Hallo Allemaal, september 2012 Nairobi
Er zijn er 2 die hun vaste standplaats voor onze deur hebben Dennis & James. Beiden zijn vriendelijk, okay qua (vaste!) prijs en we hebben hun kaartje & dus telefoonnummers. {We hebben de heren laten weten dat we hier voor langere tijd zijn en dus een redelijke bron van inkomsten kunnen zijn, dus een redelijke prijs & we maken gebruik van je diensten!}
'sMiddags lunch, Jane heeft een korte lunchpauze dus soms samen even naar buiten in de tuin of Kieran en ik samen een broodje eten & Juice. ( Siroop / Vimto)
TV: we hebben (voor de luxe begrippen) een beperkt aantal zenders die soms wisselend te zien zijn;

Hello everyone, 13th September 2012 Nairobi
How are we all doing now as a family now that we are more or less settled?
Here is more-or-less chronological summary of our days during the week.
In the morning the boys are out of bed first (Matthew), daddy who sleeps light is awake then too. Everything happens one floor here (no upstairs/downstairs) with all the doors open so it's quite noisy.
Daddy makes a cup of tea (chai) for the whole family and coffee for himself. This is followed by breakfast (during which Kieran eats as much as his older brother). Mama is then usually awake too and makes the school lunch.
After getting dressed we wait for the school bus (Toyota* van) which can turn up any time between 7.45am and 8.30am and yes, school begins at 8.20am. Allan, the driver and Margaret, the escort can only say one thing, 'the traffic is terrible'. (Which is true, but pick-up should be before 8am).
* You see the slogan here "the car in front of you is a Toyota", which is usually true. there are a lot of 4WD Nissans, Subarus, a lot of Landrovers (all types) and a bit of European representation in the form of BMW X5, a few (older style) Mercedes' and the occasional Peugeot.
Toyota has the biggest importer, the most spare parts and is therefore easiest to upkeep. That's all I have to say about cars right now, seeing I know nothing about them ;-)
Jane, who has started working again, gets her working area in the lounge ready and starts the computer. I keep Kieran occupied with his blocks and train.
After a while the 2 of us go out* (Twende Zetu, Let's Go!). We go for walks, Kieran isn't much of a walker yet but will have to learn! As a family we walk quite a lot. Kenyans walk everywhere too all the time and what goes for them goes for us too - it saves a lot of money!
* The cleaner, Mary, comes every day; the apartments are serviced (like most in Nairobi) - they are cleaned daily and the bed linen and towels changed twice a week.
If we have heavy shopping then we take a taxi, usually with the same driver(s). There are 2 taxis stationed permanently in front of the building, Dennis and James; they are both friendly, don't charge bad prices and we have their cards and phone numbers. We have told both of them that we are here for a long time and could be a decent source of income for them, so if they charge us a reasonable price we will make use of their services.
At lunchtime Jane take a short break and we sometimes go outside for some fresh air to eat in the garden, just a sandwich and a drink, and sit in the sun for a while.
Sometimes Kieran needs to sleep for a while, he was used to that in the home and with all the waking he does with me, he often tells me after lunch that he is tired and wants to sleep - mimi choka (I am tired). He goes down really easily then mama can work in peace and I can go out for a walk or just sit and read or go on the iPad for a while. I am fairly familiar with everything in about a 5km radius now.
If it's sunny (it's always warm - in NL 10-20 degrees and Nairobi 14-26 degrees!) when Kieran is awake he and I go into the garden to play with the ball or swim. Kieran is becoming a real "swimming fish"* as he calls himself. Otherwise we play inside or read a book.
*Kieran is getting to be really brave in the water now and will jump in off the side as long as I hold him with one hand. The trust and bonding with daddy is going really well now.
Around 4pm Matthew is back from school and I continue playing with both boys. They are real brothers, baiting each other, taking things off each other but also being really sweet playing together and helping (Matthew > Kieran).
Then the working day is over, Jane's office 'closes' and she or I will cook. After the warm meal (in the beginning Kieran was always finished first but now we have to wait for both of them to finish - Kieran eats as much as Matthew and always finishes) we sit quietly and put the TV on or play a game. Then the boys go in the bath together which is the highlight of their day and lots of fun and always goes really well. There are usually discussion about the water which is either too hot or too cold. (For hot water we have to remember to put the water heater on an hour beforehand).
Then the evening routine: brushing teeth, reading a book with Kieran who goes to bed first then we read or play a game with Matthew and then he goes to bed.
Mom and dad are then worn out on the settee after the washing up! Another day over ;-)
No, not really. In the evening we usually read, watch some TV if there is anything on, update the blog or send some e-mails (depending on the WiFi) and in the weekend we have a glass of Kenyan wine from Lavasha.
For reading pleasure we have one of the papers: The Daily Nation, The Standard, Business Daily, or The Star
TV: we have (which is quite luxurious) a limited number of channels which are not always available:
KBC, NTV, KTN, K24 and Citizen TV (all Kenyan channels). We also have GBS which is religious in the weekends and via DStv (a south Afrian PayTV channel - although we don't actually get DStv) M-net Series (24 hour American series), BBC World and SuperSports 10 which is supposed to be a super sports channel but only broadcasts old football games instead.
For anyone who is interested I have made a page with recommendations, top right next to the symmary of all the blogs, with all kinds of informaton and internet links, of places to go and stay and eat and shop, around our area in Kilimani.
