Wat hebben we allemaal gedaan de afgelopen maand/weken ?
De laatste loodjes wat betreft de procedure, zie hiervoor de pagina tijdslijn en later Procedure 3B,
(Timeline Adoption Procedure Kenya) maar natuurlijk ook nog andere dingen!
Veel dingen hebben we al beschreven in de andere stukjes tussen de vorige Dagelijks Leven, en Update en nu wat er nog 'over' blijft, 't wordt nu soms wat lastiger om "inspiratie" te vinden" ;-)
- De Boma's of Kenya bezocht - een mooi 'dorp' met de verschillende hutten zoals die door allerlei stammen hier worden gemaakt en gebruikt en afsluitend een dans, muziek en acrobatenshow.
- Bij Moonflower, Palacina gegeten met Luc, Inne en Noah voor de Pasen.
- En ook op een ochtend naar de T-Mall waar een "arcade" is, allerlei (betaalde) spelletjes zoals flipperkasten en andere (kermis) spelen wat de jongens (we waren met zn 3en) best leuk vonden!
In April-Mei is het tijd voor de 'grote regens' zoals men hier wel zegt, maar dat valt (tot nu toe) erg mee vinden wij, en het is in ieder geval nooit 'echt koud' teminste ik hou het gewoon bij korte broek en korte mouwen. Wel regent het wat meer overdag (meestal is het einde van de middag en in de avond/nacht dat het echt stort!) We merken dat we iets minder zwemmen, (want vaker bewolkt dus geen zon om in te zitten en het zwemwater is dan wel kouder) de jongens zwemmen 2x per week op school buiten en ik (Peter) mocht niet zwemmen met m'n 'teennagel'.
Als er een stevige bui is dan valt wel het signaal van de (sateliet) TV weg en ook zijn er regelmatig stroomstoringen en dus geen internet, maar dat is al redelijk normaal ;-)
Voor onze trouwdag, alvast, gingen we zondag 21 April eten bij Mediterraneo, Junction, een leuk en erg groot Italiaans restaurant. Wilma logeerde al bij ons en reed mee met Luc, Inne en Noah mee die er ook bij waren. Mike, Dick en Stella kwamen ook mee en we hadden dus een gezellige groep bij elkaar!
Op onze daadwerkelijke trouwdag (19 jaar alweer!, 23 April) waren de jongens op school en gingen we voor een snelle lunch samen naar Art Caffe wat erg leuk was om het te 'vieren'.
Ondertussen moeten we hier ook maar eens wat gaan opruimen, na 9 maanden hebben we toch wel een en 't ander verzameld aan "rommel": kranten, tijdschriften en schoolwerkjes en 'souveniers' door de jongens verzameld. Ook al hebben beide zussen bij bezoek wel al spullen mee terug genomen naar Nederland...
We kunnen straks 8 x 23 kilo meenemen aan bagage (en je zou denken dat genoeg moet zijn) maar we zullen het zien!
We hebben al wat dozen en doosjes klaar staan om weg te geven aan het kindertehuis, personeel van het apartement waar we wonen etc.
Zaterdag hadden we een dagje bos in Nairobi, we gingen met Inne, Luc en Noah naar Karura Forest waar zij al eerder waren geweest. Met een gids liepen we door het bos (grootste 'bos' in Kenia met 1031 hectare) en klommen naar de waterval en zagen de grotten en holle bomen waar de strijders voor onafhankelijkheid (Mau-Mau strijders) zich verborgen tijdens de gevechten. Na deze stevige wandeling gingen we voor een wel verdiende lunch naar River Cafe.
Koninginnendag in Nairobi!
Dit was erg leuk want we vierden het met de jongens en andere kinderen en ouders op de Nederlandse school. Vanaf 09.00 tot 13.00 was er een programma vol met activiteiten en hapjes!
('s middags toen we thuis kwamen was het nogal een anti climax voor mij, Jane moest werken en van een Koninginnedag gevoel was geen sprake meer, waar zijn de bitterballen en Heineken als je ze nodig hebt ;-)
Na het koekhappen, touwtje-envelopje trekken en eendje vissen, was het tijd voor de kinderen om "hun koningslied te zingen; iets wat door de NOS live werd uitgezonden op de TV! (zie filmpje onderaan)
De Ambassadeur Joost Reintjes kwam een korte speech geven en deelde als kado een spel uit, leuk!
(oh, en hij had ook nog oranje tompouzen meegenomen, als de visa ook zo snel en goed gaan :-)))
Daarna was het naar 1 van de 2 'tv- zalen' voor het live verslag via BVN om de Abdicatie en Balkonscene te kijken, wat ook in Nairobi enthousiast ontvangen werd. (4000 Nederlanders in Kenia er waren er 140)
De ochtend werd afgesloten met poffertjes, niet slecht, en friet voor alle kleine en grote kinderen en een zwaar gesponsorde Rad van Fortuin waar we bloembollen mee wonnen. En (natuurlijk) hadden we de gehele tijd weer, mooi weer!

04 en 05 mei.
Herdenken en ook het vieren van onze vrijheid is een groot goed. Ook om even stil te staan bij al die mensen die hun leven lieten om ons, ons leven in vrijheid te laten leven. Wij krijgen hiervan niet zoveel mee, natuurlijk, maar het zijn (naar mijn mening) ook belangrijke dagen voor Nederland en de Nederlanders 'over zee'. We gaan proberen of we de 2 minuten stilte mee kunnen beleven via de computer / of BVN via uitzending gemist.
Ook vandaag, op 04 mei, hadden we weer een samenzijn met de andere Internationale Adoptie ouders bij de New Muthaiga Mall. Er is daar een groot terras en verschillende kinder speeltoestellen.
Ook al was het een beetje bewolkt gingen we er toch heen, we denken dat het de laaste keer is dat we 'iedereen' zullen zien! Een aantal mensen volgen we met hun Blog (Thompsons, Luc en Inne) en anderen op Facebook of via email, maar het is toch ook wel leuk om ook hier iedereen af en toe eens te zien.
En een onverwachte bonus! Via Facebook volg ik GADO (van de cartoons) en GADO en Myrobi hebben samen besloten een aantal T-shirts te maken die vandaag in exclusieve verkoop gingen!
(denk aan Fokke & Sukke in Nederland qua onderwerpen, politiek & maatschappij kritisch)
James, een van de vaste chauffeurs, vond het goed om Matt & Mij bij het adres te droppen en in een lift zonder licht gingen we naar de 3de verdieping.Daar aangekomen vroeg George, van de T-shirts, of we GADO een hand wilden geven! Nu, dat wilden we wel! Na een praatje en 3 T-shirts in blik verder gingen we erg tevreden naar huis!
Morgen vroeg opstaan, want dan gaan Matthew & ik naar de mis met Luc,Inne, & Noah, meer later!

Hello everyone, Beginning of May 2013, Nairobi
What have we done the last weeks/month ?
The last steps in the long Kenya procedure, see for this the page Timeline Procedure and also the post, still to come, Procedure 3B (Timeline Adoption Procedure Kenya) but also other things of course!
We have written about many things already in the last Daily Life and Update.
The boys had their Easter holidays, and apart from our trip to the coast, we have also done some things locally:
- The Boma's of Kenya - a great 'village' with the different huts form all different tribes that can be found in this country and finished off with a dance, music and acrobatic show.
- We had a meal at Moonflower, Palacina with Luc, Inne and Noah for Easter.
- With the boys I also went to the T-Mall where there is a games arcade and we played on different "boy things" and we had a good time!
In April-May it is the time for the "main rain season" but up to now we think there's not a lot too it at least in Nairobi; it is never really cold, and we an all still wear short sleeves and shorts. It does rain a bit more also in the day, (usually the rain comes in the late afternoon, evening and at night) and sometimes there is a big rain storm for an hour.
We do notice that we swim less nowadays (because it is more cloudy, less sun, so not so great to sit outside and the water is colder). The boys still swim twice a week outside at school and I (Peter) could not swim because of my toe. If there is a big downpour the signal of the (satellite) TV will disappear and there are a lot of powercuts which means no Internet, but we seem to find this normal nowadays ;-)
For our wedding anniversary, we went for a meal at Mediterraneo at Junction on Sunday 21st April, a nice and very big Italian restaurant. Wilma, my sister, stayed with us and got a ride with Luc, Inne and Noah who were also present, as were Mike, Dick and Stella. We were a nice group together.
On our actual wedding anniversary (19 years already! on the 23rd of April) the boys were at school and we went for a quick lunch to the Art Caffe which was nice to 'celebrate'.
Meanwhile we have started clearing things up here, after 9 months we have "collected" different things like newspapers, magazines, several kinds of artwork from the boys. Although both my sisters have taken a lot of things back home to the Netherlands we still have a lot of stuff. We can take 8 bags at 23 kgs of luggage with us (and you would think that is enough) but we have to see about that!
We already have some boxes ready to give away to the Children's home, staff here at Brookview etcetera.
Saturday we had a day in the forest in Nairobi, with Inne, Luc and Noah; we went to Karura Forest where they had been before. With a guide we walked through the forest (the biggest stretch of forest in Kenya at 1031 sq hectares) and we climbed to the waterfall, saw the caves and hollow trees where the (Mau-Mau) freedom fighters hid before the independence. After this walk of 2 hours we went for a well deserved lunch to the River Cafe.
Koninginnendag - Queen's Day (the Queens Birthday celebrations) in Nairobi!
This was a lot of fun because we celebrated it with the boys and other Dutch families at the Dutch school. There was a program from 9am - 1pm full of activities and food. (In the afternoon when we came home it was quite an anti climax for me; Jane had to do some work and there was no Queen's Day atmosphere any more - where are the meatballs and Heineken when you want them?)
This was also a very special Queen's Day as Queen Beatrix chose this day to abdicate the throne after 33 years (she is now 75) in favour of her son. So The Netherlands now has a new King, Willem Alexander, Queen Maxima and 3 lovely princesses - 9 year old Amalia the new Crown Princess, Alexia and Ariane. In the future, King's Day will be celebrated on 27th April, Willem Alexander's birthday.
After some traditional old-fashioned Dutch games at school, it was time for the children to sing their 'king's song', which was filmed by a Dutch new crew who were present, and it was broadcast live on TV in The Netherlands. The Dutch Ambassador to Kenya, Joost Reinthes was also there, he gave a speech and gave every family a board game as a gift, which was really nice. He also brough traditional orange cakes - let's hope the visa applicaiton also goes as smoothly and well as this day.
Then we went into one of the 2 'tv-rooms' where the abdication ceremony and balcony scene were broadcast live via BVN and accessed via satellite here. This was very well received in Nairobi (there are 4,000 Dutch people in Kenya and about 140 of them at school to celebrate this). The morning was rounded off with poffertjes (tiny pancakes with butter and sugar) and french fries for everyone and there was a very-heavily sponsored wheel of fortune/lottery in which we won some flower bulbs. And fortunately we had great weather the whole time.

4th and 5th of May in the Netherlands: on these dates we remember those who died in the wars and celebrate our freedom (from German occupation). Also it is good to take a minute (2 minutes of silence) to think of all the people who lost their lives, to give us a life of freedom. It's not so easy to be involved here of course, but I think that it is just as important to take a moment and remember these occasions as all the orange parties celebrating "Queens Day" - the 30th of April. We will see if we can follow anything via live stream or afterwards a recorded program.
Also today, on the 4th of May we have another get together with the other International Adoption parents at the New Muthaiga Mall. It has a big terrace, a field and a playgound for the kids. Even though it is a bit cloudy at the moment we will go there later, we think that it might be the last time that we see 'everybody'! A few we will follow on their blog (Thompsons, Luc and Inne) and others on Facebook or via email, but is also good to meet up with people and swap stories and compare notes.
And a unexpected bonus! Via Facebook I follow GADO (of the Cartoons) and GADO & Myrobi have joined to produce some T-shirts went on an exclusive sale today!
GADO make political, critical in amongst others the Daily Nation and East African newspapers.
James, one of our regular drivers, agreed to drop Matt & Me at the address and in an elevator without light we went to the 3rd floor.George, who sold the T-shirts was there and asked if we wanted to meet GADO!
Yes, of course! So after a short conversation and 3 T-shirts in a can later we went home very happy!
Tomorrow is an early day, because Matthew & me will go to mass with Luc,Inne & Noah, more later!
