Over van alles en ook nog wat - Update, a bit about everything

Hallo Allemaal,                                    Nairobi 19 april 2013

Gisteren kregen we dan eindelijk weer eens een stukje goed nieuws vanuit onze advocaat.
De Adoption Order is binnen en hij stuurde deze door, gedateerd op 17-04-2013.
In principe had dit, gewoonlijk een week na de uitspraak moeten zijn op 11-04 dus.
We hebben nu de uitspraak van de rechter zwart op wit dat we naar Keniaans recht een zoon hebben, die Kieran Kuyanda Rison heet!  Nu is het wachten nog op het 2de formulier het Adoption Certificate wat vaak langer duurt...

Daarna kunnen we een Keniaans paspoort aanvragen en naar de Nederlandse Ambassade voor alle formaliteiten daar...

Dusse, we hopen natuurlijk nog steeds in Mei, maar het schuift wel steeds meer op naar de 'visa datum'.
Als het zover is, en de vlucht is geboekt, dan natuurlijk meer nieuws hier! We hopen wel op een rustige kennismaking van Kieran met zijn nieuwe woonplaats en huis, en zullen dus daarom kiezen voor een andere aankomst dan met Matthew een aantal jaar geleden.

Ondertussen in Nairobi, wat gebeurt er nog meer ?  We hebben wat technische problemen, de Acer notepad wil nu echt niets meer doen, en buiten werktijd gebruik ik Jane haar laptop, ik heb de:

We zijn nog naar Toi Market geweest, om voor Kieran een Keniaanse voetbal outfit te kopen en hebben zo al wat "souveniers en herinneringen" verzameld om mee terug te nemen.

Matthew is geheel verslingerd aan zijn (gedeeltelijk zelfverdiende) iPod die tante Wilma mee bracht voor zijn verjaardag en moet er af en toe van los getrokken worden om andere ook wel belangrijke zaken te doen als eten en slapen. Hij is in ieder geval erg blij om weer naar school te gaan na de 2 weekjes Paasvakantie !

We proberen hier te werken aan begrip bij de Kenianen over hoe de adoptie procedure werkt, dat het allemaal goed geregeld is en een serieuze aangelegenheid! en mensen voorzichtig mee te delen dat we toch hopen binnen een maand weg te gaan.

Er zijn een aantal mensen die nu eenmaal gewend zijn ons bijna dagelijks te zien en hun inkomen hangt deels af van ons gebruik van hun diensten. (De taxi's - was- en schoonmaak dames - krantenman - bloemenman)

We moeten nadenken over het Kwaheri - afscheid van de jongens op school en de laatste betalingen regelen, schoolgeld en schoolbus.  Ook Kieran begint zijn draai te vinden in de klas, in het begin waren het vooral Saskia en Janelle wat we aan namen hoorden als hij thuis kwam (als bieb/vrijwillige ouder ken ik de meeste kinderen wel). Nu is ook Ben toegevoegd aan dit rijtje. Onze jongens spelen nu regelmatig met Owen (groep 4) en zijn broertje Ben (groep1) en Owen is ook al eens hier geweest, het kan straks nog wel even lastig worden om Tot Ziens te zeggen...

Ondertussen hebben we, ik Pickwick Dutch Tea blend drinkend, het intervieuw met het nieuwe Koningspaar grotendeels gezien via Uitzending Gemist, want we moeten wel een beetje op de hoogte blijven! Als onderdeel van het Oranje comite in Nairobi ;-)

Dan zal ik wel weer 'normaal' lopen verwacht ik, want ben geholpen aan een ingegroeide teennagel.

Jane ondertussen werkt weer gewoon lekker door na haar weekje vakantie, veel telefoontjes en ook regelmatig in de avond door het tijdsverschil met, vooral Amerika. Maar ze weet nog een paar weken volle kracht en dan breekt voor haar de 'rustige' tijd aan. Als we terug zijn zal ze wat (adoptie) verlof opnemen.

We hebben nu een leuk, voor ons best "druk" weekend om naar uit te kijken.  Vanavond komt Tante Wilma weer naar Nairobi met Mike (om zondag naar Nederland te vliegen), we hebben een borrel bij een nieuwe (Europese) collega van Jane die hier is komen werken - Zaterdag koffie met andere adoptie ouders om aantekeningen te vergelijken ;-) en Matthew heeft een verjaardagsfeestje van een klasgenootje (ouders welkom) - en dan de Zondag!

Op Zondag is er een speciale dienst voor Kieran bij Church on the Rock - Grace Children's Center en nemen we met de jongens afscheid van het tehuis waar hij bijna 4 jaar gewoond heeft.  We hopen dit te doen met Wilma & Mike en ook Luc & Inne hopen daar bij te zijn. (Meer over de dienst later  in Religion een stukkie wat er ook nog aan komt).  Daarna willen we gaan lunchen met zijn allen om het een hele leuke middag te maken.

Wij, Jane en/of ik zullen nog wel een keer terug gaan naar Grace omdat we de kleren en speelgoed hier willen doneren voordat we weggaan. Maar dat zal een kort bezoekje worden zonder Kieran en Matthew.

Goed, we hopen dat eenieder nu weer een beetje op de hoogte is van alle belangrijke en minder belangrijke zaken en alvast een goed weekend gewenst!

Hello everyone,                                                                      Nairobi 19th april 2013

Yesterday we finally got some good news from our lawyer.  The Adoption Order has been granted, dated 17th April 2013.  In principle this should have been ready a week after the judgement, on 11th April but he told us that due to 'aftermath of the elections' it was delayed.  We now have the court's decision in black and white that we have adopted Kieran Kuyanda Rison for the Kenyan law.  Now we need to wait for the second document, the Adoption Certificate which usually takes longer; he said we would have it by next Friday, so we will see....

After that we can apply for a Kenyan passport and once we have that, go to the Dutch Embassy for all the formalies there (visa for Netherlands, temporary residence permit).

So, we are still hoping to be home in May, but the date is shifting ever closer to the expiry of our visas again, on 14th May.  When we get to that point and the flights are booked, we will post it here.  We are planning a quiet home coming to let Kieran get used to his new home and environment in peace, and will therefore plan a different arrival than we had with Matthew a few years ago. 

In the meantime in Nairobi, what else is happening?  We've had some technical problems, the Acer notepad doesn't work at all any more so outside Jane's working hours I use her laptop.  I have updated the following pages:

We have been to Toi Market again, we really recommend it for affordable clothes, to get Kieran a Kenyan football kit and have collected some souvenirs to take home too.

Matthew is totally addicted to his (partially self-paid for) iPod which Aunty Wilma brought with her from Holland (ordered from England) which he got for his birthday, and sometimes he has to be dragged away from it for important matters such as eating and sleeping :-)  He is also really happy to be back at school after the 2 week Easter holiday.

We are trying to work on helping Kenyan people understand how the adoption procedure works, that it is all very well organised and is a serious business even if it takes a long time.  We are carefully preparing the people we have contact with, to get used to the idea that we are hoping to leave within a month. 

There are a number of people we have become used to seeing every day and whose income we have supported these last few months - the taxi drivers, the cleaners here who earn from us by doing our laundry, and to a lesser extent the newspaper seller out on the street and the man selling flowers on the corner.
We also have to think about 'Kwaheri' - the ceremonial 'goodbye' at school for the boys, and making the last payments for school and the school bus.  Kieran is just beginning to get used to being at school and will have to leave his new friends behind - to start with he talked about Saskia and Janelle (as library dad and volunteer at school I know most children).  But now he is also good friends with Ben who started in his class recently, whose elder brother Owen is in Matthew's class and the 4 boys play together regularly.  It will be hard for both boys to say goodbye when the time comes :-( 

This weel we also watched the interview on Dutch TV (via internet) with the Dutch Prince Willem-Alexander (and his wife Princess Maxima), who will take over the throne in The Netherlands on 30th April when Queen Beatrix abdicates after 33 years.  We need to get back into the news and what is happening back home! This is a big event of course and the Dutch school is organising a party that day, with games and Dutch food and a big screen where we can all go and watch the abdication and crowning of King Willem-Alexander live.  So that will be a good day. 
Hopefully I will be able to walk normally again by then, as I have had some surgery on an ingrowing toe nail (more in Dangerous Nairobi - Safety & Security).

In the meantime Jane is also still working, back after our week's holiday at the coast.  She's busy, is on the phone a lot especially in the evenings due to the time difference with her colleagues particularly those inthe US.  But in a few weeks she will move into a quieter time, as she will take a lot of (adoption) leave when we get back home.

We have got a busy, but fun weekend ahead.  This evening Aunty Wilma is returning to Nairobi with Mike (she will fly back to The Netherlands on Sunday evening), we also have a housewarming party to go to of one of Jane's new colleagues in the office here, who has moved from Europe).  On Saturday some other adoption parents are coming for coffee to compare notes - they are hoping to fly home next week so we are just behind them in the process and can surely learn something from them. And Saturday afternoon Matthew is going to a pirate-themed birthday party of a classmate.  Then Sunday!
On Sunday there is a special service for Kieran at Church on the Rock - the church affiliated with his children's home, Grace Children's Center.  It's a 'Dedication' service, similar to what we know as a baptism.  It will also be the boys' opportunity to say goodbye to all the children there so will be emotional.  But we are taking cakes (for 90!) and hope to make it as fun as possible.  Mike and Wilma are also coming with us and our Belgian friends Luc and Inne with their new son, so it will be great to have some support and friendly faces in the congregation. (More about the service later in a post around religion).  We will round off the festivities with a lunch at restaurant Mediterraneo in Nairobi and hope to have a fun, memorable afternoon. 
We, Jane and I, will go back to Grace one more time just before we leave, to donate Kieran's clothes and toys but it will be just a short visit without Kieran and Matthew.
