Politics & Elections part 2 - Politiek & Verkiezingen deel 2

Natuurlijk moest ik dat zien! (Jane was aan het werk) Het hele program speelde zich af tussen 19.00 en middernacht s' avonds.Het begon te laat mede omdat 1 van de kanidaten de goed locatie niet kon vinden.... Alles werd uitgezonden met een zeer uitgebreide voor- en nabeschouwing die ik voor een groot deel voorbij heb laten gaan ;-)  { de wedstrijd zelf interesseert, het gepraat eromheen minder }

Uhuru Kenyatta, Kikuyu,51, TNA The National Alliance - Jubilee, Zoon van Jomo Kenyatta.

MusaliaMudavadi, Luhya,  ....

Corruptie (integritetit)  & Slecht Leiderschap aanpakken.

Nieuwe Grondwet (van 2010) volledig invoeren.

Ethnische Identiteit niet het belangrijkste laten zijn.

Ongelijkheid in welzijn , inkomen & werkeloosheid zorgt voor =>
Hoge kosten van levensonderhoud, de Situatie verbeteren.

Misdaad  &  Onveiligheid aanpakken.

Zoals iemand in de krant schrijft: " The next president is the person who gets the largest number of votes at the election, irrespective of whether he (or she ;-) comes from the bottom of a lake or the peaks of a mountain. That, I think, is democracy"

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The last post was mostly about the background to the elections, but now I want to go into more specifics about the election for a new Kenyan president.  The presidential candidates this year, their most important standpoints and the past presidents.

On 11th February there was for the first time ever in Kenya, a televised debate between the presidential candidates.  Of course I had to see that!  (Jane was working throughout most of it).  The programme took place between 7pm and midnight.  It began late partly due to one of the candidates not being able to find the location (a school in Nairobi).  Everything was televised, from the very extensive discussion before the debate to an analysis after it was finished, most of which I didn't follow.  (The game is interesting, but all the talking around it, not so).
The candidates (from left to right on the picture above):
Name, tribe, age, party and (if applicable) coalition, with some background.....

Mohammed Dida, Kenyan with a Somali background, at 39 years of ages the youngest, Alliance for Real Change in Kenya (ARK),  Moslim with 3 wives who would all go and live with him in the State House if he wins.   Comes from Wajir in the north east.  School teacher, has taught in the refugee camp Daadab and is now a student at the university, (has a Bachelor of Education, now studying for Master of Religious Studies) and part-owner of an employment agency. Originally not allowed to join the debate but was permitted after a court case, which is why he is at a different (last minute) podium.  He is the outsider, the underdog.  In the first debate he made a lot of funny remarks, very religious and honest man, not the most learned candidate which became even clearer from some of the answers he gave in the second debate.

Uhuru Kenyatta, Kikuyu, 51, TNA The National Alliance - Jubilee, son of Jomo Kenyatta.
The family is a large land owner, during the debate Kenyatta admitted to 30,000 acres but on record the family has more than 121,000 square acres and it is claimed that the family owns 50% of the fround in Kenya which seems a bit unlikely but they are certainly one of the richest families in the country.  Together with Ruto (his future Vice President), they are two of the suspects indicted by the ICC. Studied at Amherst College in the USA, political science and Economics, has been the Minister for Local Government, Trade and Finance, is currently the Deputy Prime Minister. Surrounded in controversy regarding a mistake with budgets while Minister.

James Ole Kiyiapi, Maasai, 52, RBK-  Restore and Build Kenya, Born again Christian, a civil servant (permanent secretary) who works in Education, Environment and Health in a (regionally) well-known Maasai community.  Is a Professor, has a Bachelors degree and PhD in Forestry Science in Kenya and Toronto.

Peter Kenneth, 47, his father is while and his mother is a Kikuyu, KNC - Kenyan National Congress - The Eagle Alliance.  Has a Masters in law and is a banker by profession.  He is a politician whose county Gatanga has performed the best in the past few years in all the devlopment targets set.  Is a good public speaker and has a large following among young people on social media.

MusaliaMudavadi, Luhya,  .... ,UDF - United Democratic Front - Amani coalition, is currently in the government as co-Vice President (with Kenyatta).  Has been Minister for Transport, Communication & Information, Finance and Local Government. Experienced politician who has a Bachelor of Science in Land Economics.  Is a calm man who is relaxed and knows what he is talking about.

Martha Karua, Kikuyu, 56,  NARC, former lawyer, judge and Minister of Justice who stepped down from her government post on a matter of principle.  Mother of 2 children, new grandmother, divorced.  Only female candidate.  Well spoken and took part in forming the new constitution (2010).

Raila Odinga, Luo ,68, ODM - CORD alliance, current Prime Minister, a new post created in 2008 in order to create a collaboration with ODM after the riots and crisis after the previous elections in 2007.  Has a family business in engineering, is himself an engineer.  Has been Minister for Energy, Roads, Public Works and Accommodation, is a senior politician who has set up several parties.

Paul Muite, Kikuyu, 68, Safina party, Bachelor of Law, former chairman of the Law Society of Kenya, a progressive clun which has done a lot for the country.  Originally not allowed to take part in the debate but after a court case was permitted, which is why he is at a different (last minute) podium.

At this time, everyone is in agreement that it is a 2-horse race between Uhuru Kenyatta of Jubilee and Raila Odinga of Cord with Musalia Mudavadi of the Amani Coalition as a potential outsider.

Subjects and points on the agenda:
Tackling corruption (integrity) and bad leadership

Implementing the new constitution (2010)

Ensuring that ethnic identity is not the most important thing that identifies you

Inequalities in welfare, income and (un)employment mean high costs of living; this must be improved

Tackling crime and questions of safety

Yesterday, Monday 25th February, a week before the elections, the second part of the debate took place which was televised live on all Kenyan TV and radio stations, despite the many powercuts in Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret. (We had "powersurges", the light kept flickering).

Kenya has it's own office that takes continual polls - Ipsos Synovate - who says that the 2 main candidates are nck and neck.  There are some strange matters going on where various high-ranking civil servants are being accused of bias; it is claimed that voters are being fed alcohol to influence their decisions and there are claims (already) of intimidation. And the highest judge in the land,  Chief Justice Willy Muthinga, was not allowed to leave the country and received a threatening letter in the same week.

If the debates reflect the truth, then all candidates will respect the outcome of the elections this time.  Just as someone wrote in the paper, "The next president is the person who gets the largest number of votes at the election, irrespective of whether he (or she ;-) comes from the bottom of a lake or the peaks of a mountain. That, I think, is democracy"

And that is my opinion too, I think:
- whoever gets the most votes, is the winner
- this is true of the top 3 politicians
- it is 'old wine in new bottles' - very little will change, at least that's how it seems now....
- If Jubilee wins and one of the 2 indicted politicians at the ICC wins, then the sanctions could have enormous consequences for Kenya: unemployment and economy are huge items!
- the problems are, but also the potential in this country is enormous.  After 6 months here I think that the President needs a minimum of 2 terms (10 years) to really change things***

Realising the reality of Kenya Vision 2030 will create many possibilities (see further down).

*** Landownership (ownership rights or compensation) is a big item which has been going on since independence and no-one has found easy to resolve.

- Security in remote areas such as Samburu and similar tribes who are fighting over livestock in the Tana Delta; these people have had an underpaid and under-staffed police force for years
- A professional and serious approach by the IEBC should enforce everyone's respect, I think.

But an important first step will be a peaceful and calm election.

My translation of the above, is that the politicians will take the clothes off your back!
To illustrate with some figures, with thanks to #KOT (Kenyans on Twitter)
- 9.3 million Kenyan Shillings was submitted to be approved for golden handshakes for members of parliament
- Every MP (Member of Parliament) should have a bodyguard for life and a state funeral when they die
- All 42 ministers and 55 assistants should have a car with driver
- Upon retiring all MPs should get a diplomatic passport

The golden handshake was rejected by President Kibaki, who of course has not denied himself a nice little something when he leaves........

- An MP in Kenya gets (calculated in relation to the GDP, Gross Domestic Product) 245 times as much salary as a Member of Congress in the USA.

(cartoon) The candidates are making plenty of promises - such as a laptop for every child of school age which will continue until every school child has one.

> The current 8 presidential candidates all have 24 hour armed guards.
> The 3 biggest coalitons have at their disposal, in total, 15 helicopters, 7 planes, 297 vehicles .. (this last item is paid for by the 'party security' fund in the government

But fortunately politics is much more relaxed now there is freedom of the press, and there is room to laugh too.

This is a programme in the style of the British 'Spitting Image' about politics and other matters concerning society.  There are of course various cartoonists and films to see on You Tube.

The rallies, party gatherings, are often made more appealing with DJs and live music and lots of dancing.  The last few days we hear and see more and more canvassing lorries passing by with loudspeakers and dancers.

The first President and Prime Minister of Kenya was Jomo Kenyatta after independence, from 1964-1978, he was the nation's founder and thought of as a wise man. There are lots of buildings and streets named after him.   He has done a lot of good for Kenya for sure, but not without controversy.  Lots of his potential opponents died in suspicious car crashes such as Tom Mboya, Pio Gama Tinto and lawyer Argwings-Kodhek. He is the father of Uhuru, current presidential candidate.

The following president was Daniel Arap Moi, van 1978-2002. After a failed coup attempt by air forice officers, he changed the constitution and Kenya became a one-party state (it already was effectively anyway since 1969).  During and after his period in office there were lots of accusations of corruption and violation of human rights.  Because of a peaceful transition to the next President (a deal?) a serious accusation or arrest was never made.  Moi was very popular with the people and still has (people say) a lot of influence behind the scenes.

The current president, Mwai Kibaki came to power in 2002 and will be in office till March this year.   In the 1970s Kibaki was a very successful Minister of Finance and during his time in office Kenya has had an enormous financial growth.  He also started an initiative for free primary school education which brought a million children into school who otherwise would not have been able to afford it.

Other things he has achieved in his 10 years in office are:

- The new constitution which was created in 2010
- A politics not based on personality but focused on the country
- More democracy and freedom.  There is criticism around the negligence in tackling tribal conflict - the leading politicians have been Kikuyu for a very long time.  Same with tacking corruption.  And of course the controversial elections and subsequent violence and crisis in 2007-2008.

An important item is the lauch of Kenya Vision 2030 in June 2008.  This multi-year development plan is intended to raise Kenya to middle income country and to increase the standard of living for all Kenyans by 2030.

www.vision2030.go.ke/

Anyway, along with all Kenyans we hope for a peaceful and calm week, also for our 2 boys who have a week off school.  But especially for all the children in Kenya who are hoping for a peaceful future full of possibilities.
