The morning of the third day of our I-WITNESS trip was marked by a visit to a Child Friendly School (CFS) located in Jali, on a hillside approximately 20 km from Kigali City. The Rubingo school is another school of the Child Friendly Schools (CFS) supported by our partner UNICEF, through the Schools for Africa programme.

At a quarter past nine we were expected by the staff of the Rubingo School. Despite the very bumpy road, we arrived at 9am. The teachers and students were visibly surprised by our early arrival, because they were still busy with the preparations for our visit. It took some little effort but soon the group of nine traditionally dressed students were mobilized to give us a very spectacular welcome. They sang and danced for us in a traditional way. For a moment I thought that I could probably take some pictures. However, I didn’t get any time for this because my hands were gripped by one of the students. The little boy involved me in their show. In one word: Goose-Flesh! The passion and the feeling of happiness was palpable at that moment!

The director, Jean de la Paix, of the Rubingo school gave us a very warm welcome and gave us some background information about the school. The school is a part of a community. This community is one of the poorest communities in the country. Primary education is free, but a school uniform and exercise books must be purchased by parents or family. Therefore Rubingo school takes special measures and initiatives to support families bringing their children to the school. These include financial transfers and job creation in the public sector, so that income can be generated. 'Rubingo school is special’ said the director. ‘We address the needs of the most vulnerable children in many different ways’.

Rubingo School was selected as a pilot for the Child Friendly School program because of the number of 'vulnerable children' in the community. At present the primary school has 1100 students, 30 of them are vulnerable* children and need extra attention. This extra attention is provided by six teachers who have all followed special training. They can assist this vulnerable group and give them additional support where needed.(* think of handicaps like being blind or deaf )

The school works closely together with the community authorities and parents that bring their children to the school. So they can indentify vulnerable children, but also encourage eachother to bring their children to school.  For every class is a representative parent who will contact the other parents if there are any issues. Once if a student fails to show up  several days for any reason, the representative will contact the parents of students for information what is going on and see if there are any possibilities to help.

Overall, a fantastic base in my opinion! After hearing his presentation, we visited some of the lower classes. Many of my colleague social ambassadors mixed, with the youngest students to join their lessons, just like me.

New sanitary building

After the visit we continued our way to see the new sanitary building. They have separated facilities (Boys/Girls). There are large watertanks placed with the support of UNICEF. So after the a visit of the sanitary facilities, children can wash their hands.

The Rubingo School has a new pilot project. A freestanding wall with a several 'non-affiliated' watertaps. The students of the Rubingo School learn how to install, repair or replace a watertap. So they can teach their parents or put into practice at their own homes.

Before we finished our visit , our group was invited to follow different lessons. Together with Karlijn van der Meer, I was assigned to a class with 30 pupils , aged about 10 years to 13 years. We read from the English book 'A snake with no legs`. One by one the students read a paragraph of the first five pages of the book. When they finished the teacher reads the pages again with special attention to the pronounciation, so that the students can hear the right way to pronounce. The next assignment for the students was based on a number of words that are written on the black board. They had to find the words in the text of the story. After that the children may ask questions. The teacher answered the questions extensively, mentioned synonyms and asked for the meaning in Kinyarwanda. A very inspiring lesson. The energy and the passion of the teacher can be an example for all teachers.

At the end of our visit we were introduced to all the teachers, and there was time to answer mutual questions.

Our group was very curious and had many questions for the staff and teachers. They answered them all! It is noticeable that the Rubingo school is very open to reasonable criticism. They are open to the fact that we 'together' work on the "best" future for all children in the community!.

Een school met een missie!.

Om kwart over 9 werden we verwacht door de directie van de Rubingo School. Ondanks het zeer onregelmatige wegdek arriveerden we al om 9 uur, dit tot verbazing van de leraren en kinderen die nog druk bezig waren met de voorbereidingen van ons bezoek. Het kostte wat kleine inspanning maar al snel was er een groepje van negen verklede leerlingen gemobiliseerd en ging het feest van start. Zingend en dansend kwam de groep ons tegemoet. In een fractie bedacht mij dat ik wellicht een mooie foto kon maken. Veel tijd kreeg ik echter niet, want mijn handen werden vast gepakt door één van de leerlingen en al dansend werd ik bij de show betrokken. In één woord: Kippenvel!! De passie en het gevoel van geluk op dat moment was voelbaar!

De directeur, Jean de la Paix, van de Rubingo school heette ons welkom en gaf ons enige achtergrond informatie over de school. De community waar binnen de school valt behoort tot één van de armste communities die Rwanda kent. Basisonderwijs is gratis, maar een schooluniform en schriften moeten worden aangeschaft door de ouders of familie. Er worden dan ook diverse initiatieven ondernomen om er voor te zorgen dat de kinderen binnen deze community ook een kans krijgen onderwijs te volgen. Te denken valt aan financiële tegemoetkomingen en het creëren van werkgelegenheid binnen de publieke sector zodat er binnen de familie inkomen gegenereerd kan worden. ‘ Rubingo school is speciaal’ zegt de directeur. We brengen de behoefte in kaart van de meest ‘kwetsbare’ kinderen.

 Rubingo School was geselecteerd als ‘pilot’ voor het Child Friendly programma vanwege het aantal ‘kwetsbare kinderen’ binnen de community. Op dit moment telt de school zo’n 1100 leerlingen, waarvan ongeveer 30 kwetsbare kinderen extra aandacht behoeven. Deze extra aandacht wordt verzorgd door 6 leraren die allen speciaal onderwijs hebben gevolgd zodat zij deze kwetsbare groep extra kunnen begeleiden en ondersteunen waar nodig.

 Ook werkt de school nauw samen met de ‘ouders’ binnen de community in de hoop dat zij elkaar stimuleren hun kinderen naar school te laten gaan. Elke klas heeft 1 ouder als aanspreekpunt. Mocht een leerling om welke reden meerdere dagen verzuimen, dan zal het aanspreekpunt bij de ouders van leerling gaan informeren wat er aan de hand is en bekijken of er mogelijk gewerkt kan worden aan een oplossing.

 Kortom, een fantastische basis in mijn ogen! Na zijn verhaal te hebben aangehoord bezoeken we enkele lagere klassen. Veel van mijn social-ambasador collega’s mengen zich net als ik tussen de kinderen om kennis te maken met de ‘jongste’ leerlingen van de Rubingo School.

We vervolgen onze weg langs de nieuwe sanitaire voorzieningen. Ze zijn gescheiden. Het sanitair van de jongens staat links naast de school, dat van de meisjes aan de rechterkant. Samen met UNICEF is het sanitair voorzien van grote watertanken. Na het sanitair bezoek kunnen de kinderen dus hun handen wassen.

 Bij het toilet van de meisjes bevindt zich een ‘pilot’. Aan een vrijstaand muurtje zijn diverse ‘niet- aangesloten’ kranen gemonteerd. De leerlingen van de Rubingo School leren op deze manier hoe ze een waterkraan moeten monteren, repareren of vervangen zodat ze dit thuis kunnen leren aan hun ouders of in de praktijk kunnen brengen. Een goed doordacht initiatief!

Voor we ons bezoek afsluiten, worden we uitgenodigd een schoolles te volgen. Samen met Karlijn van der Meer word ik ingedeeld bij een leesklasje van zo’n 30 leerlingen in de leeftijd van ongeveer 10 jaar- 13 jaar. We lezen uit het engelse boekje ‘A snake without no leggs’. Één voor één lezen de leerlingen een alinea voor van de eerste 5 bladzijde van het boekje. Vervolgens leest de docente het stuk nogmaals voor en let hierbij op uitspraak zodat de leerlingen hier een voorbeeld aan kunnen nemen. De eerste opdracht die volgt is gebaseerd op een aantal woorden die op het school bord zijn geschreven. De leerlingen moeten in de tekst opzoeken waar de worden gebruikt worden. Vervolgens mogen de kinderen vragen stellen. De docente beantwoordt de vragen uitgebreid, verzint synoniemen en vraagt vervolgens naar de betekenis in het Kinyarwanda. Een zeer inspirerende les. De energie en de passie waarmee de les wordt gegeven kunnen een voorbeeld zijn voor alle docenten.

Als afsluiting ontmoeten we alle docenten, volgt er een kennismaking en kunnen er vragen gesteld worden. Vanuit onze groep wordt hier uitgebreid gebruik van gemaakt en op alles volgt een antwoord. Het is merkbaar dat de Rubingo school zeer openstaat voor onderbouwde kritieken. Ze staan open voor het feit dat we ‘samen’ werken aan de ‘beste’ toekomst voor allen kinderen in de community!.
