 Spot Peter?
Vandaag, 1.Wesley Kibet, 2.Abraham Keter, 3.Moses Kigen. Bij de Dames 1. Salome Biwott.
Bedankt Nairobi.

Lots of fun, the down-draft from the helicopter above Uhuru (freedom) Highway for the first few kilometres
So, today was the day, running 10km of the Nairobi Marathon.
After spending more money on taxis than the entry fee cost (1000 KES/9 euro) to get my hands on my start number, which also cost more time than I actually spent running;-)
Today was the day!
After a bad night - lots of rain, having a cold, we were up early because the race began at 8.00am with a 7.30am arrival.
And the marathon had started at 7.00am, then there was the half marathon, the Tricycle and Wheelchair 'run' and the 5km Family run so all in all it was a busy day for the organisers.
 Spot Peter?
Everything took place in the Central Business District (CBD) where everything all the central streets were closed off. However everything all ran into each other, quite literally, typically African, so that lots of the "Family Runners" got under foot. The first few kilometres were more like a nice walk and along the whole route I had to do a lot of slalomming round the slower people.
Because of the rain there were lots of big puddles to get around. The course had 5 loops which had the funny effect that you kept seeing the same people and everyone kept speeding up to overtake each other.
I was a bit worried beforehand because of my fitness (didn't train enough and having a cold) I thought I would be one of the last .... but not at all, because not all Kenyans can run! And for many it was a fun run, for various charities and with the whole family, see the photos.
The race charity was "Run For A Reason" -Seeing is Believing -an organisation that fights (youth) blindness which is preventable, in the whole of Kenya. The expectation is that 19 miljoen KSH (190,000 euros) will be collected. There are already 800 children who can see again thanks to the last 9 editions of the race. 19.000 'athletes' from 70 countries took part, 2000 more than last year.
This is on top of the many sponsor schemes that the runners also have. My/our charity will follow, but more about that another time. (Also about my health and my weight loss, which is going gradually every week we are here. Especially now with my cold which is more like stomach flu).
It was OK weather, cloudy, water stations at 2, 5 and 10km and a great atmosphere. Shame though that only the half and full marathon runners got medals (next time I will train more ;-)
But taking part and experiencing it, as well as finishing, was the goal today and I met that. (The time isn't important).
Matthew ran the last few metres with me because the whole family came to encourage me over the finish :-)
Many Kenyans dream of being a good athlete due to the big money prizes.
Today: 1.Wesley Kibet, 2.Abraham Keter, 3.Moses Kigen. And the ladies: 1. Salome Biwott.
First prize was 1.5 KSH million for the winner and for the half marathon winner 150.000. (15000/1500 euro)
That's a lot of money here. Especially for the people who do this in 2+ hours.
Many of the athletes are Kalenjin (a group of 8 tribes) many with the same (or very similar) names with interesting meanings:Kibet = born in the afternoon, Kipketer = on the veranda.
(Maybe I'll do a piece on the tribes and unity some day, but it's a very complicated topic I think).

A great morning for many, including myself, with lots of people having fun running and lots of supporters, in an up-till-now great city. Thank you Nairobi!
