30-10-2012 Ikke - Me, Myself and I. (Part 1 ;-) **

Hallo Allemaal,

Even een berichtje over mezelf.

"What it is?"

** we zullen zien of dit een terugkerend onderwerp wordt ... :-)

        ============================================================

Hello everyone,
Now for a post about myself :-).

I've had no after effects from the 10 km run last Sunday, no muscle pain or anything so I must have trained better than I thought after all.  But I do have a streaming cold, my head is totally stuffed and I've got a bad cough so that's not so good.  Maybe it's in sympathy with the cold weather in Holland (-10 degrees?) and the storm in 'the America's' ;-)

By nature I'm a light sleeper, but here I totally am!  So I don't sleep many nights all the way through, but it doesn't really matter because I don't do a lot; also we all drink more here than at home because of the heat so it's normal to go to the bathroom during the night.  Then I can see if the askari (guard) is doing his job.  At 5am the birds start singing which is sometimes nice and sometimes not so nice; between 6.15am - 6.45am dawn begins to break and that means it's time (according to Matthew) to get up, which he doesn't do quietly.
 zijn werk wel doet.

Aside from all the preparations for the run last Sunday, I went to the centre of the city (CBD-Central Business District) a couple of times last week to reserve and collect bus tickets. I'm travelling during the day and the one company only sells seats 3 days in advance.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, I'm going to Mombasa by bus to see Wilma en Mike (500 km/8 hours in the bus).  At the end of the week she flies home to Holland already (time is really flying).

Due to an unfortunate 'meeting with the pavement', Wilma had injured her ankle and knee so wasn't up to a trip back up to Nairobi.  But she is willing to take some things in the plane back to Holland for us, that will save us some kilos and space in our luggage when we go home next year.  It will be strange not to be able to (cheaply :-)) text and call her any more, she's been here for 6 weeks.

On Mondays I help at the Dutch school in the library, which is actually lots of fun.  All the children from the toddlers up to group 8 (11 years) can borrow 3 books at a week at their reading level.  We give them out and register them per child so that the library can continue with all it's books present.  (With ex-pat and adoption families coming and going all the time, it's easy to lose track of the books).  The other library assistants are all women, from South America, Germany, Kenya and also a Dutch one, so it's interesting and educational talking to each other when it's quiet.

Doing shopping with Kieran also takes quite a while.  'Popping'  to the supermarket takes at least an hour and a half because he has to look at everything on the way:  "What it is?"  (in pidgin English) sometimes pointing at something so I can get an idea of what he means.  And he has to greet everyone, that is as long as he isn't (suddenly) shy and hiding behind me.  I wonder what he will be like when he starts school in mid-January....!

Anyway, we're not there yet. First 8 weeks still just keeping myself busy.

Jane is busy at work, she's on the phone a lot and there's now an extra hour's time difference since Europe changed their clocks, so it's 2 hours different to NL, 3 hours to the UK and 7 hours (later 8 hours when the US change their clocks) with the east coast of the US.  That's one thing that is strange for us here, it's always light and dark at the same time and (till March), more or less the same weather and seasons.  It's now spring, summer begins in December - summer at the pool!  (In 2012 our year will have consisted of 2 springs and 2 summers, one each in the northern and southern hemisphere!)

The pool is a place I see nearly every day, I often go down there and splash around with the boys in the afternoon.  Jane swims lengths, I run, walk and swim daily so am reasonably fit.  (Have lost 10kg already).

Sometimes Matthew goes to play with a school friend (which is really good for him) but he has to be picked up, usually by taxi.  I take the usual drivers, Dennis or James, we get a decent price, and in the last 2 months I've seen a lot of Nairobi.  The plan is in January to do more voluntary work when Kieran goes to school, but more about that later.
I also play 'house husband' of course, do the washing up and spend a lot of time with the children. *Ons apartment (like many) is 'serviced' and is cleaned every week day, we can have the washing up done if we wish, the beds are changed and we get clean towels twice a week and our washing and ironing is done.  That's very nice :-)

It's also quite normal, the Kenyans often bring a poorer family member to the city from their village to help in the household work and for room and board they earn a bit, as far as we understand.

And I try to keep the Blog up to date and tidy, and I read a lot.
My next project is to try and process and organise all your reactions, for which I THANK YOU!  They are all over the place, on Facebook, Whats App, e-mail and (luckily) in the Blog itself.  So it will be nice to organise them all into one place so we can look back on them and read them again later.  At the moment we are headed towards 10,000 readers or visitors from 62 countries which is fantastic.

OK, I'll be back soon.  Greetings from Nairobi from Peter and the family.
** (In the title) we will see if this is subject comes up again)
