=======================================================================
How are we, and in particular how is Kieran? Are questions that we often get asked.
We think we are all doing well. Kieran is a calm child though he can talk a lot, without saying exactly what he thinks about things. But it’s probably too early for anything deep, he’s not quite 5 and has had a lot of new impressions to process.

After a long month in England there were still a couple of weeks at home in Hoofddorp before school started. The good weather helped of course, with Kieran’s integration into his new surroundings, but it’s relative. In Nairobi it’s an average of 25 degrees all year round and sunny with the exception of the 2 rainy seasons, which vary even within the city.
Kieran is very keen to see snow, that’s a bit too soon and a lot to ask for in August, and I think there is a lot going for the different seasons and what each one brings for differences. (Hot chocolate after a snow shower, or a warm bath after being wet through in a rain shower). We put a small paddling pool in the garden and had various other outdoor toys that the boys could play with in the park opposite our house.
After Matthew, Kieran is now also infected with the ‘screen’virus, otherwise known as playing on the iPad or watching films, while Matthew loves to cycle outside (a lot!) and is usually outside playing, something he missed a lot in Kenya. Particularly the freedom to just cycle round the block, go to the playground alone or to the football park.
Kieran still has to get used to The Netherlands and Hoofddorp in that way; get to know the neighbourhood better then his freedom to play alone can also be increased. (The advantage is that Matthew has got 3 swimming certificates already (so could save himself if he fell in a stream) and knows a lot of people round here who also know him. But Kieran’s first challenge is to learn to ride a bike.
Other fun things that we have done as a family are the ‘Color Run’ in Utrecht, a 5km fun-run organized by the TV channel NET 5 and Plan (formerly ‘Foster Parents Plan).
Also thanks to my colleagues at IKEA who gave us tickets, we spent a day at the Linnaeushof (Europe’s largest playground) which was a great day. Kieran loved the slides (also water slides) especially. Matthew loves anything with speed, in particular the race cars which he can now go in alone.
Even chopping down trees in the garden (after a year of neglect it was a bit wild!) was fun, with Aunty Wilma followed by a barbecue. The boys also loved a morning out at the seaside (IJmuiden) even though it was VERY windy!
And now back to ‘normality’ again, as real life has started again. Papa is working of course, including some evening and weekend shifts. Mama works at the office in the morning and is at home for lunch, and after school, working at home in the afternoons. Both boys are back at school now, Kieran in Group 2, Matthew in Group 5. And we will see what the coming weeks bring. In any case till the autumn half term holidays things are pretty clear.
