Terug in Hoofddorp, Nederland - Back in The Netherlands

Ja, Kieran vond het de eerste dagen wel een beetje koud...

Tja, en toen was het  "back to Life, back to reality"  ;-)
Teminste voor Matthew en mijzelf wel weer snel!
Matthew is maandag 27 mei weer naar de Wegwijzer school gegaan in groep 4 bij veel bekende kinderen.
Hij heeft al veel vriendjes over gehad om te spelen en voelt zich al weer aardig thuis hier, gelukkig maar!
(Het afscheid, tot in het vliegtuig en nog na aankomst was nogal verdrietig voor Matthew...)
Maar fietsen en bijna onbeperkt buiten spelen maakt veel goed!

Ook was het Welkom Thuis (slingers, bloemen en kaartjes van de familie en buurvrouw en later nog meer bloemen van vrienden en veel meer kaarten van iedereen) en persoonlijke groeten van veel mensen natuurlijk fijn!

We hebben ook wat spulletjes meegenomen uit Kenia... Souveniers, kadootjes en eea voor de kamers van de jongens.

De maandag ging ik op gesprek bij mijn werkgever, IKEA BV, om te horen wat de bedoeling was.
En vanaf dinsdag werk ik bij  Customer Relations (Klanten Service), toen meteen een vergadering, de volgende dag op de vloer {effe wennen} en daarna op donderdag een dagje hoofdkantoor.  Komende week een redelijk normale werkweek voor mij.

Ik ben erg gelukkig dat dit mogelijk was en ik nog steeds een baan heb bij een goede organisatie waar fijne mensen werken.

Kieran mocht eerst een weekje thuis wennen en de buurt verkennen met Jane en dan maandag 03 juni ook naar school, dezelfde als Matthew.

Hij vindt het allemaal nog een beetje 'overweldigend', maar went snel,bijvoorbeeld:
Onderaan de trap staand: "wat is daarboven dan, wie woont daar ?" en hetzelfde bij de zoldertrap...
Inderdaad we hebben iets meer ruimte dan in het 2 kamer appartement in Nairobi, als je daar in het midden stond kon je alles wel overzien, wat zeker ook zn charme had. 

Zijn favoriete dingen in huis zijn: TV kijken ! (Woezel en Pip, Charlie en Lola, en Postman Pat) en zich verkleden met van alles en nog wat, en alle verschillende smaken proberen van 'hagelslag' en (nu het zonniger wordt) steppen buiten op de stoep en onder toeziend oog in het park.

Omdat we het huis verhuurd hadden moeten we wel eea weer terughalen uit de opslag en wat reparaties regelen. Nu  na ruim een week zijn we nu weer redelijk ingericht en staat veel weer op de juiste plaats.
We kwamen er achter dat we (natuurlijk) ontzettend veel spullen hebben en vooral erg veel speelgoed!
Beide heren hebben hun eigen slaapkamer nu, wat ze allebei wel fijn vinden, vooral Matthew (Kieran vond en vind het wel gezellig ;-) met hun "eigen spullen".

Maar we moesten nog wel eea verplaatsen en vervangen om  het 'af' te maken voor Matthew, Kieran heeft de "oude" kamer van Matthew die wat opgefrist is en wat van 'zijn eigen spulletjes' erin heeft.
Matthew heeft nu een andere kamer met een nieuw bed! 
(het is ook voor ons soms een beetje zoeken naar de juiste balans voor beide jongens...
Kieran vindt bijna alles leuk en voor hem is bijna alles nieuw..., Matthew is zich er erg bewust van dat Kieran de nieuweling is en dus meer aandacht krijgt van veel mensen...
Of wel Matthew heeft een eigen kamer, waar hij veel uitgekozen heeft wat betreft inrichting en Kieran heeft spulletjes en speeltjes)

Jawel, toch een beetje Kenia ! 

Jane is degene die nu verlof heeft en straks wat minder werkt als Kieran naar school gaat.

Dus tijd voor Kieran en Matthew om met ze te spelen en ze te helpen bij het wennen aan school en elkaar hier.  En ook nog wat tijd om het huis op te ruimen en de tuin weer wat terug te snoeien. 

Met  Kieran gaat het eigenlijk heel erg goed, misschien wel te goed (maar daar zijn we adoptie ouders voor)

maar tot nu toe is hij erg blij en enthousiast met en over bijna alles.

Hij wil erg graag naar school toe en vind de treinen (we wonen dichtbij het station) en de vliegtuigen (ook Schiphol Airport is dichtbij) fantastisch en schreeuwt het uit van plezier elke keer dat hij 1 van de 2 ziet.

We zullen zien hoe het verder gaat natuurlijk, het besef dat zijn leven voorgoed en drastisch veranderd is zal misschien nog wel een beetje in moeten zinken...

Kieran lekker buiten, het mooiere weer en vooral de zon is wel fijn, het weer is van de dingen waar hij aan zal moeten wennen. Wij trouwens ook! (We gingen weg met de zon en hebben bijna 10 maanden bijna alleen maar lekker weer gehad...) Waar we ook aan moeten wennen is: - rokende mensen; in Kenia mag je in het openbaar officieel niet roken... - "slechter" geklede mensen en veel mensen met (leijke) tattoos, iets wat je minder ziet in Kenia (tattoos) en iedereen kleed zich met trots en veel mensen in pak met das dan wel mantelpak of rok. -Wat ook wennen is dat je hier niet naar beneden hoeft te blijven kijken als je loopt, want de straten zijn goed (onderhouden) en er is zelfs een voetpad en vaak een fietspad! -Wat er in Kenia erg veel is, vuilnis op de straat, dat is er hier minder (zwerfvuil) maar wel erg veel hondenpoep... wat ook niet fijn is!                               

Maar al met al is het zeker goed om weer thuis te zijn! We hebben in Kenia ook een goede tijd gehad (los van delen van de procedure en nogal wat stress momenten) en veel fijne mensen en plekken leren kennen!

Maar nu is het zaak de goede herinneringen vast te houden, de slechtere vervagen al, en verder te bouwen aan nieuwe herinneringen als een gezin van 4.

Ik heb zeg maar "een dingetje met nijlpaarden" ....  (en er zijn er een paar tastbare         herinneringen bijgekomen ;-)

De komende weken zal ik proberen de onderwerpen in concept nog uit te werken en te plaatsen.

En we laten natuurlijk weten hoe het de jongens en ons verder vergaat de komende maanden...

Dan na de zomer vakantie zal het wellicht anders worden met de Blog...

Kieran found it a bit cold the first few days.........

Yes, suddenly it was "back to life, back to reality"  ;-)
At least for Matthew and myself, very quickly!
On Monday 27th May Matthew went back to his school, de Wegwijzer, in group 4 with many of his old friends.  He's already had lots of friends round to play and feels pretty much settled in back home again, luckily.  (Saying goodbye to Kenya was hard for him, also getting on the plane he was upset).  But seeing his bike again and unlimited playtime outside makes up for a lot!
We did not have any welcome committee at the airport by choice, we wanted to introduce Kieran to his new home quietly.  But the house had been decoreted with flags, cards and flowers from the family and neighbours, and later we received more flowers and lots of cards, which is lovely.

We brought quite a few things home from Kenya, souvenirs, presents and some things for the boys' rooms

On Monday I went for a meeting to my work, IKEA BV, to hear what they had lined up for me to come back to.  And since Tuesday I work in Customer Relations (Klanten Service), and had a meeting immediately the same day with colleagues.  The day after was spent on the work floor (took a bit of getting used to!) and on Thursday I had a day at head office.  This coming week will be a reasonably normal working week for me again.

I'm very pleased that this was possible and that I still have a job to come back to in a good company where great people work.

Kieran stayed at home a week first to get used to the house and the neighbourhood with Jane, and then from Monday 3rd June he will also go to school in group1, the same school as Matthew, just for mornings till the summer holidays.
It's all a bit overwhelming still for him, but he is getting used to it.  Obviously this is very different to living in Nairobi. For instance he stood at the bottom of the stairs, pointed upstairs and asked, 'what's up there, who lives there?'  Then the same question on the first floor, looking up the staircase to the second floor.  Indeed, we have more room here than our 2-room apartment in Nairobi where if you stood in the middle, you could see everything, which was charming for a while :-)

He already has some favourite things to do in the house: watching TV (Woezel and Pip, Charlie and Lola, and Postman Pat, thanks to the CBeebie channel which we acquired while we were away) and dressing up in all kinds of clothes, trying out different flavours of 'hagelslag' (something to put on bread for breakfast) and now it is getting sunnier, playing outside on the scooter and playing ball in the park under our supervision.
Because we had rented our house out, we had to get a lot of things back out of storage that we had put away for safe keeping, and arrange some minor repairs. Now after a week we are pretty much back to normal and everything is back in it's place.  We also discovered that despite selling, giving away and throwing away a lot of things before we left, that we still have a lot of things, especially toys.  Both boys have their own bedroom which both enjoys, especially Matthew (Kieran quite enjoyed sharing a room but has quickly got used to sleeping alone and now neither disturb the other), with their own things in it.
But we did have to move some things around and replace some furniture to make Matthew's room really 'his' after using it as a spare room.  It was re-painted and how he has his own things in it and most importantly a new bed! (We also have to get used to having 2 boys now and finding the balance of who gets what). But for Kieran, everything here is new even if it is a hand-me-down from Matthew, and Matthew is also very aware that Kieran is new here and gets sometimes more attention now than he does.  Anyway, Matthew has a fresh new room in which he chose most of the furniture and decoration and Kieran has lots of toys that Matthew is now too big for.

Yes,a memory of Kenya in his room ! 

Jane is now the one who has time off and will be working less hours once Kieran goes to school.  So she has time to play with Kieran and Matthew and help them get used to school and each other in this different environment.  And she of course also has time to get the house in irder and do some work in the garden to get it looking tidy again.

Kieran is doing really well, maybe tood good (but we are adoptive parents and looking for problems...) but so far he is very happy and enthusiastic about almost everything. He has been looking forward to going to school and really likes looking at the trains (we live close to the station) and looking at the planes (Schiphol Airport is also close); he squeals every time he sees a train or a plane!  We will have to see how he develops of course, and the realisation that his life has changed drastically for ever probably has to still sink in fully.

The weather is one of the things he will have to get used to, us too actually!  (We left the sun behind and had almost 10 months of lovely weather). 

Other things we will have to get used to are: people smoking - in Kenya you are not offically allowed to smoke in public; badly-dressed people - or rather 'casually' dressed people - in Kenya everyone tries to dress smartly and you see many people in suits or dresses; people showing off their (ugly) tattoos which are not appreciated in Kenya.  It's also a refreshing change not to have to look where you are walking all the time as the streets and pavements are well maintained and there is always a footpath (or cycle path - something else for Kieran to get used to!).  In Kenya there is also lots of rubbish on the streets which you don't see here, though here we have to be on the look out for dog excrement on the streets to avoid it, which you don't get in Kenya.  But all in all, it's good to be home.  We had a good time in Kenya (apart from some stressful times due to the procedure) and got to know some good people and saw some great places!                

So now we have to hold onto the good memories (the bad memories are already fading) and continue building new memories as a family of four.    

I have a thing with hippos (and brought a few reminders home me - these are not all from Kenya) 

In the next few weeks I will try to finalise and post all my draft blog posts.  And of course we will let you know how the boys and ourselves are doing in the coming months. 

Adter the summer I assume the blog will change or stop.  But for now, thank you for reading and for the support, comments and reactions everybody :-)
