? maar we komen er bijna nooit).
De TV met programma's als Z@ppelin (in t weekend) maar ook de CBBC morning shows met Leon, Octonauts en Pingu op NL & Engelse TV.
Happy Kids, Jaylee, Jordy, juf Sandra en friends.
En natuurlijk zijn neefjes uit Montfoort maar ook die uit Engeland wel om "zijn nieuwe broertje te showen".

Wat natuurlijk ook meespeelt is het gevoel en dat is ook grotendeels echt zo van geen directe controle hebben over wat er gebeurt.
Dat begint ten eerste met het adoptie proces, maar ook in de kleine zaken als het assortiment van de supermarkt wat weer eens onverklaarbaar gewijzigd is, de beheerder van ons apartementen complex die zaken beloofd maar niet uitvoerd en ga zo maar door.
Een bedrijf ik niet mag vergeten te noemen is Safaricom (mobiele telefoon provider), groot en modern mooi hoofdkantoor charmante CEO (Bobby Colmore) maar er moet nog wel eea gedaan worden aan een constante service verlening en in alle lagen van het bedrijf...
Ook de willekeur van Kenyan Power het elektriciteits bedrijf is een factor die meespeelt bij ons als verwende westerse mensjes.
Hun slogan is:
"Kenyans supply the energy, We supply the power" duh, soms wel ja :-)))

Tja, Kieran is natuurlijk een verhaal apart.
We denken dat hij gedeeltelijk al bezig is met zijn rouwverblijkt uit werking-verdriet-afscheid nemen.
Dat blijkt uit het feit dat hij Mama Elizabeth erg veel noemt de laatste tijd (zijn vaste verzorgster vanaf Dag 1 in het Grace Children's Center) en de gewoonte om alle dieren in een verhaaltje de naam te geven van een vriendje vanuit het kindertehuis; "This is Obama, Steve, Greg, Brenda, etcetera... "
Nu heeft hij relatief veel aanspraak in het Swahili bij ons apartement en met oom Mike en familie afgelopen anderhalve week. Op het moement dat we vanuit Kenia wegvliegen zal het ongetwijfeld weer meer, (hele andere) emoties oproepen bij ons kleine mannetje...
Tussendoor zal ook het naar (de Nederlandse) school gaan best een mijlpaal voor hem zijn.

Wat kunnen we daar (Matthew voornamelijk) nu aan doen ?
Nou we hebben het nodige aan films meegebracht, kinder programma's zijn er niet op de Kenyaanse TV en we hebben maar een beperkt aantal zenders...
We hopen dat er nog wat meer mensen (ouders van kinderen!) willen Skypen of een mailtje sturen met een leuke foto of tekening ...
Het ultieme is natuurlijk bezoek!
We hebben de altijd leuke tantes Wilma en Ruth al gehad, maar meer mensen zijn welkom!
(Dat geldt net zo goed voor Peter die nadat Kieran in Januari 2013 naar school gaat ook wat tijd te besteden heeft...) Jullie hebben ons e-mail adres!!
Yes, it has happened, we are all missing this and that from home or are a bit homesick, although I find that a big word personally, we haven't really been here long enough for that.
For me it happened, of course (for those who know me) when I put the last scoop of Douwe Egberts coffee (that my sister Wilma brought with her for me 2 weeks ago) in the coffee machine and tried to explain why this coffee is so special .
And to compare it to the Kenyan cofee, which is actually fine too....
Of course it begins with the roasting, it's stronger, the taste is different etc., etc., but that's not all of it - it's the feeling, the TV adverts, the experiences, the cups of coffee that I drank with my mom as a small boy with lots of milk and sugar. It's the reminder of home, the feeling of home that some products just remind people of.
Yes dear readers, I'm human after all!
That is the reason that some people don't want to go on holiday, or if they go, want to go home again as quickly as possible.
My mother was like that and I am sure you all know someone like that in your circle. And no, that's not the neurotics who think that their place of work won't get by without them if they aren't there, that's a whole other story.
I think that feeling, is the reason that our country folk fill their caravans with Albert Heijn coffee and other AH products, liquorice, crisps and Calve peanut butter and take it with them on holiday.
But while you are on holiday you're supposed to be getting away from the familiar, aren't you? Discover, see and taste new things, but, I guess we all have that a bit.
What else do I miss? 'Stroopwafels' (syrup biscuits) fresh from the Friday market, Peter from Albert Heijn (supermarket) to chat with, the same with our neighbours Aja, Johhny, Aart en Evert en Ton & Celine. My colleagues at IKEA, chatting with Cusney and other friends, just giving each other a call and seeing how the Roodenburgs or Westerholts are doing.
OK, enough about me, what about the other family members?

Keizer bread rolls and chicken curry, savoury nuts, lunches with Karen and the freedom of just getting in the car and driving somewhere.
Continual electricity and Internet connection!
Sending and receiving letters from the family in England
Matthew:
Adam, Dennis and Danisha, Jorai and family Martim, Noah, and of course Chanice and Aja.
And definitely playing outside with less restrictions, cycling and playing football whenever he wants.
Hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles) and he just said MacDonalds although we hardly ever go there!
TV programmes like Z@ppelin (in the weekend) but also the CBBC morning shows met Leon, Octonauts and Pingu on the Dutch and English TV.
Happy Kids (Matthew's after-school club) - Jaylee, Jordy, miss Sandra and other friends.
And of course his cousins in Montfoort (he cries every time we Skype with them) but also his cousins in England who he wants to show off his new brother to.

Of course a big part of that is the feeling - and that is true by and large - that we don't have any control over what is happening.
That starts with the adoption process, but also in the small things like the selection of items in the supermarkt which changes inexplicably, or the manager of our apartment complex who promises things but doesn't carry them through (it took 3 weeks to change a lightbulb in the bathroom and after 6 weeks we are STILL waiting for the safe to be fixed so we can use it).
A company I mustn't forget is Safaricom (mobile network provider), a big and modern company with an impressive head office, charming CEO (Bobby Colmore), but they need to work on a consistent customer service in all layers of the company .....
Also the fickleness of Kenyan Power, the electricity company, is a factor that bothers us spoiled Westerners. Their slogan is: "Kenyans supply the energy, We supply the power" duh, well, sometimes :-)))

Those readers who are paying attention will have already noticed, what about family member number 4? Well yes, Kieran is a different story....
We think he has already gone through a large part, but is still going through, the grieving process. He has mentioned Mama Elizabeth a lot lately (his main carer from Day 1 in Grace Children's Center) and the habit he has of giving names to the people and animals in the stories we read him, using names of his friends from the children's home, "this is Obama, Steve, Greg, Brenda, etcetera... "
At the moment he has quite a lot of people to continue speaking Swahili with in our apartment building (the cleaners, guards, office staff) and more recently with his Uncle Mike and his family the past week and a half. I am sure that however settled he feels with us, the moment we leave Kenya to go home he will have a whole load of new and different emotions to deal with.
In the meantime, going to the (Dutch) school in January will be a big milestone for him (and for us).
What can we do (mainly for Matthew) to make him feel better?
Well, we brought all his familiar DVDs with us, since there are no children's programmes on Kenyan TV and we only have a limited number of channels.
We hope that some (parents?) of his school friends will Skype or send an e-mail with a photo or drawing...
The ultimate of course is that we get visitors!!
We have had the always-fun Aunties Wilma (last week) and Ruth (coming next week during half-term from school) but more people are welcome!

Lake Naivasha (en omgeving)
Hello again!
So, last Saturday we went on a day trip with Dickson, his sister Stella, Mike & Wilma, James the driver and our family. We left early to beat traffic and increase the chance of seeing wildlife as well.
On the way to the lake we stopped at the viewpoints over the Great Rift Valley and Mount Longonot (extinct volcano). Very beautiful valley underneath us, shame about the pushy shop owners, and the Kenyans found it too cold ;-)
Dus, afgelopen zaterdag gingen we een dagtripje maken met Dickson, zijn zus Stella, Mike & Wilma, James de chauffeur en onze familie. We gingen vroeg weg, om het verkeer te ontlopen en hoe vroeger hoe beter om dieren te zien.
Op weg naar het meer stopten we op bij de uitkijkpunten over de Great Rift Vallei en Mount Longonot, een oude vulkaan. Het was erg mooi onder ons, jammer van de opdringerige verkopers, en de Kenianen vonden het te koud.
Met een bootje gingen we op Lake Naivasha vanaf opstapplaats Hippo Point, en we hebben het nodige gezien!
Officieel was het een trip van een uur, maar we denken dat Mike er een goede deal van gemaakt had!
We kwamen pas na zo'n 2 uur terug bij de opstapplaat. Dus wat zagen we dan ?

Officially we had booked a trip for an hour, but it seems our Kenyan guide Mike did a good deal! When we got back it was nearer two hours.So what did we see then?
Several fish eagles, kingfishers sitting and in action (great to see these birds diving down into the water and catching their fish) several kinds of cormorants, storks and egrets, weaver birds etcetera. And yes..
hippo's !! At three places we saw them swimming playing and resting.
A bit further inland we could also see zebras and several kinds of antelope.
Back on dry land the Kenyan companions were hungry, at 10.00am, but we had left early so a Tilapia (or 2) of course with Ugali was ordered.And although at first I did not really fancy a greasy brunch it was very good!
Oh, and there are quite a few (Dutch owned / managed) flower growers around at this lake, but the water level was still good.
On we drove to the next adventure!
Since we still had enough time, the weather was nice and the mood good, we went on to Hell's Gate National Park. After a bit of a wait and paying some reasonable money (cheaper for Kenyan residents as everywhere) we went into the park through the Elsa Gate.
It is a great park, also because you can mountainbike or walk if you want and encounter wildlife.
Also it is possible to climb, and do some trekking through the gorge.And there is plenty of "innocent" wildlife like zebra, giraffe, babboons, warthogs, and several bird species.

We stopped at the entrance to the Gorge and went and had a look, Wilma decided that she did not really want to break any bones (pretty good decision as it turned out to be quite a challenge) and stayed at the starting point with Kieran. Well the views were great but there were some tricky passes, down a slippery path which was a couple of metres down, through a slit in the rocks where we just fitted and up a ladder 10 meters straight up. We must say that Matthew did exceptionally well, he climbed everything, did not moan or object and enjoyed himself! (Jane and Matthew also both did this with flip flops on!)
It is a great place to see and experience, but do come with the right footwear and the right comfortable clothes.
We enjoyed the herds of zebra and giraffe, some buffalo and just missed a zebra and a warthog family that ran in front of our car.
Only the geysers were a bit of a disappointment since they are all used by KenGen and part of an enormous industrial complex which includes 2 powerstations.
After a long journey back, 2 lanes, 1 each way and lots of heavy trucks on the road, including one involved in an accident, we arrived safely back in Nairobi.

Verschillende vis arenden, ijsvogels in zittende positie maar ook in actie ( het is fantastisch om die vogels in het water te zien duiken om hn vis te vangen) verschillende aalscholvers en ooievaars,en allerlei watervogels groot en klein.
En jawel... Nijlpaarden!!! Op drie plekken zagen we ze zwemmen, spelen en uitrusten.
Iets verder uit de kust zagen we ook zebra's en verschillende impala's en andere antilopen.
Eenmaal terug op het droge hadden de Kenianen honger om 10.00, maar we waren ook vroeg vertrokken, dus er werd een Tilapia (of 2) besteld natuurlijk met Ugali erbij.En hoewel het me in eerste instantie niet zo trok zo'n vette brunch smaakte het toch erg goed!
Oh, en er zijn verschillende ( NL eigenaar / manager) bloemen bedrijven rondom het meer, maar gelukkig is het water peil nog steeds goed. (Naar aanleiding van vragen ;-)
Dus verder naar het volgende avontuur!
Omdat we nog tijd voldoende hadden, en het weer goed was en de zin ook, gingen we verder naar Hell's Gate NP.Na een poosje wachten en overhandiging van een redelijk geld bedrag (altijd goedkoper voor Kenianen zoals overal) gingen we het park binnen via de Elsa ingang.
Het is een mooi en bijzonder park mede omdat je er kan mountainbiken en wandelen en zo het wild kan tegenkomen.Het is ook mogelijk om er te klimmen en door het ravijn te klauteren. Er is voldoende ongevaarlijk wild te zien zoals zebra's,giraffe's, bavianen, wrattenzwijnen en veel verschillende vogels.
We stopten bij de ingang van het ravijn en namen een kijkje, Wilma besloot dat ze liever geen botten ging breken (goede beslissing want het bleek een flinke uitdaging te zijn) zij bleef met Kieran bij het startpunt. Nou de uitzichten waren fantastisch maar er waren wat lastige doorgangen, een natte en gladde doorgang waar je een paar meter naar beneden moest, een smalle doorgang waar me (rugzak) maar net door konden en 10 meter omhoog een steile ladder op. We moeten zeggen dat Matthew de held van de dag was, hij klom overal op zonder probleem en zonder te zeuren en vond het leuk! (Jane en Matthew deden alles op hun slippers!)
Het is een mooi plek om te zien en te beleven maar kom wel met de juiste schoenen en de juiste goedzittende kleren.
We genoten van de kuddes zebra's en giraffes en wat buffalo's en misten maar net een zebra en later een wrattenzwijn die voor de auto langs renden.
Alleen de geisers, en warmwaterbronnen waren een teleurstellingomdat ze allemaal gebruikt worden door KenGen en onderdeel zijn van een enorm industrieel complex met 2 centrales.
Na een lange terug reis, 2 rijstroken 1 elke kant op en veel zwaar vracht verkeer op de weg, inclusief 1 vrachtwagen in een ongeluk, kwamen we weer veilig aan in Nairobi.
