Thanksgiving 2012

(yeah, yeah, alright already I do know that I am one day late technically, but give me a break!)

Thursday 22nd November is Thanksgiving Day in the USA.
Since most readers, after the Dutch & English, come from the Americas I thought it would be fitting to give thanks to some here in this post.

Guess to be off to a good start:
My wife Jane for being up to this adventure and keeping us in the bread and butter.
(My income is just about fit for the trimmings ;-)
She is also the one who keeps us organised, leaving within a week(!!!), and keeping an eye on the finances.

Our son Matthew for being a good sport, although he has a hard time missing his friends and The Netherlands in general, and being very enthusiastic about things in a way only he can be!
He is a beautiful and fun boy and we are very proud he is our son.

Naturally also to God, we do not advertise our religious beliefs as much as is normal in Kenya, but we do realise we had quite some help from the man upstairs and call upon him regulary.  We also need his help  and strength with our patience for things still to come.

Of course also thanks to Kieran for wanting to be with us, unconditionally, and being a funny and great child, who slowly but certainly is finding his place in our family of four.  We hope to show everybody soon in 2013 how great he is as a son, brother and child in his own right.

Then all the people in The Netherlands, our family (thanks sisters, for visiting!!!) and friends everybody who wrote / writes a comment on the blog, facebook, sends an email or whats app message. And sending some great things ! (You know who you are ;-)

The same is true for our family and friends in the United Kingdom, keeping in touch via email, skype and facebook and being encouraging before we left, even though it was (and is) all a bit scary and uncertain. Especially a big Thank You to Ruth coming all this way on her own and bringing all the goodies for the Childrens Home!

( ja,ja al goed ik weet dat het gisteren thanksgiving was en dit een dag te laat is, maar technische problemen)

Donderdag 22ste November is Thanksgiving Day in de USA.
Omdat na de Nederlandse & Engelse lezers, de meeste uit Amerika komen dacht ik dat het goed was om eens Dank of Bedankt te zeggen in dit bericht.

Om maar meteen goed te beginnen:
Mijn vrouw Jane omdat ze bereid was dit avontuur aan te gaan en ons van brood en beleg voorziet.
(mijn inkomen is nu net voldoende voor de boter, chips en wat ketchup ;-)
Zij is ook degene die ons georganiseerd houdt, weg naar Kenia binnen 1 week (!!!), en ze houd een oogje op de financieen.
Onze zoon Matthew omdat hij soms licht zeurend er toch wel blij mee is hier te zijn, ook al mist hij zijn vrienden en Nederland in het algemeen, en hij is erg enthousiast over nieuwe dingen leren op een manier zoals hij dat alleen kan!
Het is een mooie jongen die graag lacht en we zijn er trots op dat hij onze zoon is.

Natuurlijk zijn we ook dankbaar regnover God, we lopen niet zo te koop met onze religieuze overtuiging zoals men dat hier in Kenia wel doet, maar we weten dat we nogal wat hulp hebben gehad van de man boven en vragen hem daar ook om.We zullen die hulp ook nog wel nodig hebben om geduld te hebben met de dingen die nog gaan komen.

Zeker ook dank aan Kieran omdat hij bij ons wil zijn, onvoorwaardelijk, en dat hij zo grappig is en een fantastisch kind, hij vind langzaam maar zeker zijn plek binnen ons gezin van vier.
We hopen snel in 2013 iedereen te kunnen laten kennismaken wat een leuke zoon, broer en kind het is.

Dan alle mensen in Nederland, onze familie (bedankt zussen, voor de bezoekjes!!!) en vrienden, iedereen die commentaar schrijft / geschreven heeft op het blog, facebook, een email stuurt of een tekst berichtje.
En wat fantastische dingen gestuurd heeft! (Je weet wel wie ik bedoel ;-)

Het zelfde is zo voor onze familie en vrienden in Engeland, om contact te houden via email, skype en facebook en ons te steunen voordat we weg gingen, ook als was (en is) het moeilijk en een beetje eng met alle onzekerheden.Vooral ook hartstikke Bedankt aan Ruth om hier alleen helemaal naar toe te komen en voor al de dingen die ze meebracht voor het Kinder tehuis!

* Dat is speciaal voor het blog (omdat we net als mijn zus, alles willen uitprinten en bewaren, als dit avontuur voorbij is) En ook al reageer ik niet altijd, of niet direct, soms komen de commentaren pas later binnen of soms weet ik gewoon niet wat ik moet antwoorden of zeggen!

Ook al wordt je naam hier niet genoemd, we zijn nog steeds erg blij met je emails, FB berichten, whats app of SMS, Dankjewel! ( Maar voel je Welkom om het commentaar op de blog te geven! Als zelfs JP het kan ;-)))) dan kan iedereen het!

En we kunnen de aanmoediging gebruiken!
Internet is nog steeds lastig en onze realtie met CWSK is op z'n minst moeizaam te noemen.Als alles zo doorgaat dan zijn we hier nog wel wat maanden...

Hoe dan ook, het weer is fantastisch, we hebben veel om naar uit te kijken, bezoekers, leuke dingen die we nog gaan doen, en we zien het allemaal positief in!

Korte update 21/11--Short update 21/11

Goed, we zijn dus verhuisd en bewonen nu nummer 6 in hetzelfde gebouw ipv 15.
Op de 1ste verdieping met een aantal voordelen:
Meteen bij de deur-ingang handig met de boodschappen.
De jongens zijn snel buiten en op tijd bij de schoolbus ;-)
Een luxere badkamer met een douche kop die je niet hoeft vast te houden.
En de bedoeling was met Internet ... *

Verders is het apartement grotendeels een copy (zoals alle).  Wat wel leuk is dat we Mary, onze schoonmaakster "houden" samen met Lynette blijft ze bij ons schoonmaken "omdat we het zo goed met haar kunnen vinden" aldus de manager; ze willen echt dat we blijven !
*De bedoeling want op Jane haar laptop na werkt het niet echt...  Maar ja, dat is ook het belangrijkste.Voor nu even geen Skype en langere blog berichten tot we een goede oplossing weten te vinden.

Ondertussen qua adoptie procedure.
Na wat pittige telefoongesprekken nu een (laatste) meeting met J. van CWSK morgen, donderdag.
Want aankomend zondag de 25ste is Kieran al 3 maanden bij ons (!!!) wat betekend het einde van de pleegzorg periode.  En onze advocaat wil maandag direct het proces in de rechtbank opstarten door alle papieren in te leveren, we zijn benieuwd of dit mogelijk is .....

Dus blijf ons volgen!  Met onregelmatige tussen pauzes :-) zal ik iedereen op de hoogte houden.

Alright, we have moved from number 15 to 6 in the same building.
On the first floor with a number of advantages:
Directly at the entrance so good with heavy bags (shopping).
The boys can be outside quickly and in time for the schoolbus ;-)
A more 'luxurious' bathroom with a shower you do not have to hold with one hand.
And the idea was with Internet .... *

For the rest the apartment is pretty identical (like all).  What is good is that Mary our housekeeper will stay with us, together with Lynette cleaning our place " because you are so friendly with each other " according to the manager, they really do not want us to leave !

* the idea was we would have a better Internet connection downstairs but apart from Jane's laptop it still does not work...

But that is the most important. So for now no Skype or long blog posts till we find a better solution.

Meanwhile the adoption procedure.
After some tense telephone conversations we will now have a (last) meeting with J. from CWSK tomorrow, Thursday. Because Sunday the 25th Kieran will have been with us for 3 months (!!!) which means it is the end of the foster period. And our lawyer wants to file all papers to start the court proceedings on Monday, we will see if that is possible....

So keep following us!  With irregular intervals :-) I will keep everybody posted.

Acacia Camp, Swara Plains - Nu Ook in Nederlands

Here a 'very' touristy post about Acacia Camp.  While our friend Ruth was here she read all there was to read about Nairobi and direct surroundings and she found this place in the Lonely Planet Kenya book.*

On the off chance that it was possible we sent an email to hear if it was possible to book for the 5 of us for just a night. The idea being that we would have some kind of 'safari' but not the costs of going to one of the big reserves and not the time spent travelling there and back...

Since Acacia Camp is an hours' drive away from Nairobi it is a possible day trip for anyone!  It is handy to have a map  / or know the way! We drove straight past the turn-off.

The Small World country club is not that easy to find, Primarosa Flowers is easier to spot than you have to keep an eye out to the right. Just in front of the Cement works and there are loads of bottles on the gates on the side of the road and a small sign to Acacia Camp.



We were welcomed by Jimmy, who it turned out was also doing the game drives.  We got settled in our bandas (huts) and a had a first look around. The first, oh no second animal I saw was a Von Der Decken's Hornbill**  the first we all saw was an ostrich running away in front of the car.We already spotted loads of other birds but needed to look carefully to know what was what!

There are 270 bird species that have been seen at Acacia, and there were two A4 lists which named them, so the quest was to spot as many as possible, although the entry "bird" and such did drive up the number a little bit ...

Michael was our waiter, barman, and main source of information.We had booked a full board stay complete with all the meals, which you really need to because there is nowhere else close by.

The 'reviews' (which I do not always trust, not everyone's tastes are the same of course) said the food was very good, and with that we certainly agree!  We had a great three course warm lunch which also catered for vegetarians and the children.  Which made us wonder if it was possible to equal or surpass this for dinner!

Acacia is located on 20.000 acres (!) of reserve in Swara Plains, which itself is next to the Athi River and the Kapiti Plains which as the crow flies is not all that far away from Nairobi National Park.

It has a working ranch mainly for cattle, and local people can 'rent' space for grazing for their Maasai cattle herds. The animals are free to roam everywhere and nothing is controlled or interfered with, which would explain the number of cattle bones and skulls littering the ranch. (Although you are free to walk the plains, they do contain jackal, hyena and supposedly cheetah).

The "boundary" fences are fairly easy to breach at places, we saw several zebra's (not the smallest animal) go underneath them and thats was seems to happen a lot.  The predators can travel for hundreds of miles all the way to Tanzania (Serengeti-Maasai Mara) and back, the same goes for the wildebeest that live here.
The film "Duma" which means cheetah in Swahili, was shot at the Swara plains, but although there are claims they are still around we did not see any...

Around 4.30pm in the afternoon as the heat died down a bit we took a game drive with Jimmy, just the 5 of us in a safari vehicle with a roof that opened so we could stand and look out.

The drive started off without us seeing anything for about half an hour, and Jimmy was a bit perplexed, but once we saw our first animal, actually a herd of wildebeest, we started seeing a lot.  Probably the most interesting was a Kori's Busterd, the largest bird of flight, like an ostrich but without the plumage, pale brown and blue in colour.  It's a snake-eating bird and they are quite rare but usually seen in pairs and we did see the mate, then later we saw another pair, and another.  We also saw a pair of jackals  and the ever-present zebra and giraffe.  Around sunset we stopped and got out of the vehicle for some cold drinks, (sundowners)and to look at the stars which were so clear in this unpolluted sky.

When we got back to the camp in the dark, they had a campfire going with seats around it and a bottle of wine for the adults, soda for the children.  Did I also mention that we were the only guests, and had the camp to ourselves for the entire 28 hours or so that we were there?

Dinner was great, and plentiful, and it was a crime to leave so much uneaten.  It was pitch black there of course, in the middle of nature and the electricity was rationed, so we all had early nights in our huts; there were strange animal sounds all around us but we felt quite safe. 

Next morning I was up early and took a little walk around the camp; which consisted of about 14 bandas around the edge of a large garden which had mature trees and ponds in it, with lots of bird life.  Over a bridge are the open plains and right there on the edge of the garden was a group of 3 giraffe feeding and to the left in the bushes, a herd of zebra.  I had to creep back and get Jane and the boys out to look, so there we were in our PJs and flip flops in the dewy grass at 7am, but it was a sight we wouldn't have missed.  Unfortunately Coca Cola, the camp dog, came running over and chased them off :-(

After breakfast we all took a walk around on the plains in the vicinity of the camp.  We didn't see much more than some zebra, giraffe and hartebeest, but it was a lovely walk.  We ended our stay by relaxing back at the camp, enjoying the sunshine and birdlife as well as the numerous Vervet monkeys that live in the trees around the camp.  Including a tall tree full of vultures!  We finished with another amazing 3-course lunch before our drive back to the busy city.  It had been a real find, and such a tranquil and lovely place just an hour from Nairobi.

Just a short summary of what we saw:
vervet monkey, jackal, gnoe=wildebeest, zebra, Kori's bustard, Egyptian geese, francolins, warthog, Thomson gazelle, Maasai giraffe, Grants gazelle, hartebeest, eland, ostrich, hyena, tree hyrax,
And loads more birds:
sunbirds,weavers,starlings, hornbills, woodpeckers, finches,plovers, ibises, egrets, vultures, doves, lovebirds, (a favourite ! => ) Go-away-birds, mousebirds, bee-eaters, wagtails, shrikes, flycatchers.

Hier een erg toeristisch stukje over Acacia Camp.Toen onze vriendin Ruth hier was heeft ze alles gelezen wat er was over Nairobi en omgeving en ze vond deze plek in de Lonely Planet Gids over Kenia.*
( waar we haar erg dankbaar voor zijn :-)

(*Ook al was de omschrijving niet zo accuraat, geen jachtluipaarden te  zien! Ja, wel een recent boek 06/2012 met dank aan mijn CZM IKEA collega's uit Haarlem ;-)

In de hoop dat het nog mogelijk was stuurden we een emails om voor ons 5en te boeken voor 1 nachtje. Het idee was dat we wel de 'safari' ervaring zouden hebben zonder de kosten van naar een groot reservaat te gaan en de reistijd er naar toe...

Omdat Acacia Camp maar een uurtje weg is van Nairobi is het een goed dagtrip voor wie dan ook!
Het is wel handig om een goede kaart te hebben of de weg te weten! Wij reden zo voorbij de oprit.

je blijven opletten aan de rechterkant van de weg.
Net voor de cementfabriek hanger er veel plastic flessen aan de hekken aan de kant van de weg en een klein bordje naar Acacia Camp.


We werden welkom geheten door Jimmy, die naar later bleek ook de game drives organiseerde.
Nadat we onze spullen in de bandas (hutten) gelegd hadden konden we eerst eens rondkijken.
Het eerste, oh nee tweede dier wat ik zag was een Von Der Decken's Hornbill** het eerste was een struisvogel die voor de auto langs sprintte.We hadden al veel meer vogels gezien, maar moesten eerst eens goed gaan kijken wat nu wat was.

Er zijn 270 soorten vogels gespot bij Acacia, en er hingen 2 lijstjes op A4tjes waarop ze allemaal genoemd werden, dus de wedstrijd kon beginnen om er zoveel mogelijk te vinden.
(al moet ik wel zeggen dat namen zoals 'vogel' het aantal nogal opdreven)

Michael was onze bediening, barman en belangrijkste bron van informatie.We hadden een volledige pension boeking met alle maaltijden, wat wel nodig was want er is niets anders dichtbij.

De kritieken ( die ik niet altijd vertrouw, niet iedereen zijn smaak en criteria zijn hetzelfde natuurlijk) zeiden dat het eten erg goed was, en daar zijn we het zeker mee eens! We hadden een fantastische warme lunch die ook geschikt was voor vegetariers en kinderen.Zodat we ons meteen afvroegen of het diner wel net zo goed of zelfs beter kon zijn!

Acacia Farm & Camp ligt binnen een gebied van  20.000 acres (!) reservaat in de Swara Plains, wat naast Athi River en de Kapiti Plains ligt wat hemelsbreed niet zover weg is van  Nairobi National Park.

Er is een boerderij die in bedrijf is, voornamelijk voor vee en de lokale mensen kunnen ruimte huren om hun Maasai vee te laten grazen.De wilde dieren zijn vrij om overal rond te lopen en er wordt niets gedaan aan controle of beheer, wat waarschijnlijk het grote aantal koeiebotten verklaard die overal te vinden zijn.( ook al mag je overal vrij rond lopen, er moeten jakhalzen, hyena's en jachtluipaarden zijn)

De hekken waarmee het totale reservaat is "afgesloten" zijn gemakkelijk  te omzeilen voor de dieren,
we zagen verschillende zebra's (toch niet het kleinste dier) er onder door gaan en dat lijkt regelmatig te gebeuren.
De roofdieren kunnen honderden kilometers trekken voor eten helemaal naar Tanzania toe (Serengeti-Maasai Mara) en terug en hetzelfde geldt voor de wildebeest (gnoe) en ook zebra.
De film  "Duma" wat jachtluipaard ofwel  cheetah is in Swahili, werd hier opgenomene op de Swara plains, en hoewel er beweerd wordt dat ze er nog zijn hebben we geen tekenen gezien ...

Rond 16.30 's middags toen het wat minder warm was geworden gingen we op game drive met Jimmy, alleen wij 5en in een safari Landcruiser met een dak wat open kan zodat je kan staan en rond kunt kijken.

Het begon het eerste half uur met helemaal niets te zien en Jimmy was erg verbaast, maar toen we eenmaal de eerste kudde wildebeest hadden gezien, zagen we steeds meer.
Iets wat erg interessant was, was de  Kori's Busterd, de grootste vogel die ook nog kan vliegen, iets zoals een struisvogel maar zonder de verdendos, lichtbruin en blauw in kleur.Het is een vogel die slangen eet en ze zijn redelijk zeldzaam en meestal in paartjes en we zagen de 2de al snel en later nog 2 en even later weer 2 andere.We zagen ook een paar jakhalzen en de zebra's die je overal ziet en giraffes.Rond zonsondergang stopten we om uittestappen en wat koude drankjes te drinken  (sundowners)en en naar de sterren te kijken die erg helder zijn in de heldere, schone lucht.

 

Toen we terug kwamen in het kamp in het donker, brandde er een kampvuur met zitjes eromheen

en een fles wijn voor de volwassenen en prik voor de kinderen.Had ik al gezegd dat we de enige gasten waren in het hele kamp die er voor de tijd dat wij er verbleven waren ?

 

Het Diner was wederom ontzettend goed en meer dan genoeg en we lieten misdadig veel staan.

Het was natuurlijk pikdonker midden in de natuur en de electriciteit was gerationeerd, dus hadden we allemaal een vroegere bedtijd in onze hutten; en hoewel er allerlei rare dieren geluiden waren om ons heen voelden we ons veilig en sliepen we best.

 

De volgende ochtend was ik al vroeg wakker en liep een rondje door het kamp, wat bestond uit ongeveer 14 bandas rondom een grote tuin met volgroeide bomen en vijvers erin met ontzettend veel vogels.

Over een brug beginnen de open vlaktes en precies daar op de rand van de tuin stond een groep van 3 giraffen te eten en iets verder in het struikgewas een kudde zebra's.

 

Ik moest terug sluipen om Jane en de jongens te halen, dus daar stonden we in onze pyama's en op onze slippers in het gras nat van de dauw om 07.00 's ochtends, maar het was een uitzicht wat we niet hadden willen missen.Helaas kwam toen  Coca Cola, de hond aanrennen die ze allemaal weg jaagde

Na het ontbijt gingen we met zijn allen een stuk wandelen over de vlaktes dichtbij het kamp.

We zagen min of meer hetzelfde, zebra's, giraffes en hartebeest, maar het was een prima wandeling.

We eindigden ons bezoek met ontspannen zitten en wat rondlopen bij het kamp, genieten van de zon en de vogels en de brutale vervet aapjes die in grote getale in de bomen leven rondom het kamp.

Zelfs in de boom vol met gieren zaten er apen!

 

We aten nog eeen hele goede 3 gangen lunch voordat we terug reden naar de drukke stad.Het was een fantastisch uitstapje geweest, zo'n rustige en mooie plek een uurtje bij Nairobi vandaan.

Daily Life - Dagelijks Leven (part / deel 3)

And Yes! I am sitting (hanging is a better description) on our settee ..
(uhum, I was and just lost the signal...Anyway, I will just continue as if nothing happened)
... and using the Internet!

There are 3 networks in our building for WiFi and a broadband cable.
Sophie, to be used in the grounds and downstairs in the hall.
Bundu Basher, which we were allowed to use because the router is in the penthouse just above us.
Camelot Consultants, which is the company that owns the buidling and has offices at the lowest level.
We have got access to all these networks, we received all the passwords and security levels from IT.
But really Bundu is the best for us and most stable, unfortunately a cable in the server had short circuited, which probably had nothing to do with the storm but left us without Internet in the apartment.  Probably because of to many users (???) Sophie was not very stable either.
No biggie it was just annoying thats all! (Certainly if you are working like Jane is)

Because there are only 14 apartments and 3 are currently not occupied and we now have nearly been here the longest, the owner made certain that the Internet was fixed "for us".
Well that is really good news, espescially for Jane who was going up and down all the time to be able to work. ( I only did the same to check the email)

We are currently on generator again, so electricity problems in Kilimani, but not for us!

Sunday evening around 6.45pm we had a strange experience suddenly the lights went out for a couple of seconds than came back on, than dimmed to less than half the normal power.
Since it was not really possible to wash the boys or read a book (TV went out and stayed off for hours) I did go down to talk to Julius (the askari) to ask what was happening.
He did not know either, but had checked down the street and it was not a local Brookview problem,
he wondered if Kenya Power was rationing because of repairs somewhere ...
However a bit later he switched the generator on and reset the building from PowerNet to generator.

Meanwhile the digging for the storm drain seems to be finished, now they have to actually start making the drain.The swimming pool is very dirty, but we (Matthew & me and Kieran in a supporting act) managed to fish 14 frogs from the pool and put them back in the river.
Boy, the pool'boy' / gardener has been planting new grass and will probably clean the pool soon.

                                                      


The weather has improved so we are ready to sit & swim outside again :-)

Monday we had a 'nice' morning at Immigration to extend our visas for another 3 months and we had to be registered as "aliens" (finally I hear someone say ;-) a requirement after 90 days stay in Kenya.
We are now okay to stay till mid-February 2013.

Tomorrow we get our first visit from the guardian ad litum, the person who "protects the interests" of Kieran by visiting us and writing a report and being in court during the proceedings.

So, all is pretty well in our corner of the world at the moment.
Pretty soon I hope to post some more 'interesting' blogs about things in and around Nairobi.

En, Jawel hoor! Ik zat (hang is een betere omschrijving) op de bank ..
(uhum, dat was zo en toen geen wifi meer...Hoe dan ook, ik ga gewoon door alsof er niets gebeurde)
... en gebruikte het Internet!

Er zijn 3 netwerken in ons gebouw voor WiFi en een kabel voor internet.
Sophie, voor de tuin en beneden bij de receptie.
Bundu Basher, die we mochten gebruiken omdat de router recht boven ons in de penthouse staat.
Camelot Consultants, wat de eigenaar is van het gebouw en ze hebben kantoren op het laagste nivo.
We hebben nu toegang tot al deze netwerken, we kregen alle wachtwoorden etc. van IT.
Maar de beste is Bundu en het meest stabiele, helaas was er kortsluiting in een kabel in de server, wat waarschijnlijk niets van doen had met de storm maar we hadden dus geen Internet in het apartement. Waarschijnlijk vanwege teveel gebruikers (???) Sophie was ook niet erg stabiel.
Niet verschrikkelijk maar wel erg irritant! (zeker als je probeert te werken zoals Jane)

Omdat er maar 14 apartementen zijn en er nu 3 leeg zijn en we hier nu bijna het langste wonen, zorgde de eigenaar ervoor dat Internet zo snel mogelijk weer online was "voor ons".
( het viel op dat we pontificaal in de hal zaten en dat vond hij vervelend)
Maar goed das heel goed nieuws, vooral voor Jane die elke keer op en neer liep om te kunnen werken. (Ik deed dat alleen om even de email te checken)

We zijn nu weer afhankelijk van de aggregaat, elektriciteitsproblemen in Kilimani, maar niet voor ons!

Zondag avond rond 1845 hadden we een rare ervaring plotseling gingen de lichten uit voor een paar seconden kwamen toen weer aan, en dimden toen naar minder dan 50% sterkte.
Omdat het niet echt mogelijk was om de jongens in bad/douche te doen en je nog geen boek kon lezen (TV ging ook uit en bleef uren uit) ging ik maar eens beneden praten met Julius (de bewaker) om te vragen wat er aan de hand was. Hij wist het ook niet zeker, maar had gecheckt in de straat en het was geen lokaal probleem bij ons maar overal, hij vroeg zich af of Kenya Power een rantsoenering had ingesteld om ergens reparaties uit te voeren.
Hoe dan ook, iets later zette hij de aggregaat aan en resette het gebouw van Algemeen Stroomnet naar de aggregaat.

Ondertussen is het graven voor de storm afvoer klaar, nu moeten ze het ook daadwerkelijk gaan aanleggen.Het zwembad is ontzettend smerig, maar we (Matthew & ik en Kieran als ondersteunende supporter) hebben er alvast 14 kikkers uitgevist en ze terug in de rivier gegooid.
Boy, de poolboy / tuinman / klusjes man heeft nieuw gras geplant en zal nu waarschijnlijk snel het zwembad schoonmaken.

Het weer is verbeterd dus we zijn er straks weer helemaal klaar voor om buiten te zitten & te zwemmen :-)

Maandag hadden we een 'leuke' ochtend bij de Immigratiedienst om onze visa te verlengen voor nog 3 maanden en we moesten ons registreren als d as "aliens"( eindelijk hoor ik sommigen zeggen  ;-) iets wat verplicht is na 90 dagen in Kenia te zijn.  We mogen nu tot half februarie 2013 blijven.


Morgen krijgen we ons eerste bezoek van de Guardian ad Litum, de persoon die "de belangen behartigd"  van Kieran door ons te bezoeken en een rapport te schrijven en hij is in de rechtbank tijdens de hele procedure.

Dus alles is hier goed, in ons hoekje van de wereld.
Binnenkort hoop ik wat meer 'interessante' berichten te publiceren over dingen in en rondom Nairobi.

Kieran's Karakter - Kieran's Character

Hallo Allemaal,  08 november.

Jawel hoor we zijn  terug! Gisteren kwam er een andere IT dame die alles opnieuw geinstalleerd heeft en nu zijn we weer volledig online ... (teminste daar lijkt het wel op ;-)
Gelukkkig maar!
Ja,ja het is een luxe WiFi, draadloos en ook broadband in je apartement, maar met het (voor hier) redelijk slechte weer hier en de complete verbouwing van de tuin & alle modder daar + plus het feit dat ik sneller boeken lees dan dat we ze (helaas) kunnen aanschaffen is Internet toch wel een moetje!

Maar goed nu eens wat meer over Kieran, zijn uitspraken, karakter en (eigen)aardigheden.

Kieran Kuyanda heeft het best moeilijk gehad in het begin, (en nog wel) wat op zijn leeftijd vooral met de taal en begrip van de situatie te maken had.(en heeft) Natuuurlijk is het prima dat je een dak boven je hoofd hebt een bed en wat spulletjes voor jezelf en te eten, maar ja.. Hoe lang duurt dat ?
Want je bent 4 jaar en hebt altijd in hetzelfde kindertehuis gewoont wat "bekend" was en nu opeens die rare blanke "mama & papa" en 1 jochie die zich je broertje noemt...
Het missen en de 'rouw verwerking' uitte zich bij Kieran in onverklaarbare ( op dat moment) verschrikkelijke huilbuien ( hij kan huilen voor heel Kenya) en met kortademigheid richting hyperventilatie.
Op andere momenten ( bij een 'Nee' of correctie vooral) door een afsluiten van de wereld en in het niets te staren minuten lang totaal op niets en niemand te reageren.
Gelukkig schrikken we niet zo heel erg snel en met  een klein beetje, veel geduld, en rustig te praten en hem vast te houden zijn we deze stations nu voor het grootste gedeelte gepasseerd.

Zijn zelfvertrouwen en zekerheid zijn zeker toegenomen al is dit in stapjes.
Meneertje vind niet alles meer lekker wat er aan eten voor z'n neus gezet wordt en probeert de grenzen (soms tot vervelens toe ;-) te verkennen van wat Papa & Mama redelijk vinden!

Taal, uitpraken
Na Swahili is Engels zijn 2de taal en dat gaat best aardig.
Na de eerste woordjes zoals "Goodnight" en "bye,bye, See you!" de hele dag door enthousiast te gebruiken komen er nu soms grappige combinaties uit.
Zoals 'Matthew snake' als Matthew aan het zwemmen is of over zichzelf  "Kieran {no} go swimming fish" als hij wel of  juist niet wil gaan zwemmen.
Ook favoriet is: "what you doing ?" of (iets irritanter ;-) " what it is ? " en dat wel honderd keer op een dag...
Wat lastiger in te schatten is " tummy ache has come" terwij hij pijnlijk kijkt en het herhaalt al wrijvend over zijn buikje!
Nederlands is nog wat lastiger, al is "Lekkker" (natuurlijk) al een vast woord in het repetoire samen met 'Nee' en 'papa kom' al klinken sommige woorden natuurlijk hetzelfde in het Engels & Nederlands
Met oefenen,Nederlandse boeken voorlezen en wat Nederlandse liedjes* en DVD's van oa Nijntje hopen we een basis te hebben qua begrip voor als de school begint in Januari 2013.

Broer
Tja, na een lange verkennings periode (van beide kanten afwisselend) hebben de mannetjes elkaar echt wel gevonden! En is er nu het echte besef dat ze beiden in de familie blijven.
Als het erg hard regent en onweert kruipt Matthew bij Kieran in bed om hem gerust te stellen (en zichzelf ook!) en 's ochtends plagen ze elkaar vaak tot ze beiden echt goed wakker zijn.
Kieran heeft het "klikken" tot kunst verheven met uitspraken als, "Mama, come look, now!"
"Matthew too wet in the sink"  als onze oudste iets te enthousiast z'n tanden en de halve badkamer poetst.
Vooral bijzonder was de pijn aan Kieran's hoofd die toch echt Matthew zijn schuld was!
( Kieran viel op z'n hoofd, en liep later op de dag tegen de boekenkast aan, gevolg een groot ei.
Beide momenten was Matthew op school en er niemand in zijn buurt, gevalletje "eigen schuld dikke bult" dus ;-)

Ouders
Mama blijft de favoriet (en das ook prima, zo aardig is papa ook weer niet ;-) maar de vele dagen samen werpt zeker zijn vruchten af in de vader - jongste zoon relatie.
Papa heeft wat minder geduld (voor onzin) en is wat strenger ( beide logisch doordat ik wat meer tijd met de jongens besteed doordeweeks, lijkt mij) maar is er wel voor hem, ook bij een enge droom 's nachts als hij huilt of verontrustend brabbelt in de nacht en mama zich nog eens omdraait!

Nu wat woorden van Kieran zelf.

Mama is de maker van de lekkerste maaltijden onder andere,Tomaten Salade! Maar ook van (veel te) pittige gerechten.Met haar kan ik lekker kleuren en andere creatieve dingen doen en ze kan heel goed voorlezen.
Papa is de beheerder van de Ipad waar ik Talking Tom erg leuk op vind!En op hem kan ik klimmen en met hem stoeien.

Verder hebbben ze me alle drie natuurlijk Simba (& Nyala) gegeven, de Disney leeuwtjes die ik overal mee naar toe wil nemen en die bij me zijn tijdens m'n favoriete bezigheid "Slapen!".
Wat ik graag doe als ik moe ben van alle (nieuwe) indrukken en woorden!.

Wat vind ik niet zo leuk ...
Vies zijn! Films kijken want dan moet ik te lang stil zitten.... (we zijn benieuwd straks op school)
Vreemden die tegen me beginnen te praten, want ik ben best een beetje verlegen.
Ik geef niet zoveel om snoep en de meeste lollies, liever soms een koekje.
Kou! En koud zijn, water, buiten etc. dan zeg ik " Baridi".

Waar hou ik verder zoal van ?
Milky Tea & Toast voor ontbijt (Jawel, Hackett-family ik ben net Engels)
Naar "Ellen" * kijken en muziek luisteren en dansen. ( ik heb sterke heup bewegingen ;-)
Mango Juice in grote hoeveelheden! En chips in allerlei smaken.
Met water spelen, zolang het maar niet te koud of te warm is!
Op de glijbaan of schommel spelen.
Een beetje van vlinders en vogels (op veilige afstand) want alles wat groter dan mijn pink is en dichterbij komt vind ik echt niet leuk! ( vooral honden niet )
Ook leuk vind ik: Tante Wilma, Tante Ruth, Ooms Mike & Dick en Skypen met Nana.
(andere familie zeker ook, maar nog minder gezien en gesproken)
En natuurlijk knuffelen en ontzettend natte smakkende zoenen geven aan mijn hele familie!

* Ellen DeGeneres is op M-net series 1 van de 3 Digital Satelite TV kanalen die we kunnen ontvangen.

Dusse, nu weten jullie iets meer over mij!
Als die meneer (of mevrouw) de rechter het straks allemaal goed vind dan ga ik velen van jullie volgend jaar zien, nadat ik in een heel groot vliegtuig* ben geweest, spannend allemaal hoor!

* " Papa,mama, Aeroplane, big one!, Kieran go home" ... 
(eigenlijk geen toelichting nodig, maar vooral nadat Ruth en Wilma terug vlogen naar hun thuis en we regelmatig {kleine} vliegtuigjes zien)

Hello All,          12 november.

Finally I can write this piece in English, Sorry about that.
After (less than) 1 day of Internet everything stopped again. And now all networks including the one on the ground floor that we sometimes use when in the garden, or seated at the entrance steps.
It seems that today (Monday) someone will come again to have a look what the problem is.
Yes, of course it is a luxury to have WiFi and broadband in the apartment and certainly there are worse things in the world (!) But because of the reasonably bad weather and the digging up of the whole garden and pool area + the fact that I am nearly through reading all my books... Internet is quite a must!

Anyway now some more about Kieran, what does he say, what is he like and what does he like.

Kieran Kuyanda had a bit of a hard time in the beginning, what at his age had to do with language and understanding the new situation. Of course it is great that you have a roof over your head, an own bed, some toys and food to eat, but for how long will this last ?

Because you are 4 years and have always lived in the same children's home which was "known" and now all of a sudden there are these white "mummy and daddy" and a boy who calls himself your brother...

The missing his home and 'processing the new situation' for Kieran led to unexplainable (at that moment) crying (and he can cry for a whole country) which gave him shortness of breath bordering on hyperventilation.

At another time (usually if we said 'No' or he had to be corrected) he would 'close himself off' and not react to anything or anyone while staring straight forward for minutes on end.

Luckily we do not scare easily and with a little bit,  a lot of patience and talking to him calmly and holding him all the time, these occurences are now pretty much in the past.

His self-confidence and security have improved although this is happening in small steps.
He does not like everything anymore that is served as a meal and he tries to see to how far he can stretch the limits of what mom & dad think is reasonable and acceptable!

Language
After Swahili, English is his 2nd language and that is going quite alright.
After first words like "goodnight" and "bye,bye, see you!" which he used the whole day through, he sometimes comes out with very funny combinations.

Like "Matthew snake" when Matthew is swimming or about himself "Kieran (no) go swimming fish" when he does or does not want to go swimming.
Also a favourite is: "what you doing ?" or (somewhat more irritating ; -) "what it is ?" and that a hundred times a day.....

A bit harder are things like "tummy ache has come" while looking very pained and repeating it while rubbing over his stomach.

Dutch is a bit harder, although "lekker" (nice) is of course already a set word in his vocabulary, also "nee" and "papa come" although some words sound the same in English & Dutch.
With some practice, Dutch books and some Dutch songs* and the DVD of Nijntje (Miffy) we hope to give him enough of a start so that he will be okay at school in January 2013.

Brother
After quite some time getting used to each other (from both sides) the little men have really found each other now! And they both now realise that they are going to be a part of this family.
If it rains really hard and thunders Matthew will go into Kieran's bed to comfort him (and himself!)
and in the morning they tease each other till they are both really awake.
Kieran is a real tell-tale with things like, "Mummy, come look, now!" "Matthew too wet in the sink"
when our oldest is  brushing his teeth and the whole bathroom a bit too enthousiastically.
Espescially interesting was the time that Kieran's bump on the head that he insisted was Matthew's fault!:  Kieran fell over and banged his head, and later that day he walked into the bookcase, so he had a big lump on his head. Both moments there was no-one else near him and Matthew was at school. So, it really was he himself being clumsy ;-)

Ocasionally Kieran will run but be looking behind him and walk into things / trip and fall.
Luckily it is getting less. He is very enthusiastic and wants to see everything around him all the time.


Parents
Mummy is still favoured the most (and that's fine, dad is not really that nice ;-) but the many days we spend together are really good for our father - youngest son relationship.  Dad has a little less patience (for nonsense) and is a bit more strict (both logical because I spend more time with the boys during the week) but dad is always there also to comfort after a nightmare, when Kieran is crying, talking in his sleep or just restless and mum just turns over and keeps sleeping!

Now some words straight from Kieran.

Mum makes the nicest meals for instance, tomato salad! But also the maker of (too) spicy meals.
With her I can colour and do other creative things and she can read to me really well.
Dad is the keeper of the iPad on which I can play Talking Tom which I like very much!
And also I can climb on him and play fight with him.

And from my three new family members I received Simba (& Nala) as a gift, the Disney lions that I want to take everywhere and who are always with me during my favourite pastime "Sleeping!".
What I really like to do when I am tired from all the new impressions and new words!


What I dislike ...
Being dirty! Watching movies, because than I have to sit still for too long ... (we will see how I get on at school....) Strangers that start to talk to me, 'cause I can be quite shy sometimes.  I do not really care that much about sweets or most lollipops, rather a cookie.

Cold! Coold water, cold weather, then I say "Baridi".

What do I like ?
Milky tea & toast for breakfast (Yes, Hackett-family I am almost English)
Watching the "Ellen" show *,  listening to music and dancing. ( I have strong hip movements ;-)
Mango Juice in huge quantities! And crisps in all kinds of tastes.
Playing with water, bath / pool, as long as it is not too cold or hot!
Playing on the slide or swing.
I like butterflies and birds a little bit (at a safe distance) because anything that is bigger than my little finger and comes too close I do not like! (Goes espesciallly for dogs)
Who I also like is: Aunty Wilma, Aunty Ruth, Uncles Mike & Dick and Skyping with nanna.
(Other family certainly too, but I have not seen or talked to them so much yet).
And of course hugging my family and giving them wet sloppy kisses!

* Ellen DeGeneres is on M-net series, 1 of the 3 Digital Satellite TV channels we can receive.

So, now you know me a bit bettter !

When the judge tells us it is all alright in a couple of months than  I will see many of  you next year,
after I have been in a very big plane* very exciting!

* " Papa, mama, a really, big one!, Kieran go home" ...
(really no explanation necessary , but especially after Ruth and Wilma went home and we regularly see { smalll} aeroplanes).

No Internet - Geen Internet

Since Friday our connections seem to be buggered, both any wireless connections
 we had in the building and the broadband via the cable in the living room.

It seems to be the same problem in the whole building according to the Guru from 
IT who came last night, we were just the first to notice...

So Jane was at work in the office all day yesterday and now we are at Yaya,
 Dormans  to use their wireless.Unfortunately the laptop & Jane's work laptop do 
not respond to anything ....

Typing this on the Ipad which does not work great, that's why the spaces...

More hopefully later this week!

Sinds het weekend hebben we geen Internet in het gebouw.
De laptops doen het beide in geheel niet op welk netwerk dan ook...

En das erg lastig als je moet werken,
Jane is gister de hele dag naar kantoor geweest.In de avond kwam de IT Guru en hij weet het ook niet, het gehele gebouw is een probleem...
Alleen waren wij de eerste die het door hadden.

Nu even bij Yaya, Dormans op hun Wifi, maar dat werkt niet zo fantatstisch en alleen de Ipad werkt.

Hopelijk later in de week weer een blogpost!

't Regent, t regent, It's Raining cats & dogs

Zaterdag 3 november, 1200 hier (10.00 NL)
Het regent dus.

Sinds gisteren 16.00 buien, maar om 19.00 begon het pas echt.

Wind, donder & bliksem harde regen, de (donder) bui bleef 4 uur hangen en de regen is eigenlijk niet meer gestopt...

Vanaf circa 1900 geen stroom meer van het normale net.
Soms helemaal geen stroom, handig die lampjes en kaarsen!
De generator doet zn best, maar kan niet continu draaien door verschillende redenen oa brandstof.

Omdat we onderaan de weg wonen stroomt alles naar ons toe, richting de rivier.

TV valt af en toe weg.
Sinds gister geen Internet nu even bij de receptie waar er nu (half uurtje) wel even signaal is.
En dit is pas het begin van de 'kleine regentijd' we zijn benieuwd!

Maar goed de 3de verdieping is droog, koud is het niet, nu weer de jongens bezig gaan houden!

Saturday the 3rd november, 1200 here.
So, it is raining.

Since yesterday 16.00 some rain, but at 19.00 local time it really started.

Wind,thunder & lightning and hard rain, the (thunder) storm stayed for 4 hours and the rain really has not stopped.

From around 1900 no direct electricity anymore from the normal net.
Sometimes no power at all, luckily we have some  battery lights and candles!
The generator does it's best but can not run all the time due to different reasons, fuel for instance.

Because we live at the bottom of the road all the water comes down to us, to the river.

From yesterday we do not really have any Internet connection, now for hal an hour at the reception there seems to be a signal.(it is dry for the last 30 minutes)
The television works ocassionally.
And this is only the 'small rainseason', we will wait and see!

Anyway we are fine really it is dry at the 3rd floor, and is not cold, now I will go back up to keep the boys occupied!
