(speelkamer, tuin,
EuroDisney of Disney World USA is.
Even een leuk spreekwoord uit een boek "Be grateful for the shoes you have got, some people would be glad to stand in your shoes, especially because sometimes they do not have any shoes themselves"

......................
Well, I thought the other Kids parts 1 & 2 were a success and got some comments so therefore another post about children.
Here in Kenya they talk quite a lot about 'heritage' - as in what do you leave behind. It can be about politicians, successful business people, or companies, but very much also about parents.
And before everybody now thinks that we are talking about a "green earth", sorry but that is not what is on everybody's mind here so much. (That does not really work with an empty stomach is my humble opinion).
One usually talks about the (financial) future that you can leave your children with. And honestly I have never thought about that so much.
My parents & family in law have left us (are leaving us) with a lot and we are still very grateful
for that. But that is mainly financial, what I am my grateful to my parents for nearly every day is their
way of bringing me up and support. Maybe not always so clearly said or appreciated than in the past,
but certainly very important with my choices and values in my life now.
So what would we like our sons to remember or what our advice to them is, if you would like to call it that.......
(Jane has contributed as well of course)
As parents now and later hopefully the same for our children...
- Say goodnight to your family members every night even if that is by telephone.
- Try never to go to bed "angry" but try to talk things over before going to sleep.
- As a parent be involved with your childrens school * ( children can also be children as well !), also with their hobbies
- Teach children to say what they mean and to say what they feel
- Do nice things with your children, even if it might be something you do not like that much ;-)
(take Matthew to an Ajax football match in the Arena)
- Try and make sure that your children have the space to be a child, so to play ... (a playroom, garden, a playground or field close by to play)
- Do things with your family that help remind us how beautiful our earth is and how grateful we should be (to God) for what we have. (Look at the Northern Lights, go on a safari, or go and camp somewhere) { The last one is one of the things you might not like yourself ;-)
- Go and do something nice so that everyone can be a child again for a while, and your children can show their incredible enthusiasm, it does not matter if it is at a playground, a fun fair, EuroDisney or Disney World USA. (Matthew's face still glows and his eyes light up when he talks about our visit to EuroDisney a couple of years ago and still says thanks that we went there, but also wants to go again now with Kieran)
- It would be great too if our boys can keep their enthusiasm and lust for life that they have now,
happy and grateful discovering through life. (Sometime it seems people get a bit 'bored' or jaded by everything).
- Appreciation for what you have - material and also health, food on the table etcetera.
A nice expression from a book about Africa says :"Be grateful for the shoes you have got, some people would be glad to stand in your shoes, especially because sometimes they do not have any shoes themselves"
Now, directly to 'our children'...
- Appreciate nice food and drink, good quality above quantity.
(A glass of wine (in 15 years!), some cheese. chocolat, a nice piece of bread with chocolate sprinkles {very Dutch}, whatever you enjoy!)
- 'Save your memories', whether this is through photographs, films, a scrapbook or whatever, sometimes it is good to remember things and look back - it helps with keeping the right perspective.
- Be open to new things, even if that is sometimes hard, but also go back in time if that is necessary or just for fun! (Try something new but do not be afraid to back to places from your youth either)
- Be polite - polite people inhabit half the world and are usually more pleasant to be around
- Respect nature, do not litter. ('Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but pictures' - one of Jane's mottos)
- Respect your family and friends and keep in touch (better than your father does)
- Do something creative, play a musical instrument, do a sport or anything you like to do and learn
- Travel and go see the world, as far as possible, experiences above material things
- Do not smoke (the reasons are clear enough, I would think)
- Have children, so your parents will have grandchildren ...... ;-)
- Go and live wherever you want, even that is in a foreign country
Now this was a summation from our side, but there are probably loads more good things to say about this!? Please, feel welcome to mail us with your ideas or leave a reaction here of course.
The last couple of weeks we have been talking to several Kenyan people who are going to decide about our adoption. (People who claim that there's nothing to this procedure are probably following some other procedure!)
Some difficult questions are being asked, things we sometimes need a while to think over...
But soon more about that in a blog post about the procedure. This all makes (it necessary to) one think more about your relationship and your relationship with the children.
